Score was --

Centennial 3

Moorhead 5

VandeVelde and Loos with 2 goals each. Clukey had the other. I'm sure someone who was at the game will have more details.

Very good battle, but Moorhead was clearly better and deeper than Centennial. However, with the way the Spuds like to handicap themselves with stupid penalties (Lee had three tonight, with the Cougars scoring on two of those power plays), Centennial could have easily won this game. But, Centennial started to take some stupid penalties as well so they ended up on the short end of the game. Moorhead was able to bust through the neutral zone that Centennial likes to plug up, and I think that was the difference in the game. Great high school hockey game and I wouldn't be surprised if these two great programs meet again in St. Paul.

I was at the game, and to answer your question warroad I thought Warroad played Moorhead better. But you know the only way to really answer that question is to play them.....
Moorhead gave up a soft goal in the first minute of the game. Then they took two penalties in the first period alone and spent that time killing them off. Moorhead had a definite advantage in scoring chances all the way through the game they just weren't able to put a stick on the puck. I have seen Centennial and WBL play twice this year against Moorhead and I betting that Centennial comes out of 3AA to defend their state championship. To answer who started in Goal for Moorhead it was Hittle....it was his turn to start in net.
Thats Mr. Potatohead to You!
Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... tohead9 at: 1/29/05 10:53 pm

Slapshooter, you forgot Jake Krause's open net in the beginning of the game that would have tied it. I was quite a dominating performance by Moorhead! Who only kept the score close by taking so many penalties. Next up baby blue Jefferson!

I thought Ammerman had a terriffic game. He played well defensively and set up many great scoring opportunities. D1 schools are missing out if they don't grab this guy. Vande looked great. Becker and Christian played well together too. Spuds are on a roll......

Did Centennial have some kids on the JV team out or do they only have 2 JV lines? I was surprised to see a top AA team with so few kids.

The score definately did not show the dominance of moorhead in this game, the shots were pretty much equal, but Moorhead had many more quality scoring chances. 2 of the times that Lee was put in the box, they should not have called penaltys. Both times it was "2 minutes for checking" just because he's a lot bigger and a lot stronger than the other players he gets penaltys called on him for CHECKING. (he reminds me of nolan oliver from last year, this happened to oliver all the time, for example, he got a 5 minutes major called on him in the state championship game for CHECKING, not boarding, not checking from behind, but CHECKING....just because the centennial kid got hurt).......but anyway, someone said Krause missed an open net....that was fisher. if krause missed one too, i did not see it.

If I remember correctly it was Vande who got the major and it was because the guy was bleeding, it was the correct call. However I do agree with you Nolan would take a lot of penalties because of his size and aggressiveness. Lee on the other hand I don't think is a victim of this. I'm not sure why he gets so many penalties. The paper today said he had 14 minutes, thats almost a whole period. I would agree at least half the penalties he takes are bogus, but for what reason I have no idea. Maybe the refs are always just watching him. Who knows but he shouldn't be missing a whole period. Also where did krause come from, wow was I amazed at his play last night. That kid had some great moves and drew a few penalties one of the best players last night.

5 minute major?

Post by imagenous » Sun Jan 30, 2005 5:23 pm

I'm was almost positive it was oliver who took that penalty, but now that you mention vandy that kinda rings a bell...but im still leaning towards oliver...does anybody KNOW who took that major last year in the state championship? But i do think Lee is a victim of this..and he definately did not have 14 penalty minutes last night....he was in the box 3 times. (unless for some very odd reason they gave him a 10 minute major w/ 30 seconds left in the game) but that was one of the penaltys that i thought was bogus so that's unlikely....the paper was probably wrong.

Wow, you can clearly see who the best conditioned team in the state is, Moorhead, Centennial was barely able to stand up after the game, Moorhead could still take that talent to another notch, they can go on forever, it's great, it doesnt matter what team, they always wear out anyone they play. Centennial was no match in the third period at all.

Only test left is Jefferson(ya right) they'll go the rest of the season and playoffs undefeated.

It's gonna be great seeing the first Moorhead state title banner at the sports center.

thanks jloos, for some reason i was always thinking it was oliver who took that penalty....and mhddomination...i would definately agree with you that they wear down everyone of their oppenents, but i think thats because they make the other team skate A LOT to get puck while they just pass it around. I wouldn't say they are the best conditioned team in the state (although they may be) but i think the best conditioned teams are the ones who only play 2 lines ex. St. Cloud Apollo, but Moorhead plays 3 lines all the time (sometimes 4) so they don't get tired as quick

Lee and Penalties

Post by Potatohead9 » Sun Jan 30, 2005 9:34 pm

Why Lee gets called for so many questionable calls, can be answered by the Ref of the Centennial/Moorhead game that called them all. Notice that only one linesman called most of the penalties? I wont give out his name, he is from moorhead and has kids in the youth program. I heard that his reason for calling penalties on Lee is that since he has come back from the US Junior tourney and wearing the Mr. Hockey candidate his play is being held to a higher standard. Lee might be big and strong and very talented he is not the biggest or strongest on the ice, otherwise you would never see him get knocked down. Its unfair. But Lee needs to recognize this and adapt his play, because its evident that the current situation isn't going to change. Im just curious if the Refs are taking it upon themselves to install the new standards on Lee or if this is coming from somewhere higher perhaps the MSHSL?

i personally think that is a really lame excuse to call penaltys. COME ON GUYS!! this is HOCKEY, it's called "PHYSICAL PLAY!!"........Patatohead9...you should start a new topic on what you just said, i bet there will be some good controversy that starts up.

Imagenous, I know that Wayzata has a player that is big and strong his last name starts with (L) I cant remember it right now and is a very gifted Football player on the championship team. I wonder if anyone from Wayzata could tell us if he is also being called for what appears to be questionable calls or if this is just a Moorhead thing?
Thats Mr. Potatohead to You!
