Probably will change a bit after HS tryouts. Thought EP was going to have two A teams.

There are a lot of new teams this year!
Is this about twice the number of teams as last year? Just scanning in D8 and D6 I see Mahtomedi, Prior Lake/Burnsville, AV, Farmington, Rosemount, Sibley, Faribault, plus a second Lakeville.
What does this mean?

How many of these had only B teams in the past, but now are either moving up to A or have both A and B?

Up here int he Northland it is quite the opposite. I think there are some 14UB teams in the Duluth and Iron Range area. Many programs are choosing to go the JV route instead of 14U.

I have seen some very good programs make that decision, only to become average at best programs in the time it takes that first group to make the jump go from 12U to Seniors.

Don't some northern teams play both JV and 14UA in order to get in enough games?

Minnesota Hockey only allows 14U teams to play 5 JV games. Scrimmages count against that total and the games count toward the 40 games a 14U team is allowed.

All games must be approved by Minnesota hockey prior to the game being scheduled.

Where do you find a 40 game limit for 14U? The MN Hockey handbook limits squirts (10U) to 35 games in section VII.G.2. There is a section pertaining to mites but nothing for PW, 12U, BT, or 14U. Can anyone point me to a section that addresses 14U or BT game counts?

Is this a limitation from your District or your local association?

JV scrimmages are approved by MN Hockey's Registrar, Carol Carlson. This year they will want copies of the high school's proof of insurance.

Bantam and 14U is capped at 40 games.

I didn't see it either but that is what I was told from our district coordinator, bantam coach, and girls' coaching coordinator. That total does not include district, region, or state tournament games.

The insurance thing is true and has been a pain the butt.

That 40 game cap is not very restrictive given it doesn't include district or playoff games. The only way a BT team goes over that woiuld be to do the VFW tournament after reaching the state tournament. It is a 55-65 game season cap with districts and regions included....thats a full calendar.

From what I read in the MN hockey handbook there is NO cap on games after the Squirt Level.

Your 40 game cap may be an association or district limit.

That is possible I suppose. I guess when I was told about the 40 games, it sounded like a minnesota hockey thing. I will try to find out what it is.

I do know that 14U teams are only allowed 5 games vs JV teams. Ms. Carlson was very clear that additional games would not be approved. The JV team must send in their insurance info. along with game date, time, and location.

I did some checking. The 40 game rule is an association rule under a state league suggestion from a few (or more) years back. Sorry about the wrong info. on that.

The 14U vs JV info. is correct.

Last year there were 40 teams total (+ 1 WI team) playing 14UA. So there appears to be a net increase of 10 teams this year, although this is based on preliminary team declarations and it sounds like some of these teams did not materialize so the net increase is probably 7 teams or less.

One noticeable omission this year is White Bear Lake (playing 14UB only).

I have it from a reliable source that Elk River will not field a 14U team this year. Anybody else know anything about that?

The schedules have been posted on the District 10 web site. The 14A schedule has Elk River scheduled.

I certainly couldn't find a scheduled game for Elk River vs. anybody in the schedule.

Andover lost a lot girls to the high school, so they will not field a 14 team. Those players still needing a team were spread out to different associations in District 10.

I stand corrected Elk River was there on the 10th and I double checked today and they are not.

Twenty 8th and 9th graders on Hopkins varsity and JV if you're wondering where their 14U team went.

Only 12 players grades 10-12, on both teams, so they seem in the midst of a recruiting dip.
