HIBBING AT VIRGINIA
Its always a great game with a great atmosphere. What does everyone predict for the score?
Hibbing 7
Virginia 3
Hibbing 7
Virginia 3
While you're right about Hibbing relying heavily on Adam Johnson, you're not really saying much. Whereas Kloos being a one man team is more unusual in AA, in single A, it is not.PuckU126 wrote:Bigcat99 wrote:Adam Johnson 4

Kinda like Justin Kloos = Lakeville South
Other than the Big 3, who have that depth, most other A schools will have one guy carry the load. For example,
Mahtomedi-Tanner Jordan-26% of his team's total points
Duluth Marshall-Judd Peterson-25%
EGF-Lawdermilt-22%
Totino-Roo-21%
Hibbing-Johnson-20%
Denfeld-Talarico-19%
Lourdes-Samuelson-19%
For the majority of Top 20 Class A schools, if you take away their top guy, there isn't a whole lot left.
Been living around here too long, as I've not heard that word used much in recent years.rainier wrote:My bad, I thought your post was meant in a pejorative sense. I get bored and go fishing for arguments sometimes. Slow day at work.Bigcat99 wrote:Rainier,
Thanks for taking the time to pull up the stats that solidified my point!
And me thinks I needs a new job. Anyone openings at your firm?

Virginia does not have a radio station anymore... I believe KRBT AM 1340 from Eveleth is doing the game though... stone ages there too - no web stream.rainier wrote:No Adam Johnson tonight. We'll see if the rest of the squad can pick up their play and win without him.
Does anyone know what Virginia radio station will carry the game and if they have an online stream? WMFG in Hibbing is still in the stone age and does not stream.

Sounds like he will be returning soon. According to DeCenzo, Johnson's back was still a little sore and they weren't going to rush him back. Hopefully he will be playing again by the Denfeld game on Tuesday.RangeHockeyFan1817 wrote:Disappointed to hear Johnson is out but still very excited for the game. Hibbing absolutely dominated the first 7 minutes of the game, scoring twice and outshooting Virginia 12-1. Virginia called its timeout with 8 minutes left in the first period and regrouped. After that, Virginia had the better of it, but dug too big of a hole to climb out of without any real prolific goal scorers. Shots ended up 20-12 in favor of Hibbing in the period.
Virginia's first goal was shorthanded and came from the Hibbing goaltender, who was trying to make a pass from behind his own goal and banked off his own defender into the empty net. No Virginia player was even in the offensive zone.
Hibbing got a powerplay goal late in the 2nd period, a period in which they were outplayed and outshot 13-6, but won on the scoreboard to go ahead 3-1.
Virginia began to dominate and scored 3 times in the first 4 minutes of the 3rd to take a 4-3 lead, then Billy Wherland scored a couple minutes later to tie it and slow down the Virginia momentum.
Wherland then scored again with 3+ to play to give the Jackets the lead and they hung on for dear life from there. Shots in the period were 21-9 in favor of Virginia in the period. Other than the one goal he banked in, Carlson played a very good game for Hibbing in goal. Murray for Virginia was very good early on when Hibbing was peppering him, but the game winner he'd probably like to have back.
Final shots on goal were 46 to 36 in favor of Virginia. (Which means Virginia outshot them 45 to 24 after the timeout in the first period.) Unfortunately for Virginia, you can't erase 7 minutes of the game.
Fun game to watch, and it stayed fairly clean, especially for a rivalry game. Rematch should be good, especially with Johnson back for Hibbing.
Both teams have a long ways to go to get to the level of Duluth Marshall though.

I was very impressed with the way the goaltender from Virginia played last night. For being only a 9th grader the kid was very at ease in the nets, has good fundamentals and squared up and handled his rebounds well. If he works hard I can see him being one of the top goalies in Northern Minnesota in years to come.
This is really a pattern for Hibbing. They come out flying in the first period and when they get up a couple goals, they just sit on their lead. Eventually other teams get right back in it and it's anyone's game from there. This team needs to learn to play hard for 51 minutes, something DeCenzo mentions in the paper after nearly every game.
