right up until the 2002 playoffs centennial was nothing.
hill beat them 3-0 in the semis after beating tartan 8-1 and before beating white bear 4-1. The next year centennial was in the final, last year they were, and they will be this year too. HS team may not have been great but i have heard their youth teams won several titles before they got to high school and thats why they got so good all of a sudden/

Good explanation HillHockey. Centennial does have a strong youth program. That being said, one main problem they do have is that they develope solid players and then they leave the school for another program. Of coarse players leave programs for various reasons. Add Ryan Flynn, Mich Development Team, and B. Schack, Totino Grace leading scorer to this team and no team currently out there would touch Centennial.

Good point Hill, and not only do they have a great youth program, they have a great coaching system so this youth talent doesn't become strained and filtered out over the years.

Some talented skaters may leave, but I've seen many teams suffer at the Varsity level but excel at youth levels, it's all about managing your talent. Centennial does a great job of that.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... Abreeze at: 2/22/05 10:17 pm

Yeah and as we all know some youth programs are outstanding but then once varsity hits..something is lost and its good to see its paying off for someone.
One former centennial student i talked to about the hockey team went something like this "It's good to see them finally win something." I agree.

Centennial's youth program has been growing proportionately with population. They have produced a lot of good players that transfered. Billy Hengen was probably the best of the bunch. When Youth programs win, they generally stick together. Good coaching, commited parents and kids, and most importantly NUMBERS. Thats the formula for consistent success, which keeps kids home.

The area that Centennial serves has grown immensely over the past 10 years. In the early 90s the school had about 1000 kids, now they're over 2000. Obviously this helps the athletic program. This is not to suggest that numbers alone have created a top-notch hockey program. The youth system is well supported and very strong and Coach Aus, although struggling through a lot of years when he had some great talent, (Brad Timmons, Joel Peterson, Brady Lundblad, Aaron McClellan et. al.) but little depth, really deserves some credit for making the program work from the ground up. He's paid his dues. In my opinion, it's great to see a new face enter Mn hockey elite. I think they'll be tough for years to come. The only problem is that 3AA is loaded (other sections are as well) with WBL, Hill, Roseville.

Centennial has been building its program over the past ten years and yes population has had alot to do with their success.

The have lost very few players over the years, you could count on one hand.

Josh Singer AHA
Charlie Doth St. Cloud Tech
Brian Shack Grace
Ryan Flynn National Development Team
David Klammer WBL
Joel Billstrom Moundsview

The most important fact is that their have been no transfers into the program.

The tradition has started in Centennial and should continue for years to come from what I see. The youth programs in District 10 captured 6 District championships last weekend in their district tournaments.

A Bantams
B1 Bantams
A Peewee's
B2 Peewees
A Squirts
U14A Girls

Thats where the success is started.

Hammer

Maybe 2 hands. Add Hengen/AHA, Ryan Stutz/WBL, and Phil Todd/Jrs.

They actually lost Billy Hengen to AHA as well. Now he is one of the top scorers for SCSU. The two Ratfields, Searles, Bullar, and Bohman also helped bring Totino to state in the mid 90's.

They have one of the top if not the top youth programs in the state so they will be very good for years to come.

I know that the A squirt coaches have coached in Centennial for 10 plus years and usally they coach more then one team. I remember when they coached the A Bantams in WBL before they moved to Centennial. Not sure about the Peewee coach, and the Gorowsky's just have kids in the Centennial program.
