2021-22 Section Realignment

Post by Eagles93 » Fri Apr 16, 2021 10:42 am

Changes to AA Sections for the upcoming season:

Lakeville North 3AA --> 1AA
Mound Westonka 2A --> 2AA
Cretin Derham Hall 6AA --> 3AA
Mahtomedi 4A --> 4AA
North St Paul 4A --> 4AA
Gentry Academy 5A --> 4AA
Irondale/St Anthony 4AA --> 5AA
Mounds View 4AA --> 5AA
Osseo/Park Center 6AA --> 5AA
North Wright Co. 7AA --> 5AA
Armstrong/Cooper 5A --> 6AA
Holy Angels 5A --> 6AA
Anoka/SLP 5AA --> 7AA
Blaine 5AA --> 7AA

North back where they belong.
Mound Westonka up I assume due to enrollment numbers.
CDH to 3AA makes sense, and out of the 6AA gauntlet for them.
Poor Armstrong/Cooper. Destined for 1st round matchup with Edina.
Holy Angels must have opted up? Why? Into 6AA, ouch.
Glad they fixed 5AA with only 6 teams in it the last couple years.

Two biggest "winners" in AA, at least in the short term, have got to be Cretin and NWC.

This is fun. As of 4/16, without confirmation of who is transferring where (hello Breck), I'm going on the record with my AA Section finals predictions for February 2022. I reserve the right to change these in October after the summer chaos has concluded:

1AA - Lakeville North v. Lakeville South
2AA - Minnetonka v. Holy Family
3AA - CDH v. Eastview
4AA - Hill-Murray v. Stillwater
5AA - Maple Grove v. NWC
6AA - Edina v. Benilde
7AA - Andover v. Blaine
8AA - Alexandria v. Roseau

Single A looks like a clear Chisago v. Warroad v. Proctor/Hermantown battle. With Breck continuing the attrition, I couldn't even name a 4th team to watch.

Anyone with "6AA -->" or "7AA -->" next to their name is a clear winner. :lol:

I haven't looked too closely yet at who is losing a lot of seniors but at quick look, I can't disagree with your predictions. And I don't expect much change (again) for the final 8 that we see at the X next year. I expect to see Edina, Andover, Tonka again in the final 4, and maybe Hill as the 4th.

I would have to question NWC getting to the section final in 5AA. Of the new teams moving in, I would think Roseville and MV have a better shot. Both are not graduating many seniors and were strong teams this past year. NWC looks like they had trouble scoring goals (and had a poor record). Only 4 games where they scored more than 2 goals. I get it though, they played in the Lake. Tough conference. But they got they got kicked by NWSC Elk River in the section quarters. Lets not forget the section champions Centennial. They only graduated 6, lose one on D, and return many of their top players and goalie. Similarly with Rogers, though they are graduating 8, their top players and goalies are returning. No need to mention MG... they're always strong and can reload.

Agreed, even though Blaine leaves, I think 5AA got tougher with the addition of Mounds View and NWC. I think 5AA might be the 2nd toughest section next year. I'd probably rank them:

6AA
5AA
4AA
3AA
7AA
2AA
8AA
1AA

Mound Westonka 2A --> 2AA
Holy Angels 5A --> 6AA

Revisiting this thread, wonder how/why these two ended up back in class A after initially being placed in AA? Maybe Holy Angels wanted to opt up, then changed their mind when saw they were in 6AA? Holy Angels boys are in AA.

Im not 100% sure on the mechanics, but I believe even after the MSHSL releases their initial section alignments, schools can petition to opt down a class. My guess is thats what happened here
