Rochester Lourdes 6, East Grand Forks 4
Clara Billings’ scored twice and assisted on two others to lead the visiting Eagles over the host Green Wave. Emma Schmitz also scored twice, with both coming in the third period, and the last with just one second left, to seal the victory. Aleah Hangsleben had two goals for the Green Wave, who narrowly outshot Lourdes 23-21.
Our nine contestants were pretty evenly split in this one, with a 5-4 majority favoring East Grand Forks. Coming into the game, Let’s Play Hockey rankings had Lourdes at No. 8 in Class A, with the Green Wave right behind them at No. 9. As it turned out, the ratings were very accurate.
Blake 7, Breck 3 (Rivalry Game!)
The No. 1AA ranked Blake Bears skated past the No. 2A Breck Mustangs in this week’s 'Rivalry Game'. Gopher recruit defender Madeline Wethington led the way for the Bears with two even strength, unassisted goals, and Cornell commit Lily Delianedis had a goal and an assist for what’s proven to be a very strong Blake team, new to Class AA but who are now 18-1 since their second game of the season.
Blake’s win was no surprise to our esteemed group, all of whom had them beating Breck in this week's Rivalry Game.
Eden Prairie 4, Brainerd/Little Falls 2
Minnesota State recruit Sydney Langseth, with a goal and two assists, led the way for the visiting Eagles in an interesting South-North showdown between No. 6AA Eden Prairie and No. 5AA Brainerd/Little Falls. An interesting dynamic played out, as the Eagles scored twice in the first period to take a 2-0 lead, with the Flying Warriors tying it up at 2-2 with the only two goals of the second. But it was EP’s Claire Kuipers who found the net for the winning goal in the third, in a very closely contested game between two very evenly ranked and highly skilled teams.
This was a major upset, at least in the eyes of our group, who favored the Flying Warriors – at home - by a 6-3 margin. But it was not meant to be, and so heading into our final five games tomorrow, our Leaderboard looks like this:
1. massalsa – 5 (the only one to get all three games tonight correct – great job massalsa!)
2. Lake South Alum – 4
LZ94 – 4
Pucker88 – 4
5. Three tied at 3
9. One at 2
Until our big finale tomorrow, with 5 games on tap!
