But, you first and foremost have to look at Head-to-head & common opponents before SOS and when doing so you'll see that FL played many section opponents NC early and thus likely the current configuration.

FL's #27 or 126 SOS wasn't enough to overcome beter records but much lower SOS out of many teams above them (41, 43, 53, 64, 83. 106). GRG pulled off a splendid victory, was anyone's game through the 1st. Solid net-minding after a nervy start all around kept the lightning momentum steam rolling ahead. The officiating was a bit shoddy at times, but nothing that would have changed the course of the game. If anything it helped GRG, as the tone of the game decidely shifted to GRGs favor after they overcame 2 mins of a 5 on 3 disadvantage.
#6 & #10 for the opposition were really on their game and made it fun to watch. Solid play on all shifts, all the players really gave it their best effort to the end. One of GRG's players took a nasty head/shoulder fall into the boards, if she can get healthy (hopefully she's gonna be o.k) to keep the line dynamics going, and they put a similar performance together against cloquet, they are serious contenders for state.

The Lightning pretty much played a complete game. Emily Erickson had 2 goals, Molly Arola scored 2 goals, Heather Horgen netted a goal, and I believe Natalie Newton had the other. Rantala had about 25 saves, and played fairly well. I thught Stevie Larsen played a great game for the Lightning as she drew two penalties, each leading to a powerplay goal. All 6 defense played very well...I did't really see a weakness. The only worry I have is that Cloquet's team speed will be too much for the Lightning defense...

How is it that GR gets the home ice advantage in the finals?
Since CEC had a better record and is the higher seed, shouldn't this game be in the LumberDome

Doesn't seem fair does it

It is a rotational basis, and is chosen well before playoffs. Last year semis were in Cloquet and finals were down south and this year the semis were down south and finals are in Rapids.

The key to the game for the Lightning is their physical play. Last game Molly Arola was a physical force on the ice. She needs to be, but needs to be clean and stay out of the box. Kayla Clafton is good at using her body to make plays. I would like to see more physical play out of Hannah 'Norway' Johnson. If she can get her 6'0" frame in front of some girls, she can slow them down. The Lightning will need production from their second line as well. Look from Jessi Hiipakka, Stevie Larsen, and Michelle Tanner to put up some points. Also, look for the team to be unselfish. I expect a lot of crisp, hard passes. They Lightning defense has to be aggressive, especially Maggie Rothstein and Heather Horgen. If they force the issue at their offensive blue line, they can creat more scoring chances for Arola-Emily Erickson-Natalie Newton. I almost forgot, the Lightning have to win the goaltending battle. With Lisa Rantala nominated for homecoming this week, she really needs to set that aside for 51 minutes on Thursday. If the Lightning can do these things and focus for 51 minutes...then they should be playing 2/23 at 8:00 PM vs. Bemidji or Elk River.

No doubt that GRG can take this game. They have to get up early and keep it up. Cloquet struggles in the scoring department and if the Lightning can get a few past Thunder it should tie up the game. Arola has been peak lately in her physical play, watch for her to be key in this game. Also, watch for Newton, she's a tough girl. Definitely not somebody I would get in the way of. Moving Horgen back to D was one of the better moves they've had, she's awesome out there on the line. Along with the other D, they are a solid defense team. I'm pullin for the Lightning on this one.

Krach says 476/58-to-1 or about 8-to-1 odds in CEC's favor... but let's be honest in that you can throw all the ratings, rankings, odds, etc. out the window when it comes to a section championship game like this!

Should be a great game - wish it was close enough to justify the drive for me!

5th time in 6 yrs for Cloquet. And what a game it was. The Lightning struck early, 17 seconds into the game. Cloquet got a breakaway goal in the second from #18. GRG retook the lead less than a minute later on the power play. Emily Erickson scored the first one and Molly Arola the second one for the Lightning. Cloquet tied it with 5 minutes left in the third. That freshman girl got that one. Then the fun started. Both ovetimes were up and down, up and down. Finally, on their 46th shot of the night, the Jacks scored on a rebound, that darn freshman again. The Lightning threw 33 shots on goal in just a great hockey game. a FULL HOUSE at the IRA, and it was LOUD!!! Best girls hockey game I have ever been at. The Lightning will make another great run next season, count on it.
