Hibbing (13-10) @ Hermantown (24-0) 2-17-12

Post by HShockeywatcher » Wed Feb 15, 2012 12:14 pm

These two teams have concluded their seasons with this match up the last 3 seasons and Hibbing has yet to come out on top. With Hermantown improved from last year and coming into this game with a streak of 3 shut outs in a row, this will be a tough one for Hibbing to play close.

Does Hibbing have a chance at the upset?

With the hawks a game away from unbeaten season I look for them to come out flying. Hawks by four or five.

Somehow, Hibbing always plays Hermantown tough (6-4 (en), 2-2, 5-4 in their last three meetings). And Little Falls playing them close gives me hope. But, I receive my mail in reality, so I guess I better make a prediction based from there.

5-2 Hawks

Agree that they always seem to play each other close with many entertaining games over the years in regular season, section finals and State. Both teams play a similar style and have the old-school coaches so not a big surprise that you can throw the records out when they play. Hibbing fans travel well so should be a good atmosphere as well. Senior night for 11 Hawks and exorcising the vision of Johnson dangling his way through last year’s semifinal will motivate the D-men to find the little extra. Hawks 4-2 (EN).

I look forward to seeing what kind of player Adam Johnson is having not seen him this year except for a glimpse on tv against D. Marshall. Last year he put up 80+ points and was a catalyst offensively, but what I remember is that he was playing with mostly a pretty decent line of upperclassmen. From this website I think I heard he missed some time this year? Will be interesting to see if he has enough support. From what I heard and I didn't see the whole game, but Judd Peterson and company @DMarshall kept Hibbing & Johnson in check. In turn, Hermantown kept Judd Peterson off the scoring sheets. Does Hibbing have enough firepower? This has turned into a pretty intense matchup over the last 5-10 years.

Virginia kept him in check pretty good last night (although he did score two goals - jammed in a rebound and scored on a fluke from center ice), and the supporting cast came up empty. I think that is the key for Hermantown as well, and with their defense, my guess is they will do just that. If they let him loose in the slot or let him carry the puck into the zone unchecked, he will eat them up though.

Still think Hawks win by at least 3. Just too much talent and experience for Hibbing to overcome. If Carlson is on, they can stay close though.

After the Grand Rapids game I thought Hibbing would have a good chance of giving Hermantown their first loss of the season, but then I watched Hibbing lose to Virginia and I changed my mind. Then come to find out that one of their best players Josh Bestul is out for the rest of the season with an injury. With that said I think Hibbing is going to have a tuff time with Hermantown. From what I have seen of Hibbing this year its goaltending has been inconsistent and there doesn't seem to be any leadership comming from the seniors. I base this on what I observed last year. I think Hibbing only had three or four seniors, but they were leaders and took a very young team to State. It looks like it is going to be an up hill battle for Hibbing if they want to get back to State.

Hibbing always gives Hermantown a game. Two years ago virginia put hibbing in running time before this game and it turned out to be a one goal game that was decided in the last minute. Don't go off the previous game. Hibbing's goalie will decide the outcome of this game. They will need to play three soild periods. All year they've struggled doing that.

I agree with this 100%. When Hibbing plays with intensity, they look like a team that could take 7A. When they come out flat, they look very average. The Bestul loss hurts, he really seized his opportunity on the first line and was really clicking-will be tough to replace. Goaltending will have to be solid from here on out if they expect to compete.

Hibbing lost 4-0 to Virginia last season and three days later they tied Hermantown 2-2. They always seem to play Hermantown tough, but I'm hoping they keep it within 3 goals this year.

Anyone know if there is any audio or video streaming anywhere for this game tonight?

hate to say this but... the hawks probably will win this game, but i wouldn't be surprised to see them lose if they come out like they did against cloquet and superior... they are a very good team but have yet to be seriously tested and their goaltending hasnt seen that many shots all year, if its not this game it will be a massive let down when they finally do face a team that has good goaltending and will put more than 20 shots on net... that aren't from dumping the puck in,

3-1 either way if one team takes a crap on the ice and the other's goalie shows up to play

3-0 Hawks. With under a min. to play in the period.
Hibbing changes goalies.

Shots after two periods
30-16 Hermantown

Hermantown pulled away in this period. SHots were pretty much even after the first 9-8 I believe in favor of Hermantown.

Respectable showing by Hibbing vs the undefeated Hawks. Not sure why Hibbing switched goalies, the starter had stopped 27/30 shots before the switch. Whoever is in net is going to have to be rock solid if Hibbing hopes to beat I-Falls and pull off the big upset over Marshall.
