I do know one player frequently referred to in this forum who received eight calls from D-I programs on 7/1...though that's probably not too unusual for several of the players frequently discussed herein.

Should add wishes for good fortune to all players hoping to move to the next / collegiate level. I hope all get the opportunity they're looking for resulting in much ice time and an overall worthwhile and FUN experience.

I also have some selfish wishes of my own...hoping to continue watching the exploits of many of my favorite HS players in the WCHA, MIAC & NCHA.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ookyone at: 7/29/05 5:00 pm

Well Brooky...

There you have it. Another MN kid wearing a maroon and gold jersey. It just won't have an "M" on it.

This is a good decision for her as a person, player, and STUDENT-athlete. Best of luck to #21.

Players Leaving the State

Post by ARM »

As a Gopher fan, the downside to the increasing depth of the talent pool in Minnesota is that so many of the best players one watches come up through the ranks will play their college hockey elsewhere. Unfortunately, when that elsewhere is someplace like Boston, it makes it unlikely I will get to see them play after they complete their high school career.

Selfish views aside, it is nice to see the ever-increasing opportunities available to players like Ellison and Thunstrom. Best of luck to Allie and all of those who will be committing and signing in the months to come.

funny, a couple years ago on this site Allie questioned why anyone would leave Mn and the Gophs to play elsewhere....

Looks like she found the her elusive answer.

I think as you grow up, you start to think through these options that are afforded to the best athletes. Times do change the thought process I suppose, but I can't fault anyone for going after a quality education and what should be a wonderful athletic experience as well. Not to knock the U - as I spent some time as a graduate student there too - but different people obviously look for different things at different stages I guess.

I guess some of this plays in to the whole open enrollment/public-private deal too @ the HS level.

Factors in College Choice

Post by ARM »

There are so many pros and cons that can go into a choice of a college or university, even for a non-athlete. Many of these can and do change regularly. For example, I'm not sure any of the friends with whom I started college graduated with their original major.

Many of those who pick Minnesota list the opportunity to play in front of family and friends high on their list of reasons. For someone like Natalie Darwitz, who most likely could have gone anywhere, that was even more of a consideration after spending her last two years of high school in Lake Placid, NY. One downside of a choice like B.C. is that you may not play a single game within driving distance for your family during your entire college career. Still, that is just one of many factors which have to be weighed in a decision. Sometimes it comes down to what feels right.

Has anobody considered that part of Thunstrom's choice on committing to BU may have been that the U of MN was not actively recruting her? Maybe the U of MN needs to take a better look at their recruiting process.

U of M Recruiting

Post by ARM »

It's BC not BU. While I guess that is theoretically possible, my guess is that the Gophers were interested. Minnesota's recruiting classes have consistantly ranked right near the top, so I don't think that their process is as broken as you suggest.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... nhs>ARM at: 7/31/05 2:27 pm

I think that it's easy to stay close to home usually. I give the kids credit that decide to go away - as much as I'd selfishly like to see them stay in the area.

In the Thunstom case, I'd say she's going to get an amazing education and also experience. I only wish I had that opportunity!

I would highly question any team that wasn't at least considering Allie as a top recruit from the state. I can't speak to the gophs recruiting, but they've had some very good players over the years and seem to be sucessful. It's quite possible that some just choose other options that are better for them personally???

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ckeyfan at: 7/31/05 6:01 pm

This is Allies father , The U of M was recruiting Allie and they
were very open and honest with her , they did not know what
they were going to do yet , Allie was also being heavily recruited by several WCHA schools and did have other offers ,
Reality is that her and her mother traveled to Boston to visit ,
BC , Harvard , and Northeastern . They both really loved the
school , the area , the coach and everything at BC . Allie had let every school she talked to seriously know that she wanted
to commit early , so she could focus on and enjoy her senior
year at NORTH . When she 1st started talking about BC , in early July , I , for selfish reasons was not real thrilled with the
idea , as I love to watch her play every game ... But now I am
very excited at the opportunity . BC has been ranked in the top 40 U.S. colleges and institutions academically for the last
10 years . Its about the education and experience , the hockey is a bonus . So it was a personnal decision , that Allie
made , and I am very proud of her . Thanks go out to all of you that have made nice comments about her . The U of M
did nothing wrong , they were very professional and are still
committed to getting the best players they can . and we wish
them nothing but Good Luck . Along with all the other Mn.
WCHA schools .

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... g>FSDOG at: 8/1/05 1:14 pm

FSDOG,

I can tell where Allie got her class from.
Congratulation to Allie and her wonderful family. I for one will miss seeing her play, I have enjoyed watching her for the last few years. Congrats to BC for getting one of our best.
Best of luck this coming season, and she is my #1 choice for Ms. Hockey.

Mike, well said! I couldn't be more happy for her. I agree 100% about making an early decision. Her senior year will be a TON more enjoyable now that she can just play it without the pressure and enjoy!!!

I'm sure it didn't hurt that Allie played for Coach Mutch at the recent 17/18 Festival in Lake Placid. It certainly gave the two a chance to get to know each other and the visit to BC closed the deal. Having been there myself, I can understand why; it's a great school. But be forewarned FSDOG, once in Boston most people want to stay.

Congrats Allie! Nice to get the weight lifted off the shoulders huh? I just hope the people here in Minnesota will get reports, etc... on her progress as many of the kids who go out east don't get any more media coverage after they leave. Good Luck!

Speaking of media coverage... I don't think the ones that stay here get enough!!!

The best way to follow our stars that stay or go is at www.uscho.com I think.

The comment by FSDOG. "It's about the education and experience; the hockey is a bonus," is probably the most intelligent post I have read on this board. It really sums up what every parent should be thinking when it comes to their daughter and their college education. An education at a great school is going to be a lot more valuable than the hockey part of the equation. Let's face it, being a star female hockey player does not guarantee success in their post college years. I would like to read about these players having post-athletic careers like Bill Baker (Oral surgeon); Eric Heiden (orthopedic surgeon); Steve Christoff (Pilot), etc. I hope they all understand it is the education part that will help them have suceessful post-hockey careers. Question: Did Allie get the great wheels from her mom or her dad?

Early Signings

Hi Funstroms! We are so excited for Allie. She will be a fabulous addition to BC and will have some other great Minnesota girls on her team as well. We know Al as that silly little sister at Hazel Park; who has grown into an exciting player, great student and friend. Watching her grow up has been so much fun! Wishing you all the best as you head into the greatest year of high school.

Congratulations Mike and Allie!

Johanna is really excited to hear the news that Allie will be joining her at Boston College! You said it very well as for the reasons to go there. Education was our first choice as well, but the team is an up and coming team! Coach Mutch has done a wonderful job in his first two years there and he is bringing in all the right players to make a great team. They should be improved next year with the recruiting class he is bringing in and when Allie's class gets there they should make some noise! We'll have to get together at the Ice Cats next game and talk more on the subject. See you soon!

I don't think I can think of two girls more deserving of anything! Good luck to them in the future! Minnesota let some good ones get away this time, but Boston College is one of the greatest schools in the world. Go Eagles!
