Recruiting window for '22s

Post by j4241 » Mon Jun 15, 2020 7:29 am

Today is the first day '22s may be approached by college coaches (since the window closed with the rule change last spring). This year's group is a little bit of guinea pigs - both coaches and players. The rule changed last year, but '21s were already pretty far down the process - many top players were already committed, there was a short window when they couldn't communicate between the old rule and the June 15th date, and there were relatively few new commitments of '21s over the rest of the summer.

It seems to me that the new process will put coaches under unfamiliar pressure - both being unsure where they stand with kids and unsure what other schools might be further along with kids they are interested in. That has the potential to create some interesting dynamics. If any people are willing to share first hand experience over the next few weeks, I think this board would find it interesting.

The date for coaches to contact athletes directly was yesterday for the 2022 grad year; however, no in person campus visits can take place until Aug 1 I think. I know their were lots of calls happening yesterday (my daughter said some of her friends got calls) so will be interesting to see how many commitments are announced in the next few days or if girls will wait to go see a coach/campus in person in August. With the pandemic, people are obviously less likely to want to travel but not sure if that will push up commit timing or push it back. I'm guessing any commits announced in the next couple weeks will be for players that were already talking to a scout prior to the rule change last year.

Two ladies announced their commitments yesterday, both to UMD. Chloe Finnerty (D) from North Wright County, and Dani Brunnette (F) from Blaine- congrats to them!

My trusty correspondent tells me Finnerty committed to UMD in April 2019 but, still, congrats to both her and Dani.

My daughter also confirms that 2022s were receiving emails and calls yesterday. It's very nice for the girls that committed pre-communications ban that they can talk to their future coaches again after 15 months of silence.

The D1 Council has extended the recruiting dead period until 8/31. Bad news for recruiting and showcases.

So was it lifted for a time starting June 15 and now they have closed it?

There are two timelines going on here:

(1) Telephone / email / video chat communication with recruits - Class of 2022s were allowed to communicate again with coaches as of 6/15. That hasn't changed.

(2) In-person evaluation has been shut down for all sports. That's the "dead period." A coach cannot evaluate a prospect off campus during a dead period. That was first pushed to 6/30, then 7/31, now 8/31.

A bad deal for 2022s. An incredibly bad deal for 2021s.

For the 2021s if they are waiting on a deal good luck, it’s time look at D3.
