Nice to see Edina pick up those W's after all the ties to start the year!!! Edina is a very solid team, and will make some noise come sections I believe...

Didn't see the game, but heard Hopkins upset Wayzata 4-3 tonight at plymouth. Has to be the biggest upset of the season to date.

Wayzata is very good but I don't think that they can hang with EP, but it doesn't seem anyone can keep them under a touchdown! If they give up 3 or 4 to a team like Hopkins that does not help them when they face 3 outstanding lines in EP. Hopkins is up and solid from what I have seen though. Same with Armstrong. They are ok now which is a HUGE improvement. I don't know if Stillwater can stop EP or Roseville. I can't wait for Kaposia to see what will happen there...

machine,

ep usually begins the season very hot, as in past seasons. as the year goes on they just don't seem to improve as much as other teams and by the end of the year they are usually taking it on the chin a little. so far this year they may have played one respectable team so far.

i expect later in the year both roseville and stillwater will be able to beat them, kaposia time might be a little early yet for roseville but it still should be good.

Hubba,

I agree EP starts out fast and doesn't pick up steam like some teams. I wouldn't say Roseville and Stillwater do improve either. Both teams lost in the section semis and quaters respectfully! Stillwater early and Roseville even earlier. After Stillwater beats SSP last year they don't even make it to te section finals.
Teams like Anoka and Centenniel have shown the most improvement over the season, not the other two. I am open to be corrected! I love stats and past issues...

Just one guys take on this...

Hockeyhead

Was anybody at the Hopkins-Wayzata game? What was the story? Lots of penalties? Injuries? Goalie had a bad night? Somebody missing? (e.g. one of Edina's girls had to leave after 2 periods to sing in a school choral concert last night). Enquiring minds...

As for Armstrong getting better - YES against Edina last night. They'll continue getting better into the future with their roster only showing 2 seniors this year. Almost all the rest are sophomores & juniors.

The Armstrong goalie, Karlee Andryski, was hot (46 saves), and there were a couple of non-goals that people standing near the goal said were pulled back out of the net before the refs could see whether they were goals or not. But that's the way the puck bounces.

Head,

on roseville all we have to do is look at the team record over the first half of the season vs. the last half of the season. i don't have the stats at my fingertips but i think if one looks it up over the past couple years they will see a second half record that is quite a bit better than the first half. roseville lost to ssp last year in what was a much closer game than anticipated. they went into the section as an underdog and went as far as they could.

stillwater, after beating ssp had one of the best records in state last year. i didn't expect them to make it to state last year, they just didn't have the experience to get through that section. this year they will be better prepared come section time because of hard lessons learned last year.

i agree that centenniel improves much during the year but i think anoka seems to be fairly steady throughout the year.

i think ep is probably the best team in state but i just can't see them winning it this year unless the team attitude has changed somewhat. they are their biggest hurdle and i can't see it changing until next year...

Way/Hopkins

Post by ghshockeyfan »

BIG win for Hopkins, I agree! Shot count was 21/17 Way favor I believe. I didn't see the game, but I think that Hopkins is a better team than most give them credit for. Same is true of Edina as well I think.

We aren't really splitting hairs but I think that EP has made some (off season) growths in comparison. Amazing what a school 10 miles away can do for ya...

I would not say that EP cools off, and yes others do improve more as the season goes on because they have more ground to gain! EP can be beat and probably will. Section 6 is outstanding and all it takes is an amazing goalie performance let's never forget that! BUT I still say EP over Stillwater and Roseville and for sure Wayzata but they are all good and could beat them if given a few shots.

Notice each of these teams have top ten players and top ten coaching staffs. It is just that EP always has more of everything... 05-06 may be there year...?

This has to be EP's year. No pressure, but I think that they have a great shot at it. But... as with any team, you can't look past sections. And especially in 6. Edina, Hopkins could upset Way or EP and you can't look past any team come that time of year for the reasons mentioned by machine.

ghs,

anytime a team is ranked #1 there is pressure. i can't pick them this year simply because the way they handled themselves last year and i really don't think they will or can change this year.....

possible i can pick them next year...

Hubba,

Maybe I am the only one that doesn't know this! How did EP handle themselves last year? What or how does this seem to effect them this year? I don't know a lot about this team, and have only seen box scores. I was more familar with their team in the past years. As a strong girls hockey supporter, my hope is that we can only generalize situations and not use names but rather slight indications or examples of past experiences.

By your post it seems that you think the problem will be over next year! That leads me to think it is a problem with some of the upper-classmen,

Please feel free to drop a note in my "inbox" if you wish to not voice this out loud for all to hear!

Hockeyhead

head,

you have good intuition...

well known fact last year (at least among players and i would think many coaches and some fans) that with the teams good start and vaulting to a #1 rating the ego's got much larger than any helmet some of these girls could find....

and yes, one of the main (if not the main player) player is still on the team this year which much of this bs talk etc... originated..... i've heard and seen it from her for the last two years so judging from the past i just can't see it changing. i'm happy to report the heads were deflated for them the last two years also, maybe a lesson learned?

E.P. probably has the most individual talent on paper. But the question will be as the season goes on will there be enough pucks to go around for everyone. Team chemistry is probably more important in hockey than any other team sport. That may be the biggest challenge for the coaching staff at EP. If they can get everyone on the same page - wins are the most important thing, they will probably come out on top. Many coaches find it easier to deal with a team made up of mostly "grinders" and perhaps one player who can put the puck in the net. Should be an interesting section to watch.
