The Multi Sport Female Athlete

Post by boblee »

Which girls can do it all in more than one sport. I know one for sure. Greenway sophomore Emily Erickson. She is a star on the ice for the Grand Rapids/Greenway Lightning and she is a star shortstop for the Greenway Raiders fastpitch team. Molly Arola, freshman at Greenway is much in the same boat. Molly, however, plays second base. Which other girls do it all?
Grand Rapids-2006 State Runner Up

Don't forget Emily's skills on the tennis court either, the Greenway girls team did make it to state this year, and she was one of their top performers!

Emily is great on the tennis court, but don't kid yourself, she wasn't the biggest supporting actor. I'm not saying you thought that, however. Toni Troumbly and Sarah Peterson played HUGE roles in that team getting as far as they did, as did Emily Erickson.
Grand Rapids-2006 State Runner Up

Pimps?

What's up with you guys?
Are you that bored that you need to pimp these kids to death so one day when they "make it", you can say, "I know those kids."
Does anybody work anymore?

"Oooh!, I know so and so. She's better than any one else I can think off. That makes me cool cuz I know her and now everyone else will want to hang with me and get my opinion."

Are you all bored and without "real" lives?

FWIW - my primary goal is to see this site as a positive one vs. negative. That's why I spend "some" time here. What I can't stand is people bashing kids, and so that makes my valuable time worth "policing" this to some degree. I guess, better that people are claiming they know/respect the accomplishments of these kids vs. bashing them out of jealousy, bias, etc. (seen too much of this before).

80% of the workforce is said to surf the web while on the job. I spend the majority of my day on a computer, in a lab, programming, etc. - readily accessible is the internet & this website, my email, etc. It's not uncommon for me to test automated test systems code, and have downtime during which I have to police its results, but also can multi-task...

Hence my approx. 5000 posts & counting...

Actually - you gave me a good chance to clarify my thoughts of this board and its purpose in my mind. This can be a valuable tool to get info./ideas/opinions out. The issue is that all of that is complicated in that we are talking about something that involved minors - some as young as 12 or so. When I first started reading this forum a few years back, I thought that most of the content was speculation, some bashing, not much concrete info., etc. In this respect, I felt that it was negative in some ways. What it has evolved into is a place to get some clarification I think, praise the good, float ideas, but hopefully not let too much bashing of minors go on. I think it's one thing to justifiably (with facts - not speculation) attack a coach, program, administration, league, conference, or whatever, but another totally to go after a kid - especially when you can hide behind a screen name and say whatever the heck you want. Some will call this free speech, but I say if you really believe in what you say and can back up your thoughts and not just fight/attack/bash to fight/attack/bash then go for it and release your identity. I personally believe that anyone anonymously should be able to compliment, but no one should be able to question/bash without revealing their identity so they have to stand behind their words. I often get criticized for being a coach and openly posting on here, but to be honest if I didn't I think it would be a hell of a lot worse than maybe those that question me in the first place realize! Actually, we now have a number of coaches posting on here and/or reading this - and many of those coaches are far more accomplished that I am. I believe that this is positive for the sport in many ways.

As to if a Athena could be someone other than a hockey player, of course, but I still believe that the skating component of hockey makes it one of the sports that you really have to be talented/athletic/dedicated to do well at, and so the best hockey players are usually the best all around athletes in my mind. Anyone can pick up a sport that doesn't require all that hockey does, and this leads me to believe though that we may also be missing many of the best hockey players for we lose them to other sports due to the elitist nature of the sport of hockey...

Seems a HUGE soccer/hockey group in G Hockey... Not sure what this is the result of, maybe all the hockey coaches went out to the soccer fields to recruit little girls years ago - or the similarities in the sports is big, etc.???

Anna Bjorlin from Hermantown is amazing. She is Duluth News Tribune player of the year in three sports, however, none of which are hockey.
Grand Rapids-2006 State Runner Up

Seeing a lot of the hockey girls making the move to lacrosse too; a natural fit. Wish we would have had that sport when I was younger, it looks like a blast.

There are many amazing soccer/hockey tandem girls out there playing at Olympic Development levels in both sports. The only negative is it makes it tough to play anything else or even have a couple weeks off from athletics when you're playing at that level. With the basically year-'round AAA hockey and premier soccer club teams, I know many who are being pressured to choose one sport on which to concentrate, and that's just wrong. Soccer and hockey complement each other and coaches from both sports should know and appreciate that.

The soccer is getting almost - if not more so - elitist, crazy, and expensive as hockey I see. Amazing.

I've been asked about which sport a kid is more likely to get an athletic scholarship for, and of course I am in no position to answer this question as I'm not a soccer expert, etc. There are also a ton of myths about college schoalrships for athletics, etc. in all sports in general.

While it woudl seem logical in some respects that a hockey player from MN woudl be more likely to get a hockey scholarship than a soccer player from MN to get a soccer scholarship, I think that is somewhat incorrect. Just as there are a ton of So. US kids that play Soccer year round, so too are there a ton of Canadian kids that play Hockey year round. All compete for scholarships, so maybe it's a wash in the end...

I hear we have some "nationally ranked" soccer players in MN that have been so since they were 12-13 years old. At least one of these gals is also a hockey player, and a top one too.

One person I can't believe hasn't been on this board yet is Michelle Maunu! Talk about an athlete. Soccer, Football, Hockey, and Golf. Not to mention she's been to state in all of them and made quite the showing for herself.

Multi- sport athletes

Post by hcky23 »

In my opinion, the best hockey players and athletes in general are in more than one sport. You are physically fit all around rather than in one area. Hockey doesnt cover all muscle groups but other sports do.
Albert Lea- Jenna Christensen (Varsity) Hockey and Soccer
Kelli Hanson (Varsity) Hockey, Tennis, and Golf

I think in smaller town multi-sport athletes are more common. In the metro this is what makes them so unique - in that you have many 1-sport "specialists" in kids now as many need to be to be able to compete for a spot just in one sport in a huge school with many resources. So when you see a multi-sport athlete at the EP's BV's etc. that says a lot in those big schools. I think my point was that when you see the multi-sport athletes in the metro, many tend to be hockey - but there are many VB/BB, BB/FP etc. too etc.
