SLP Holiday Tourney

Post by CitiesSpudsGuy » Tue Dec 27, 2011 9:14 pm

My apologies if there is already a topic started on this tourney. I didn't see one when I scrolled through the list.

This tourney starts on Wednesday with some top 10 teams in the field. Predictions on who wins the first round games? Who wins the tourney? The first round matchups are:

Elk River
Maple Grove

Jefferson
Wayzata

Eden Prairie
Moorhead

Benilde
Centennial
50+ years of Spuds Hockey

I'll go with Maple Grove, Wayata, Eden Prairie & Benilde in the 1st round.

Maple Grove & Benilde in the semis.

Benilde in the finals.

I'm going The Grove over The Knights...but that EP-BSM game could put a kink into that...I like MG regardless...

Why doesn't St. Louis Park play in the St. Louis Park Tourney?

BSM is a solid team with many good players. They will get Bette as the season goes as well now that their goalie is back. Out of the teams that are left they might be the favorites with MG.

It doesn't matter who their goalie is when you give 11 breakways in 2 games they are sitting ducks back there. It's about teaching team defense which doesn't appear to happen. You can't hang your goalie out to dry with a 5 man forecheck. Undisiplined team, due poor coaching.

Well Timmy, unless you're playing knee hockey, if a team is giving up 11 breakaways in two games, it seems to me that who your goalie is becomes even more important. They'll be fine.

While I enjoyed playing knee hockey, I havn't played in 35 years. Even with their "regular" goalie they still gave up 3 breakaways one of which they scored on. The MG game they 8 in 2 periods and their "other" goalie only gave up 4. My point is they are atrocious on defense, whether transition D or penalty kill (see B'ville) game.

I noticed too that on offense last night all three goals scored in regulation were on the power play. While that helps your power play stats, you expect a team of talented forwards to also score 5 on 5, especially against a team that's ranked 10+ spots lower.

We'll see today if yesterday's game was just an anomaly or if BSM is developing some problems on offense while they attempt to get better on defense.
