Hollywood Plays It Up Again

Post by CanAm28 » Mon Feb 21, 2005 1:33 pm

I watched ESPN's replay of the '80 Olympic game versus USSR. I also watched Disney's "Miracle" that was released last year, as I'm sure many of you did. I'm also old enough to remember the game live. What caught me by surprise in last night's re-broadcast on ESPN, with 5:36 left in the third, I kept track of quality scoring chances by USSR. My count was 1! The Hollywood version has Jim Craig standing on his head in the final minutes of the game. I did not realize how good USA played defensively in the final minutes of the game. Billy Baker, Mike Ramsey, and Ken Morrow were outstanding. The USSR was called for icing like three times. Very uncharacteristic of a "puck control" style.
Still the greatest sporting miracle that I've ever seen

It's funny how hollywood can dramatize some things. My only exposure to the game itself was from the movie (I was 2 in 1980). I thought that the U.S. played phenomenal defense in that third period. For all the hype about the Russians, I was a bit disappointed in how they played. I also didn't know that the Russians were behind the Canadians with 5 mins left in the third and behind against Finland going into the third. Not quite the dominant force they were made out to be??

USSR had been dominant for 15 years, the russian dynasty was one thing that hollywood did not over emphasize. They were machines, hockey was their job.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... Abreeze at: 2/21/05 2:03 pm

That is true, they had been dominant. For a long time, no one could beat them.

But I remember whispers before the Games started that this (1980) could be the year that they might get knocked off. Some thought the Czechs might do it. (USA beat them like 7-3)

The Russians were still considered the best team by every one but not as invincible as in the past. Holywood didnt mention that.

Even so, it was a big upset.

Miracle

Post by RinkRat10506 » Tue Feb 22, 2005 4:04 pm

I was born a couple months after this game was played so I've never actually seen the real game. I have watched the movie Miracle and thought it was one of the better movies made in a long time. The on ice shots during the games were done very very well I though and it made you feel like your were playing or watching the game there.

i have the movie and i was watching the extras once. it was really neat, the goals would be almost exact replicas of the ones in real life. it was neat to see.

Miracle was a good movie but I would have to say the documentry.....I can't remember the name but I think it might be something like "Do you Believe in Miracles?".....is way better in my opinion it's the same video they show up at the Hockey Hall of Fame. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... smokin.gif ALT=":smokin">

9/10 myself, got the leading scorer question wrong. I thought it was Buzzy. This game is great. the first time i've ever seen the actual game. Seen highlights of it through different tribute shows, movies, etc. Everytime i hear Al Michaels legendary call of " DO YOU BELIVE IN MIRACLES?" i get a chill down my spine. GOTTA LOVE GREAT HOCKEY!!!!
