I am going to go out on a limb and predict Silver Bay upsetting Virginia. You just never know?

After seeing how Silver Bay struggled getting past Eveleth-Gilbert (a team they beat 12-1 earlier this year) in overtime tonight, I have to give the nod to Virginia in this one. A 5-2 score should be close to the final if Silver Bay plays well, If not, I think Virginia will blow them away.

Niskanen is playing like no other in the play offs, he was balls off the wall against ely, 2 goals, 3 or 4 assists i believe, with nico 2 goals and some assists. just matt knowing it could be done, watch out. no way will silver bay get by them, sb doesnt have any depth. 7-2 Virginia. Virginia will play Hermantown in the finals would be my prediction. You will see a niskanen like no other. Virginia's chance to shine? Maybe, they beat hermantown during the season and tied with hibbing.

Honestly, unless Niskanen dies, I think Virginia has this in the bag. The thing is, can they finish off Hermantown or Hibbing and finally claim the 7A throne and make state? We'll see.

Niskanen was a man among boys tonight, and I'm sure he'll log plenty of minutes Saturday and in the finals too assuming the Blue Devils get past Silver Bay. I had a chance to coach him in a baseball all-star game last summer, and he seems like a nice kid, too. It's easy to root for someone like that.

But I have a sneaking suspicion that whoever wins the Hibbing/Hermantown tilt will take the section. I think both teams have a slight, and I do mean slight, edge over Virginia.

From an Ely standpoint, it would be fun to see two former Timberwolves goaltenders squaring off in the finals.

i like your positive thinking bucksony, in hopes that your bluejackets, if they can get past hermantown (which i think they will), will get to play silver bay, but i dont think thats a possibility. this virginia team has come too far this season to let it all slip away at this point. i haven't seen silver bay play this year yet so im not sure how they are as a team as far as depth is concerned, but i know how weak their strength of schedule was and i dont think they will be ready for the pressure of this game. look for virginia to come out flyin on that big sheet of ice and pick away the mariners pretty easily. good luck to both teams.

GO DEVILS!!

Some perspective on Silver Bay's schedule strength:

13 of their 19 wins came against teams seeded 7th or lower in their respective sections. 4 more of thier wins and a tie came against 5th and 6th seeded teams. Their other two wins were against weaker Wisconsin teams (one of which hasn't won a game this year). The only teams they defeated that finished the season with a winning record were Eveleth-Gilbert (twice after the 7-6 OT win), and Hayward, Wisconsin. Nothing in the win column here impresses me at all.

They lost every game they played against a top-4 seeded team. (0-2 vs #1's, 0-2 vs #2's, 0-1 vs #3's, didn't play a #4) Their other loss came to Wisconsin's top rated team, Superior, in a 5-0 shutout. The scores of 3 of these games indicate they may be able to compete with the best at times, but also seems to say they can't beat the better teams.

I realize Virginia's schedule wasn't all that strong either, but it was no where near this -- and Virginia won or tied all of their games against the "better" teams. It's nearly impossible for me to give Silver Bay a realistic chance at pulling off the upset. They may make a game of it, but they would need to play their best game of the year and have Virginia come out flat to advance to the finals. If the reverse happens and Virginia comes out flying and Silver Bay is flat, this one will end with running time.

SB EG

Post by GB12 » Fri Feb 18, 2005 7:25 am

I watched the game last night and it was controlled by EG. They got beat because of soft goals let in by their goaltender. He made some very good saves but couldn't make the ruotine ones.

The earlier match-up between these teams was a fluke as was the EG Virginia game. Neither one of those teams was 10 or more goals better than EG. That was seen in the other games that were played this year between the teams. Last night should have been a 6-1 Eveleth win. The rest of the goals for SB were weak.

I would watch out for SB's first line on a big sheet of ice. They can do some damage.

i heard eveleth played a good game last night, and i expected that from them. they were a better team than what they played like all year, too bad it didn't come out till last night. and no, silver bay isn't anywhere near 10 goals better than anyone, and virginia is probably only 9 goals better than eveleth so ill give ya that one too <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin"> but silver bay has no real chance saturday, lets just hope they keep it respectable and make a game of it. with all that open ice, ill be surprised if nisky and nico dont turn in 4 points a piece, uit'll be fun to watch those two work with some open ice on that big sheet over there.

GO DEVILS!!

yeah, silver bay smoked eveleth in the reg season, like 10-1, i forgot what the score was, but virginia played awesome against eveleth in the 11-1 game. lately virginia has come out sharp, compared to last years lazy start team, then pick it up. Yes, niskanen will log minutes, but he has logged them all season long so he can do longer shifts for the playoffs. i see him and nico getting most of the goals here on out. Finals will be a toss up who wins. SB should get beat handily, since they have been playing poorly as of late. Im ready for the finals, Niskanen will be absolutely balls out, should be some real nice hits and real nice goals.

Virginia/Silver Bay

There is no way Virginia will lose to Silver Bay Saturday, that's all there is to it, unless something drastic happened of course. This season they seem to have a much better mentality and team chemistry, they have a really good thing going on right now and I don't see it stopping.
