XPL

Post by j4241 » Wed Oct 28, 2020 2:35 pm

This board is part-time Holy Family cult meeting, and part-time ghost town. But now that there's actualy (kinda/sorta) high school hockey to talk about, lets! XPL games started this week. No scores posted anywhere (that I'm aware of), no stats. Anyone watch any? Good games?

There are no Holy Family players taking part in the league, so I'm not sure the league has enough of a cutting edge to be worthy of analysis.

Wrong thread! But that looks like awfully good hockey. I imagine the "Selects teams" will be pretty good - haven't seen rosters, but I assume all the Elite League kids that are not on teams participating.

Sorry about the placement. Moved it over to OS thread. Yes, should be good hockey.

So the XPL is shut down due to the pause. Teams played roughly half of the scheduled 10 games. They have no intention of making up the games but also will not be refunding the players. Their reasoning:

we are unable to refund money to participants for the cancellations due to the Covid pandemic. The XPL/MGHCA is still obligated to pay for much of the ice time, coaches stipends, etc.

First, no, they are not obligated to pay for the ice for the games cancelled by the pause. Not a single rink is making any renters pay for ice during the pause. If they pre-paid, then at worst they would be credited for future ice but should be able to request refund given the uniqueness of the league. Same for referees, they don’t have to pay them for cancelled games. Even if the coaches get full stipend, and throw in administrative costs, they’re still sitting on a ton of extra money. I would say a conservative estimate is $65,000-75,000. Over 50 teams, 20+ players per team, $210/player.

So where is this money going? Is the MGHCA keeping all of this money to fund other future leagues?

Edit: Looks like closer to 2/3 of the games were completed. That varied quite a bit by team, some teams played only 4 or 5 games, others played 7-8 games. My question still remains... where does all of that money go?

So you paid for 10 games. $21 per game. You played 7 games. $30 per game.

The league provided a service. Refunds would be difficult. They may have encountered unforeseen costs, or they will be able to charge a little less for a future program.

Frankly, the rate at which they put this whole league together in a week was very impressive.

I’ve got no problem with them keeping my $27.

Multiply that $27 by 20 players per team, by 36 teams.

That's a lot of money to keep when you're not providing the service people signed up for.

It is different for everyone as I said. If your daughter played 7-8 games, you probably wouldn't think much about a refund. When your daughter played 4-5 games, you start to think you're getting short changed. Obviously not the fault of MGHCA but they still need to make it right. And I know refunding everyone would be difficult. But certainly not impossible.

You're right, I'll survive if they keep my $42. But as I said that's a lot of money left over when you multiply that by 54 teams of 20 players.
