The reschedules will make some of these games even more interesting. I am guessing that the Lake (minus Edina with 2 games remaining) and Blake will have games potentially 3/4 possible days (Trojan with 4 games in 5 days!!!) to end the regular season. Friday/Saturday/Monday/Tuesday will be good training for the Thursday/Friday/Saturday grind of the state tourney if any of those teams are fortunate enough to make it there.

Tuesday, 1/29/19
Blake vs. Forest Lake (BLAKE over flake...if flake is within 2 after the first they will have a chance...SoS is  this season)
Eden Prairie vs. Edina (EP have been a pest in the past to the Hornet...the past is the past...Hornet by 2+)
Wayzata vs. Minnetonka (Od vs oD with a push on goalies = Trojan by a goal)

Thursday, 1/31/19
Farmington vs. Eagan (Just enough WILD in the cats to beat Tigers)

Friday, 2/1/19
Breck vs. Maple Grove (Mustang Mobley the difference)
Andover vs. Blake (Blake wins round 2 by a goal...will there be a round 3?)

Saturday, 2/2/19
Cloquet-Esko-Carlton vs. Thief River Falls (mini ralph just big enough...)
Benilde-St. Margaret's vs. Hill-Murray (I believe that Vadnais Heights is closer to Vatican City than St Louis Park. East side Catholics by 2)
Lakeville North vs. Eagan (coin flip...Eagan loses one of these this week...cant decide which one so I pick them to win both)
Minnetonka vs. Eden Prairie (I think Tonka wins the section but EP gets the #1 seed with this win)

Monday, 2/4/19
Warroad vs. Roseau (Rivalry Game!) (undefeated til the state championship!!!)

Tuesday, 2/5/19
Breck vs. Eden Prairie (stangs a little better than eagles)
Wayzata vs. Maple Grove (Battle of Bass Lake Road goes to the NORTH after 3 games in the prior 4 days for Wayzata!)

As of 10:30pm this Tuesday evening the Hub is showing this game being played on Monday February 4th, but it's still not showing a start time, just "postponed". I'm sure this will be updated to show a true start time on Monday, so let's assume it's a go on the 4th, at 3:15pm.

The EP/Edina game is now scheduled to be a go, on Thursday, January 31st at 5:00pm, and
the Wayzata/Minnetonka game is scheduled to be played on Friday, February 1st, also at 5:00pm.

So our new, extended deadline for posting your picks for Week 5: Thursday at 5:00pm.

Edina 4, Eden Prairie 3 (OT)
CC Bowlby’s even strength goal at 3:06 into overtime capped a big comeback by the Hornets over Lake Conference rival Eden Prairie. Trailing 0-2 after two periods of play, Edina finally got on the board and briefly went ahead in the third on successive goals by Vivian Jungles (2) and Bowlby. But Eagles forward Grace Kuipers tied it with three and a half minutes to go in regulation, sending the game into overtime, until Bowlby's heroics won it for Edina.

All seven of our contestants picked Edina to win, but I suspect the game was a lot closer than most were expecting.

In our other game tonight Farmington and Eagan are scoreless after two periods. Update to follow.

Eagan 1, Farmington 0 (OT)
Eagan’s Jenna Ruiz scored on the power play with just over a minute left in overtime to win it for the host Wildcats. On the goal Miss Ruiz was assisted by Emily Cronkhite and Brook Peplinski. For the game Farmington outshot the 12th ranked Wildcats by a 27-22 margin, but could not find a way to solve Eagan's senior goaltender, Ashley Larson. Congrats to her on a big win!

How close can these games get? Two games on this delayed opening night, and both decided in overtime? I try to choose games that I think could be close, but between all last week's one goal games and our first two this week going to OT, they can't get much closer.

But, except for one, our expert prognosticators cannot be fooled! In this evening's finale 6 of 7 favored Eagan to win, so heading into Friday's three games (including the rescheduled Wayzata/Tonka matchup) we're left with a six-way tie for first. Safe to say that you can expect three more nailbiters tomorrow...

Wayzata 3, Minnetonka 2
Kaci Johnson and Maddie McCollins each had a goal and an assist to lead the Trojans past the Skippers at the Pagel Community Center. But it was Sophie Urban who came up with the game winner with just 3:53 remaining in regulation. Minnetonka outshot Wayzata 23-17, including a decisive 12-3 margin in Period 2.

Maple Grove 3, Breck 2
The Crimson scored a goal in each period and upset the No. 2A ranked Mustangs on their home ice at the Maple Grove Community Center. Lauren Stenslie got what proved to be the game winning goal with 5:26 remaining, before Breck’s Stella Retrum closed the gap to one with 2:32 left. Shots were pretty even, with the Mustangs holding a slight 29-26 edge.

Blake 4, Andover 3
With just 1:25 left on the clock Blake’s Kylie Gage came up with the winning goal for the No. 1 ranked Class AA Blake Bears over the No. 4AA Andover Huskies. The 4-3 score was a repeat of when the two teams played one another in December, when Blake prevailed in the Schwan’s Cup Gold Division championship game. Two Gopher recruits figured prominently in tonight’s game, as Madeline Wethington had a three point night, with a goal and two assists, and Andover’s Peyton Hemp scoring twice in what proved to be a losing effort. Shots on goal were nearly dead even, with the Bears having a very slight 22-21 edge.

Our stretch of tight, one-goal games continues! And the same tightness applies to our Leaderboard. Outcomes of note this evening:
No one predicted the Maple Grove win over Breck, and
Everyone had Blake beating Andover.
And 5 of 7 got the Wayzata/Tonka game right.

So, with eight games to go, our winner of Week 5 is very much undetermined. Through this evening we’ve played five games, and five of us have 4 points each, all having missed just the Maple Grove upset 3-2 win over Breck:

Mr. KRACH – 4
Lake South Alum – 4
Feranged – 4
MNHockeyFan – 4
Massalsa – 4

Big night tomorrow, with four games on tap…should give us a little more separation.

Cloquet-Esko-Carlton 4, Thief River Falls 1
Taylor Nelson’s hat trick powered Cloquet-Esko-Carlton to a 4-1 win over Thief River Falls. Nelson now has 30 goals on the season, and 52 points overall. For the game the Lumberjacks outshot the Prowlers 23-16.

By all counts C-E-C’s win has to be considered a bit of an upset. In the KRACH overall rankings the Prowlers were at 41 vs. 44 for C-E-C. And in our contest only 2 (zooomx and feranged) of 7 guessers had C-E-C winning this game.

Hill-Murray 4, Benilde-St. Margaret’s 1
BSM got on the board first, just 3:36 into the game, but from then on it was all Pioneers as they rolled to a 4-1 victory. They also doubled up the Red Knights in the SOG department, finishing with 35 to BSM’s 17. Hill-Murray’s Rachel Kennedy was solid in goal, giving up just one on those 17 shots.

This one was no surprise to our panel, as everyone had the Pioneers prevailing.

Lakeville North 5, Eagan 3
This game was all about momentum, by period. Lakeville North outscored Eagan 3-0 in the first and 2-0 in the second, only to have the Wildcats turn the tables in the third, outscoring the Panthers 3-0...until they ran out of time. Multiple point-getters for North were RIT commit Sydney Antonakis, who had a goal and three assists, and Olivia Mattis, with two goals. For Eagan, Brooke Peplinski came up with a goal and two assists, while Jenna Ruiz contributed a goal and an assist.

Another mild upset, as going into the game the Panthers had a KRACH ranking of 28, well behind Eagan’s 16 ranking. And in our contest feranged was the sole prognosticator who had the Panthers pulling the upset – great job!

Eden Prairie 2, Minnetonka 0
Eden Prairie’s Macy Townsend and Carrie Byrnes scored the only two goals of the game as the Eagles beat Lake Conference foe Minnetonka 2-0, at home in the Eden Prairie Community Center. But the No. 1 Star of the game has to go to their sophomore goaltender, Molly Goergen, who stopped all 38 Skippers’ shots in posting the shutout. WOW!

In our Week 5 contest five of seven had EP winning this one, and that includes our big winner of the night – feranged – who correctly picked the winner in all four of tonight’s games. Another big “WOW” for feranged, who takes a two point lead heading into Monday’s two big games: Warroad vs. Roseau, and the rescheduled Blake vs. Forest Lake game.

Leaderboard through Saturday, February 2
feranged – 8 points
Mr. KRACH – 6
Lake South Alum – 6
massalsa – 6
Two with 5
One with 4

Blake 6, Forest Lake 1
In a match-up between two of the top-ranked teams in Class 2A, No. 1 Blake easily defeated No. 3 Forest Lake by a 6-1 score. It was just the second loss of the season for the Rangers, with their only other setback coming at the hands of the Edina Hornets back in mid-December. Lily Delianedis and Izzy Daniel were the two big offensive stars for the Bears. Delianedis had two assists to go along with her hat trick, while Daniel tallied two goals and assisted on two others…that’s nine points between these two Cornell recruits, against a very good team in Forest Lake. Forest Lake did have 18 shots on Blake goaltender Molly Haag, but Haag was able to make the save on 17 of them, for a save percentage of .944.

Overall, a definite “statement game” for the No. 1 ranked Bears. With the playoffs right around the corner, Section 6AA will be a real dogfight, with the likes of No. 1 Blake, No. 2 Edina and No. 6 Wayzata battling it out for the right to represent Section 6AA at State.

In our Week 5 pick’em contest, all seven of us had the Bears winning, so no gained or lost points in this one.

Waiting for the result of this week’s “Rivalry Game” up north; will post another update later (GO RAMS!)

And that's the way it ended, in a 1-1 tie, so no other points awarded in our Week 5 contest. A very closely contested game that I watched, one that could have gone either way. But in this one the D prevailed, keeping the number of "Grade A" scoring opportunities to a minimum. Excellent job by the D on both sides.

So in our Week 5 contest, no change in our Leaderboard, with our winner to be decided tomorrow night.

Wayzata 1, Maple Grove 0
9th grader Mckenna Hartle scored midway through the 2nd period – her first goal of the season – to give the No. 6AA-ranked Trojans the win over the 9AA-ranked Crimson. Wayzata outshot Maple Grove by a 29-22 margin, and their senior goaltender – Stephanie Garvis – was perfect in goal, stopping all 22 of the Crimsons’ 22 shots. Lucy Morgan was also extremely solid for the Crimson, giving up just one on Wayzata’s 29 shots, for a save percentage of .966.

Breck 5, Eden Prairie 2
Game detail not yet available. It’s late, so I’m going to wrap this up!

5 of 7 picked the winner in our first game, while in the second all 7 correctly had Breck prevailing over EP. And feranged, our leader going into today, was among those 5 who got both games right, which allows him to “cruise” and win the Week 5 Prognostication Championship! Of our 13 games in this extended week, 7 were decided by one goal or less, so getting 11 of 13 right is pretty special. Congrats to feranged!

Final standings:

1. feranged – 11 points

2. Mr. KRACH – 9
Lake South Alum – 9

4. MNHockeyFan – 8
massalsa – 8

6. zooomx – 7

P.S. Also wanted to acknowledge and thank those who participated in all (or most) of our contests this season.

Winners for each of the five weeks:

Week 1
zooomx - 5 of 7 (71%)
massalsa - 5 of 7 (71%)

Week 2
massalsa - 10 of 13 (77%)

Week 3
Mr. KRACH - 8 of 11 (73%)
massalsa - 8 of 11 (73%)

Week 4
Lake South Alum - 8 of 11 (73%)

Week 5
feranged - 11 of 13 (85%)

Congrats to each of our weekly winners!

AND, for those who participated in four (or all five) weeks, on a combined basis, our Top 3:

1. massalsa (5 weeks - 38/55: 69%
2. Mr KRACH (4 weeks) - 31/48: 65%
3. Lake South Alum (4 weeks) - 27/42: 64%

As the only participant to beat KRACH over the course of our contest, and the only one to win or tie 3 of our 5 weeks, our grand champ is, without a doubt, massalsa! Nice going, massalsa.

P.S. As the reigning champ massalsa will get to organize something similar to this next season! :P

Thanks MNHockeyFan! I hung on to some early prognosticating. It was an honor to beat KRACH!!!I I like having various mathematical models to rank teams but sometimes the models just do not pass the "smell test" so to speak.

I enjoy doing this and I will try to put something together next year. I thought that you did a great job of picking games for each week and also enjoyed reading your recaps. Thank you MNHockey!!!
