How about the MGHCA Freshman/Sophomore camp? There's probably a lot of names, but are the participants names posted anywhere?

don't believe I've ever seen that list posted before, but maybe that will change? This might be something philosophically too that isn't in agreement with the event's mission? Publicizing the participants?

Many kids had to choose. These should be coordinated in the future to at least not conflivt, but better yet to maybe work together?

camps

Post by SEhockeyDAD »

I think its okay to have to choose one or the other. For one thing, the expense of both camps would be daunting. Perhaps a better reason is that the opportunity is available to more girls if some girls don't do both camps.

One thing that makes choosing difficult is the time it took for MGHCA to select girls after tryouts. The Mankato camp was wanting an answer before the Fr./So. camp invites were decided. I know that the MGHCA evaluators don't want to make any mistakes by rushing things, but couldn't results be tabulated a day or two after the last tryout? Also, with coorination, both camps could have the same deadline. Then a family wouldn't feel pressured into making a decision on one while waiting for the other's invitation.

I believe for many of the above reasons that collaboration is better. While I like the notion of more opportunity, it may also ultimately dilute the talent at the camp(s). Also, both camps appear to be geared towards the exact same group. That being said, competition for the same players hurts re: what they are actually are trying to accomplish (in my opinion).

In my mind, it would be best to have the two groups work together.

I have seen far too many things like this before. Fortunately, in this case, both groups are non-profit and have the right goals in mind - and it's all about the kids. Other times, we have groups fighting over the same kids for all the wrong reasons.

Competition is good for the opportunities it creates, but my fear is that this hurts both very valuable programs and that we are seeing duplication where maybe money saved from combining could be used to offer other programs that aren't currently due to duplication with this group.

The good news is that quite a few Mankato players fall in the 8th grade slot and don't compete w/Fr.soph. late '91's. Depending on the school dist. & birth dates, the 91's can fall between 8th through Soph.

The 91 8ths have it best. They go to Mankato this year, and Fr/So the next two years - which is great I think, but it doesn't work that way for everyone, and they have to choose - which isn't right as then I think you will see kids afraid of what their choices will do re: future NDP/MN/USA H events & Jr Fest/Sr Classic/All-State/etc. MGHCA events.

The truth is that no kid will be retaliated aginast for choosing one program over the other, but some are covering their bases by doing one one year and the next the other, etc. What I think is happening is that the Fr/So is losing a lot of Fr to Mankato, but now that I think about this maybe the Fr/So was done this way by design to be an option for kids that are like the 91/8th graders that go to Mankato in 8th, then hit Fr/So for both Fr/So years (otherwise they would be w/out an option for Fr year if it was just a So camp???)

The solution would be to just do grade camps - 8th/Fr/So., but that likely doesn't fit with the way MN/USA H does things as they are by birthyear, HS hockey by grade.... Else you could just do birthyear camps by MN/USA H for the groups they already do - and then have the MGHCA continue that on to the groups above (as they pretty much already do) - but divide it by birthyear vs. grade so that there is no duplication of offerings or kids being forced to choose, dilution of talent, etc.

Mankato camp

Post by notanexpert12 »

My daughter was fortunate to have attended this camp.

My observations:

I saw an lot of terrific skaters. The passing was perhaps the most impressive part. Amazing what happens when there are a lot of kids who can see the rink.

Great coaching. The head coaches had great rapport and the counselors were both knowledgeable and positive people.

Based on my daughter comments, the great majority of these girls are multi-sport athletes. Lots of softball, volleyball, soccer and swimming shirts. Most of them love each of these sports and fortunately are not obsessed with only one.

My daughter had a great experience and watching her briefly, she refined her skills!

Couldn't say enough good about the camp.

"Hats Off" to Coach Vizenor & Larry Moralis(sp) very professional camp. The girls were busy from sun up to sun down. Talking to some of the girls they couldn't believe the camp went so fast, at the same time they were pretty wiped out...Excellent class room, on off ice instruction, small teams, games, team building. I'm not a big advocate for "Week Long" camps, but should your daughter get selected in the future, I would highly recomend this camp. Hopefully MGCHA and this camp can work out the timing, by seeing most of the names, it looked as though many of the top 91's choose Mankato.

Whit Graft, Krisina Bunker were awsome!

I wonder how many decided to do MGHCA Fr/So camp instead, as I think there was a direct conflict - AND - some may have decided to NOT do either as I think 90/91's went out to NY too around this time?

I'm not sure if the MGHCA publishes this info.?

Also - I suppose we could find the 91's from P3 NDP - Romatoski comes to mind immediately, others?

I guess I was thinking of the 90's when they had the 15 camp (was that its first year maybe?) when I think they had to leave right from the 90 camp for NY or vice versa although I may be wrong...

Also, I was wondering if anyone knew of any girls that didn't get selected for P1 but went to Mankato last year and made P2 this year. I know that this is true of Rachel Vath. Vath was not selected for NDP last year but went to Mankato and this year is a P2 at the 91 level.

It was for 91's last year and 90's two years ago. It would make more sense to do stuff by grade I think as then this wouldn't compete with the Fr/So camp.
