2020 Section Results

Post by MNHockeyFan » Tue Feb 04, 2020 11:01 am

With the exceptions of 7AA and 8AA the sections in both classes are now seeded. Post your comments on the seedings - and the results - in this thread.

6AA appears to be as strong as ever again.

Note: if you want to track all of the section results, the Hub is offering "Print Friendly" pages for both classes, starting here:

In Section 3AA, second seed Eastview needed two overtimes to dispatch seventh seed, upset minded Park 5-4. Josie Ellingson with the game winner.

Also in 3AA, despite being outshot 34-20, third seed Burnsville escaped sixth seed Lakeville North 2-1. Allie Urlaub with the winner in that one.

So in the semifinal it'll be #1 Apple Valley vs. #4 Eagan, and #2 Eastview vs. #3 Burnsville.

Heading into "Super Saturday's" 31 games there have been very few upsets of note. Perhaps the biggest so far, if you go by the seedings, is in Class 3A where second seeded Marshall lost to seventh seed Fairmont by a 2-0 score.

In Class AA the surprise so far is in Section 4, where sixth seeded Mounds View pulled the upset over third seed Roseville, 4-2. And in Section 7 forth seeded Grand Rapids was upended by the No. 5 seed, Elk River in a close one, 3-2.

More to come tomorrow, for sure.

WOW, Northfield over Lakeville South. Shots 54-20 in favor of South, Northfield goalie must’ve been amazing.

I think what is more telling from the stat lines at the hockey hub is that Wayzata were the deserved winners. Wayzata outshot Blake by an order of 2:1 in the third period when Blake had to press to get back in the game.

I realize nobody's going to shed a tear for Blake, their 7 current D1 commits and the 7-9 girls on the roster who will also go D1 in the coming years. But I do wonder if this is where not having a JV is hurting their program.

Blakes JV team was not great prior to folding a couple seasons ago. As an example, Andover, Edina, Wayzata, and Maple Grove's JV teams are strong and dominant, similar to their varsity counterparts. Blake's JV was nowhere near that. So I would doubt having their JV program still running would make a difference one way or the other.

Andover 8, Forest Lake 0

Earlier in the year Flake kept it reasonably close, losing only 3-1. What happened tonight?

Edit: Just saw the highlights (lowlights for Forest Lake). Nights like this will happen, even to good teams.

Looks like on the Class A side, all the sections went according to chalk except for Hutchinson, the number 2 seed, over 1 seed Mound-Westonka.

Which should make for a more competitive Class A tournament. Usually, other than the 4 vs. 5 game, you see blowouts in the quarterfinal round.

Can anyone who attended the Wayzata/Edina game offer their observations? From the box score the two teams had an equal number of shots (10 apiece) both in the 2nd and 3rd periods, which is and of itself a bit of a surprise. Wayzata mounted a comeback in the 3rd to make it a 2-3 game, but it appears it became a matter of too little, too late. Tough loss for the Trojans who made it very interesting against the consensus No. 1 team in the State...but with the way Andover went about crushing a very good Forest Lake team, maybe which team gets the No. 1 seed at State is a little up in the air? Probably Edina on the strength of its head-to-head, but that was early on, and Andover seems to be surging right now...

Opinions on who gets seeded No. 1?
