Definitely can understand the conflict between coaching and wanting to see your kid play.

He had considerable success inheriting a strong program after Brano S. died-- seems like they underperformed this year given the number of D1 recruits despite the challenge of less than 90% save percentage on average.

Will be interesting to see how they replace all of the graduates. During the regular season the team got 90 goals from players in grades 10-12. Seniors accounted for 87 of the 90.

I think the focus should be on the state tourney - should be a good one with a couple good quarterfinal games, and some good contests that follow.

But since you mentioned it, I think you missed a senior - it was 92 out of 95. They clearly won’t score 113 goals as a group next year. But Eden prairie and BSM were top 10 teams scoring only 86 and 87, so there’s room to score less and still succeed.

I imagine a chunk of the scoring gap will come from the three freshman who scored 20+. That trio could clear twice+ that number next year in significantly elevated roles and ice time. Broz in particular will produce a lot more next year - one of the most talented ‘23s given a tiny role this year with the team built around the three seniors. Combine that with better team play that brings more offense from their three D1 committed D, and I’d be shocked if they don’t comfortably clear 3 goals per game. It’s always an open question about talent that might migrate to Blake, too.

They should get some great candidates for the coaching job - it has to be considered one of the preeminent ones in girls hockey in the state. Whoever the hire will generate enthusiasm - I’m sure they will be fine. They will struggle for a top 3 seeding in sections next year, and would require a miracle upset to beat Edina, but next year should lay groundwork for a very strong team the following two years.

Whitney Colbert served as a head coach at this year’s camp after working as a staff member at Girls Player Development camps over the last six years, including both the 15 and 16/17 camps. She’s also worked various camps at the district level.
Colbert just completed her third season as an assistant coach with the Union College women’s hockey team after spending two seasons in the same role for Connecticut College. As a player, she skated four seasons at Trinity College (CT) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sociology.
“My goal this week was for these players to make the most of the experience. It’s important for them to not only learn and grow, but take that next step and bring the information they get here back with them to continue developing,” said Colbert. “There are so many great people at these camps and it’s important they create those relationships and absorb what they’ve learned to help enhance their own game.”

Breck is on the precipice of .... something. Retrum and Courneia bailed in 2019. Halverson and Messner bailed in 2020. The last Zumwinkle and oldest Lindsay graduate in May.

The talk of "Breck to AA" can probably stop now. After losing Messner, they'll be the clear underdog to Chisago in the 5A section final, and a regular season record of 11-7 or 10-8 looks reasonable, with Wayzata (x2), Warroad, Gentry and Edina still to be played.

Breck's four losses are to the #3 AA team (twice), the #1 (arguably 2 or 3) A team, and the #5 AA team on the day their coaches quit. None of those are bad losses. I don't think any of the teams you listed will be looking past them, and I would expect them to win a couple of those games.
