By record Hastings should be the top ranked team in section 3. At the very least they should be #2.

Thank you for that observation..I will note them with an "*" should I repost this in a couple weeks as "teams that should be ranked higher". :-k

Hastings

Three simple words... Ease of schedule. They have only played one AA ranked team. That being a very good Hill Murray team. The other A ranked team they played was SSP, and they lost that as well. Could they get through sections, yes. But again a very weak section could make that possible. As far as rankings go... They have a decent record. But in order to get respect from the hockey gods their coaching staff has to set a better schedule for them next year to be judged by.

Section #1
Lakeville South
They finally get over the hump if their goalie plays well.

Section #2
Eden Prairie
3 reasons...they have LuckyEPDad, they get to bring the Refs, & Edina's coaching staff!

Section #3
East Ridge
Deeper than the rest, well coached

Section #4
Hill Murray
Cretin skates about 8 kids & will run out of gas; as they did last year in the 3rd.

Section #5
Centennial
The Red Army will conquer!

Section #6
Minnetonka
EJ coaches to win all season long. Girls get it! Forwards & PP are too strong for anyone else in Section.

Section #7
Elk River
Solid group that will tear your head off to win.

Section #8
Roseau
Solid team that will out work & out coach that talented Buffalo team.

Section 1 is intriguing with 4 teams ranked 9-16. Section 2, Edina vs. Eden Prairie as always. Section 3 - five other sections where the lowest-ranked team (of top 4) is about the same or higher-ranked than the highest ranked team here. Section 4 - does CDH have a legitimate chance? Section 5 - three moderately ranked teams. Section 6 - strongest in state by far for the umpteenth year in a row. The surviving team will need to beat not just one, but two, top teams. Section 7 - one of the second tier could give ER a run. Section 8 - Roseau slipping a bit, Buffalo could pull it out.

Note I'll post a tournament winner picking challenge after sections have been announced. Then, of course, the state tournaments.

Chin scratching, really? Your present the top ranked teams from each section and ask who will win. Your source is suspect at the best of times, but when it leaves out the team with the best record in the section it is laughable. Don't give me the strength of schedule argument either. KRATCH has them ranked highest in the section and that is partially based on strength of schedule.

Why not list all teams in each section without rankings. If your readers don't know enough to have an opinion why should they express one?

Everytime I see this written out, it reminds me how bad the system is.

We never get the 8 best teams, and I hate that.

But I'll take

Lakeville S
Eden Prairie
Eastview
Hill-Murray
Mounds View
Tonka
Elk River
Roseau

EP has the largest PP-PK deficit in the Lake conference, second largest in Section 6 and they are winning because they have the refs in their pocket? Yeah, sure.

Your point made me think, so I checked the boys side. In theory, if the tops seeds made it out of their sections on the boys side, state would look like this:

Lakeville N... Ranked #1
Edina...Ranked #2
Hill Murray...Ranked #3
Elk River...Ranked #5
Benilde...Ranked #7
Bemidji...Ranked #9
White Bear...Ranked #10
Blaine...Ranked #13

Only one team not in top 10 and Blaine at #13 is always a late season powerhouse.

Eden Prairie #1 duh
Edina #7

Bloomington Jefferson #25

Section #3
Eagan #24
East Ridge #44
Eastview #51
Burnsville #59 goaltending and coaching. Either Bville or Hastings

Section #4

CDH #6 goaltending again, unless HM plays their "backup" in sections they won't make it back to defend the title
Stillwater #20
Roseville #21

Section #5
Centennial #14
Mounds View #17 Toss up. Sid Brodt needs to carry this team to state
Blaine #18
Champlin Park #29

Minnetonka #3 another toss up
Wayzata #5
Hopkins #15

Section #7
Elk River #13

Did the Class A State Tournament get cancelled, or is the Championship game the section 5A final?

#1 - Lakeville South - Inside source tells me "this is their year"

#2 - Eden Prairie - Loaded and deep. Could take the title!!

#3 - Eagan - Benefit of a weak section.

#4 - Cretin - Upsets the King of the Hill Murray. Cretin may suprise some teams.

#5 - Mounds View - Upset the Cougars in the section finals. Been there before. Experience matters.

#6 - Maple Grove - Ouch!!! Good and outstanding coaching!! Too bad he will be in Duluth next year with his wife.

#7 - Grand Rapids in an upset!! Young and talented. If they get ANY goaltending they may suprise

#8 - Roseau - Yawn!

Subject to change, but right now I'll say:
1 - Dodge County
2 - Eden Prairie
3 - Eagan
4 - Hill-Murray
5 - Mounds View
6 - Minnetonka
7 - Elk River/Zimmerman
8 - Roseau

Apparently the goaltending was quite good enough when they lost to Elk River earlier this season 4-1.
ER goalies:
1.84 GA .917 SV %
1.45 GA .916 SV %
FL goalies:
2.13 GA .909 SV%
2.14 GA .894 SV%

Also, tougher schedule and conference for Elk River. 8)

It could be that the top two teams in State are both A. I would take Blake and TRF over any challengers, although Tonka would give them a good game. MG and EP are not worship worthy...

Who has TRF played down here and how did they stack up?
And I agree Blake could win anywhere on any given day. Bullock is one of the best in the state again this year.

Here are a few observations from a homer. Tonka already beat TRF 4-0 this year and the game wasn't close on the ice or the scoreboard.

Also, Blake has went on to roll through state the last two years like butter in class A. Both those years Tonka played Blake the last game of the season and beat them 7-1 and 4-2.

They are good! But to think they would make it through Sections 6 and Win AA state is a bit of a reach.

I've only seen TRF play once this year, so my observations could be based on an off game (they played EP to a tie). They have a good goaltender, but with her propensity to kick the goal from its moorings I don't think she has a lot of faith in her defense. The offense is opportunistic, but didn't do a good job establishing the zone and maintaining pressure. Much of the game it looked like EP was on a power play.

I take pictures at games and I think the TRF fans thought I was with a paper or blog. They kept asking if I got pictures of a goal or a blocked shot because "This is a historic event!" If you are a top team beating or tying EP should not be considered a historic event. They have yet to beat a top 10 team though they have ties against EP and Roseau. They may not even win their conference which is all class A sized schools. I don't think TRF would make it through section 6. They would give Roseau some much needed competition in section 8. They could play class 2A and be very competitive, but they would not breeze through the state tournament.

I don't necessarily agree EP, but considering the deep rooted parochialism in the SW burbs, your opinion isn't surprising to me. Curious, what happened to Padgett this year? The screaming Eagles split goalie time last year and did pretty well. This year they seem to be sticking with one. Breck, MG have done well splitting time with theirs. If I remember correctly, she transferred from MG? She's a good goaltender...we have seen her play many times throughout the years as my daughter plays in the nets and is a '98. Us goalie parents try to keep tabs on each other ya know...we are a special bunch. :D
