> Overall, as compared to Weeks 1 & 2, Week 3 appears to have the most "disagreements" (coin flips) as to who will prevail in this week's slate of featured games. This should produce the most interesting, wide-ranging weekly contest result of the season, so far. Which means a great opportunity for newbies to give it a shot.

> So far, no love for Centennial in their Northwest Suburban battle with Blaine on Tuesday? This seems to present a great opportunity for some prognosticator to get a leg up on the rest of the field...

> Blake over Edina on Friday? So far, 3 of 5 think so. Hmm...

Centennial 3, Blaine 1
Allison Pitlick’s goal and assist led the Centennial Cougars to a 3-1 upset win over the Blaine Bengals. The Bengals outshot the Cougars by a 38-31 margin, but could only manage to get one past senior netminder Mackenna Stoterau (.974 SV%!).

Six of seven prognosticators had Blaine prevailing in this one. Any guesses as to who picked Centennial?

Edina 4, Wayzata 3 (OT)
Edina’s Katie Davis scored with just over a minute to go in the overtime period to edge Wayzata in a battle between two Top 10 teams at the Plymouth Ice Center. The two teams had traded goals in each of the three periods of regulation; every time Edina scored Wayzata would find a way to get the equalizer, until running out of time after Davis’s late game heroics. Davis also had a power play goal in the second which put the Hornets up 2-1. Shots on goal strongly favored Edina 38-25, including an overwhelming 19-2 margin in the second period.

In the second game of our weekly contest 4 of 7 picked the Hornets to win, but for both games nobody was able to get both games right (I had a feeling this week would be interesting!). So after the first two of Week 3’s eleven games we have a five-way tie for 1st, with one point each…which is to say I’ve still got a chance.

I am a BIG fan of Stoterau...glad she helped her team get a big win. Rooting for that girl...

Trojan over Edina was a gamble but a good one in my mind. I am surprised that there were 2 others who picked them to win.

Feeling even more unsure about my Blake pick over Edina after a one goal win (Blake had an EN goal) over Farmington.

Congrats to FLAKE for being first team to 20 wins.

Eden Prairie 4, North Wright County 2
Grace Kuipers, just a sophomore who has committed to play her college hockey at Princeton, scored a goal in each period. Her hat trick was all the Eagles needed in their 4-2 non-conference win over North Wright County. For the game Eden Prairie outshot the RiverHawks in each period, finishing with a 35-20 margin.

Mound Westonka 3, Holy Family 2
Grace Peterson’s two goals paced Mound Westonka to a 3-2 win over Holy Family Catholic in a battle between the two top teams in the Wright County Conference. The game was tied at two late in the 3rd period when Mound Westonka’s Sydney Hules scored on the power play. The Fire had a great chance to tie it up in the last minute when the White Hawks committed two penalties at the 16:02 mark, but were unable to capitalize. With the win Mound Westonka, the State’s 3rd ranked team in Class A. remained undefeated and improved their record to 17-0-3.

Lakeville North 3, Lakeville South 2 (Rivalry Game)
This week’s ‘Rivalry Game’ proved to be a close affair in the “Battle of the Lakevilles” at Hasse Arena. After the two teams traded goals North’s Brooke Power got what proved to be the game winner, putting the Panthers ahead 3-2 at the 8:20 make of the middle stanza. From there the game remained scoreless, and the game ended at 3-2. Shots on goal were very even, with South holding a slight edge at 29-27. Panthers’ Cougars’ goaltender Kallie Schneider had a nice game in goal, stopping 27 of the Cougars’ 29 shots.

Shakopee 2, Burnsville 1
Two late 3rd period goals, the first by Paige McNeil on the power play and the game winner by Erika Girard - assisted by McNeil - enabled the Sabres to come from behind and edge the Blaze 2-1. From the box score it appeared that this game was one of momentum shifts, as the shots on goal were 15-9 Shakopee, 15-4 Burnsville and 11-3 Shakopee in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd periods respectively. Credit for the Sabres’ win also goes to their goalie, Sidney Hearn, who stopped all but one of Burnsville's 27 shots on goal.

In our friendly competition Thursday night was all “Mr. KRACH”, the only contestant to get all four games right. I guess this means that all the favorites won tonight(?). In Weeks 1 & 2 Mr. KRACH was off his game a little, but tonight he “found his game”, and should be tough to top in this week’s contest. Three others – Lake South Alum, pucker88 and massalsa, also did well this evening with 3 points each.

For the week to date Mr. KRACH leads the pack with 5 points, closely followed by pucker88 and massalsa with 4 each.

Brainerd/Little Falls 3, Roseau 0
The Flying Warriors, led by junior Gabbie Smith’s goal and assist, and goaltender Breya Sawher’s 14 save shutout, skated to a 3-0 win over the Roseau Rams in a key game with Section 8AA seeding implications. Brainerd/Little Falls remains undefeated in the section at 9-0, and 17-2-1 overall, while Roseau fell to 5-1 in 8AA and 16-4-0 in the season to date.

Andover 6, Grand Rapids 2
Game stats not yet available, but the Huskies’ victory keeps them within striking distance of section leader and No. 3 overall ranked Forest Lake.

Benilde-St. Margaret’s 3, Holy Family 0
It was a tie game after two periods of play before the Red Knights netted three in the 3rd to win going away 3-0. BSM, which has shown steady improvement all the way throughout the season after a slow start, was led by Grace Juckniess who scored BSM’s first and third goals, the last one coming on an empty net. Rose Beeman stopped all 20 of the Fire’s 20 shots for the shutout, while Holy Family’s Alex Pellicci only gave up two of the Red Knights’ 35 shots.

Blake 2, Edina 1
It was the Blake Bears who emerged victorious in a tight, defensive battle featuring the top two ranked teams in the State in Class AA. The Bears’ 2-1 win avenged a 3-4 defeat at the hands of the Hornets back on November 13th. In this one the two teams were tied with a goal apiece after one, until Blake’s Adelaide Burton found the net 2:35 into the second, and Burton’s goal proved to be the game winner. Shots on goal for the game were relatively even, with Edina holding a 21-18 edge.

Two of our contestants, namely Lake South Alum and massalsa, managed to pick the winners in all four of tonight’s games – great going!

The top of the standings going into Saturday night’s lone final game of the week look like this:

Upset Alert!!!

Eden Prairie 3, Wayzata 2
No. 8AA ranked Eden Prairie senior Macy Townsend scored the game winning goal at 2:20 into overtime to upset the No. 4AA ranked Wayzata Trojans 3-2 in a Lake Conference matchup at the Eden Prairie Community Center. Sydney Langseth, a junior and Minnesota State Mankato recruit, had a goal and an assist for the Eagles.

EP’s upset win had no impact on our Week 3 standings, as all seven prognosticators failed to see this one coming. Point totals as shown above remain the same.
