Ms. Hockey 2006

Lots of "pre-season" speculation... Many have listed their preliminary top 10, 5, etc. in another thread (linked below)...

<a href="http://p100.ezboard.com/fmnhsfrm7.showM ...

Also curious who people think would be a top 5 D (if we awarded a "Ms. D" award (awarded to the best D that plays the D position well (i.e. takes care of the D responsibilities first), in addition to any other strong attributes))...

I've talked about the notion of top 10/then top 5 Ms. D, Ms. G, And Ms. F and then picking a Ms. Hockey out of the final 3 winners of the D/F/G award before... I think this would be best, as many would argue D don't get recognized enough, and also that D & G should be able to be called "Ms. Hockey" - not just F's (or D from time-to-time)...

I would say that this list below is the starting point for narrowing the list... Focusing strictly on D for the moment, my top five would be as follows...

BERIT JOHNSON - Yale
MICHELE MAUNU - UMN
JACKIE ROBERTSON - Bemidji
KATHLEEN ROSSO - MN State Mankato
ALEXANDRA ZEBRO - UMN

...I still like the idea of starting with 10 at D, 10 at F & narrowing down from that for the final five candidates. I think I'd keep the top goaltender separate. Being named the #1 goalie in Minnesota is just as prestigious as Ms. Hockey..at least in my view.

#21 still the overall front runner in my opinion.

Good D list, I believe Farni needs to be in there. It's just tough which of those I would take out.

I also think Lynn Hillen should be mentioned in the top 10 forwards she is off to a great start, and in my mind is the best defensive center in the g game right now. On top of that she has been a consistent scorer over the years and is carrying her teams offensive load right now.

The most dominant player in my opinion , is #14 from stillwater. I have sen her play numerous times this year, and she is the hardest working 2 way player that I have seen! Not to mention that they have 1 of the toughest schedules of the year. She is well deserving of being Ms. Hockey!

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... >FanIam at: 12/22/05 11:31 am

The player who is most deserving of Ms Hockey 2006 is #2 Whitney Olson from Proctor/Hermantown/Marshall. She is a great skater and stickhandler and works hard every shift that she is on the ice!

there is no doubt in anyones mind who Ms. Hockey 2006 is it will be Kala Bugganski of anoka she has been on varsity since 6th grade and been one of the points leaders every year since eighth she is carring a mediocre anoka team to a winning and probably state bound season. Good Luck K Bugga

Cloquet played PHM's JV team....not the varsity. You're wrong on that one. The varsity hasn't even played Cloquet yet.

Well, the regular season is winding down. Any additional, updated or changed thoughts on this subject? Looks as though most of those who many figured as strong contenders are backing up those thoughts with outstanding seasons. A strong, strong class making the nominating of candidates and ultimately picking a 2006 Ms. Hockey extremely difficult.

Wanted to bump the thread up too.

I would like to know what others think of Stillwater's #14 performance the other night against Moundsview. 8 goals in 2 periods! Seems like a shameless campaign for Ms Hockey. From the times of the goals reported in the paper, it looks as if she was out there most of the time during those 2 periods. Shows little class and respect for the other team and the game of hockey.

I think exactly the opposite. If that were the case she would have played in the 3rd. We supposed to sit all players after 2-3 goals now?

I think a player...any player deserves two periods of hockey regardless of their personal pts. production. Holding a player out of the 3rd all together is sufficiently "pulling your punches."

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ookyone at: 1/26/06 12:01 pm

I think you are trying to justify this. No player needs to score 8 goals and 3 assists even if they were playing the whole game. Was she moving the puck around? This is not a Mite team with 1 superstar bringing the puck down. Why not (after the first 3-4 goals) move the puck to another girl who maybe hasn't scored too much this season. Or maybe to the defense. I wonder what the Moundsview coach had to say about it after the game. After 2 periods they better of pulled her! Noticed her linemate #16 had 2 goals and 2 assists.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... 1HOCKEY at: 1/26/06 12:31 pm

I don't have to justify anything...I'm nothing but a hockey fan. It's just my opinion that sitting a player for the entire 3rd period is completely sufficient in an effort towards sportsmanship. You can't have players being removed from games after 17 - 30 minutes of play (or less). They're there to learn, improve and have fun just like the / all other players.

any coach " and i use that word lightly in this case " that allows his star player to score his teams 11th and 13th goal of the game , while the opponent has only 1 , in any period even the 1st is inexcusable , especially when it is her 7th and 8th of the game ! This decision is entirely on the coach and
is typical of this coach's attitude ... this is not new to him ...
poor behavior , I sat behind his bench last year at Schwans cup ,, during a game vs. i believe nsp ... he was swearing
with very vulgur language at the opposing coach during the
game .. i was shocked and left the game immediately , and returned to watch another game at ridder , rather than have my child witness that behavior on the bench .. Any doubters
on this fact , just ask anyone on either bench , as the players on both teams , looked very embarrassed by this . The coaches are the problem , not the players .

I agree with Brooky on this. You can't punish a player because she has skill. To make her sit out before the third period is ridiculous. Yes, 8 goals and 3 assists is a lot of points, but she's a hockey player. Let her play.

I couldn't agree more with both of you that a good player should not be punished because she is playing a weaker team. But this just looks to me like a player who just wants to get her stats up.

I agree with turdpolisher. The guy has dreams of having his name on the Stanley Cup. He's coaching girls who are 14-18 in age, is he a solid role model? I don't know if he is or not... but his coaching strategies, philosophies and behavior should be questioned. It's great to be intense and competitive, but remember where your at and who the game is for. Brooky can taste the warm hot chocolate now.

mnhock -- I'd like to send you a personal email regarding some of your thoughts but I see you don't have email enabled...things I'd rather not say in public (regardless of the philosophy of others who think such comments are acceptable...which is fine) but I'll just say we may very well be "aligned" on some matters of opinion.

P.S. I think I still have a better than average chance of losing the "Hot Chocolate Race" when looking at the remaining schedules for the principles.

Tough to say....

College coaches vote on Ms Hockey... They are smart and will not look at overall stats. The good coaches are going to look at who those top girls scored against. The girls that put up points vs. top teams are going to do better in voting. The player who makes the players around them better will do better. It's not about the player that scores 60 goals and has 15 assists that wins the award; after all, those 15 assists are probably all rebound goals and no passes!

It would be tough for me to judge a coach unless I know him. I don't know this coach, and he did pull her after two periods. I wasn't at the game, was she out every other shift? 8 goals and 3 assists brings me back to high school hockey in the middle 90's when great players could do whatever they wanted...

Also, I cannot remember what the shots were... If I remember right...they were a low number...

Lastly, #14 is a great player and should be a top 5 Ms Hockey finalist!

Hockeyhead

brookyone, my email account is working I believe.
I'm not going to start a bashing the coach thread here, HS coaches work very hard for the $2.00 an hour they make. Schied has been at Stillwater for some time now, his teams would be competitive if Jones wasn't there. They work hard, skate well and move the puck. He has a way to get them going. This might sit well with some, while others will question it. As along as the coaches best interest is the players/program, I have no problem. Its not about the coach at this level.

hockeyhead,
I also agree that Chelsey Jones should be a finalist for Ms. Hockey . But based on a previous post that you made , I
believe I know whom you are referring to with the 60 goal and
15 assist comment . I watch almost all of her games , and most of her goals are on pure break a ways , she is a sniper
like you said !! most of the time the pass from # 15 comes from the defensive zone or center ice , and she out races the defense to the puck and then to the net for the shot .#15 does make her better , BUT she also makes # 15 better , by being able to finish ,the same pass to almost anyone else is just that , a pass , no points ,because most others would not be able to break free for the pass let alone get a quality shot. . as far as the assists only being rebounds , you are wrong ! There are many
passes that are not finished every game . Plus most teams try to shadow her , leaving more ice space for her teammates to roam , this makes others better also . Both her and # 15 deserve to be finalists . IMHO .. along with Jones and 10 - 15
others . Speed is very important and should not be overlooked !
as well as being able to finish , when looking at what should be
considered as the criteria ! This is a very strong class , esp.
forwards . I still cannot believe that the U OF M , did not get
any of them ... Good Luck to all of the Girls , being considered for this award . We may all have our favorites , but all of the
girls have earned the right to be mentioned for their efforts .
Beauty is in the eye's of the Beholder !!!

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... olisher at: 1/27/06 6:40 am

mnhock -- I'll attempt to email you later when time allows with an explanation, but I do want to go on record publicly to note I was in no way addressing the character of any coach. I don't know any HS coach well enough to make any such judgement. My thoughts were of a completely different nature altogether.
