rube,

if you can name one thing that isn't being abused i would be shocked. as i said, it isn't fair. just like it wouldn't be fair if we suddenly didn't allow kids to transfer or even penalizing them for transferring.

the solution that would incorporate an individuals right to attend a school of choice and participate in an athletic program of choice without discriminating against them or anyone? take it out of the damn hands of the mshsl and schools......

Let's remember Open Enrollment was about academics. It was not suppose to be for athletics (an extracurricular activity). I do not believe that students have an inherent right as far as athletics go. The legistlation needs to be adjusted to close this loop-hole.

Re: Transfers = Championships
It seems like the predominant reason for transferring schools is to be part of a "winning HS program" and ultimately to become noticed by D1 coaches and obtain the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow - A DIVISION 1 SCHOLARSHIP. This assumes that there are D1 calibre players that are missed by D1 scouts and coaches. Who are these players that have been passed over because they don't play for the so-called top teams? I don't know of any. I think top players get noticed no matter where they play. IMO, there is a lot of needless time, money and energy expended by parents who move their kids from their hometown school to the so-called hockey powerhouses.

blood,

i was thinking the same thing about athletics not being a "right" but a privledge. my lines of thinking were anyone who plays a sport must meet certain academic requirements above the "normal" which is in place now. but then again we discriminate against the students that just are not as bright as the others. but i do think this is the correct path to follow as far as a "right" and "privledge".

I disagree that all talent gets found. True stay at home D will get missed in any program, but often get found only as D1 prospects in top notch State Tourney like programs unfortunately.

gymnast hits it on the head. And as much criticism as AAA and off-season tournaments have received in creating the current environment, it has provided an outlet for exposure like never before. The past few years have been explosive for off-season girls hockey. It's clear there are now more opportunities than ever for scouts and coaches to see gifted players on lesser programs compete alongside those from strong programs. It's now hard to miss a gifted player unless they simply choose not to participate in off-season tournaments and programs such as AAA, Elite camps, NDP, etc., etc. Eventually, once things settle in, the growth of these opportunities should reduce the O/E trend.

Or am I just wrong and is the allure of a HS title that strong? Strong enough that a star player in a weaker program might sit at the end of the bench on a strong one in the name of "exposure" and/or "winning"? I'd like to think not, but judging from the strong contingents of college coaches I saw watching the Stillwater-EP game, I could be very wrong. One could assume there are no mysteries on those teams, so I may be way off base in terms of how players are "found". Is it now the prevailing wisdom that small-town Suzy looks better playing next to superstar Sally than if Suzy stayed home and tried to make her own team better?

GHS, while it's true that a stay-at-home D will be missed in the regular season just about anywhere, she can vastly increase her odds of being noticed by participating in off-season camps, teams and tournaments. Shutting down an all-star line of AAA players is bound to get you noticed. Video tape and active promotion by their HS coach can really help a player get those opportunities. Won't always work, but with the sheer number of events and teams now, an elite D shouldn't slip through the cracks anymore.

Re: Transfers = Championships
I agree with much of what you have said. Some would argue that AAA participation - which is highly expensive and political - shouldn't be necissary to procure needed opportunities to get seen. I agree, and I think that this is where the MGHCA (coaches assn) programs and NDP come in.

I also believe that we could see an extension of AAA like hockey into B&A leagues that are fairly chosen based on programs such as NDP and with the guidance and backing of the coaches assn (MGHCA) USA/MN Hockey, etc. Once we see this happen, I think that we can start to say that we have the boys equivalent to the elite League as it will be more independent of politics than AAA hockey and also likely more economical. Once this is in place, it will diminish the need to transfer. Until then it may be fair to say that all elite/training/otherwise opportunities give rise to consideration and discussion of transfer however.

An interesting thought crossed my mind about a small-town top player going to a big school top HS program to get seen. It can backfire as has been said, and we need to keep in mind that if you sit the bench for a top HS team you are no more likely to get seen that you are if you are a top player in a worse program... It's an interesting dilemma that you need to really consider before you transfer!

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ckeyfan at: 3/2/06 12:24 pm

As controversial as it is, I think there are times when it makes sense for a student to transfer. If a high school program gets so dysfunctional that it is not providing anything of value to the students and the school administration refuses to make any changes to remedy the problems- then I applaud the student that will take a risk, move onto another school and try to make a better team without any guarantees. It is not always the kid trying to make a name for themselves- sometimes it is a kid just trying to have a halfway decent season instead of having to live through another dismal season.

There are always good reasons to transfer. I know this for a fact firsthand.

I agree. Bureaucracies do not fix themselves because there is a problem- they fix themselves because there are no options left and the students leave and there is no choice other than to remedy the situation.
