Congrats - "Age Up" Day

Post by jg2112 » Wed Jul 01, 2015 10:08 am

Congratulations to all the girls who move up in age classification today. My daughter is now officially a Pee Wee / U12 according to MN Hockey age rules.

Odd post. There isn't any MH sanctioned 10U/squirt or 12U/peewee hockey being played right now, to my knowledge. Like everyone else in the state that 'ages up', they really age out of the former age group in Feb or Mar when the season ends and age in to the new age group in Sep or Oct when the season begins. But their birthdates haven't changed, so they really are in no different status today than they were yesterday. Swimming works that way, though - if you were 10 last weekend you swam 9 & 10; if your 11th birthday is today, you will swim 11 & 12 this weekend.

But outside of association (AAA, before and afters, most summer tourneys) it's all about January 1. Kids that are born 1/1 would be same team as any through 12/31 that birth year (although there are teams that always play up or even play different age brackets at different events.) Unlike some sports, you have to play at the level of your oldest member, not by age average.

Now it makes sense, The machine orange 02 finally gets to play up according to the rules. So now we know why they are playing U-14 in the international cup u-16 in the OS shoot out.

Does that mean they can still play at 12's and still dominate?

The U12 bracket for summer AAA is 2002 birth years and younger. The 02 Machine can stay in U12 if they wish. It's good that they aren't - they'd be wasting their time if they did.

My comment was to recognize that MN Hockey's age up day is July 1. Nothing more.

So they wasted their time all spring? I heard they had to leave the state to get competition worthy of their ability.

My opinion? Yes, they did. My daughter's team played them in the Meltdown and it wasn't a game worth playing. 10-0 and they took their foot off the pedal. It was 5-0 after one and I think the shot disparity was 55-3 or something similarly ridiculous.

Their pooled approach to training and tournament play (very similar to youth soccer) works well.

Will be interesting to see how they do in the OS shootout playing u-16 I think they play the 01 OS team first.

I don't think there is much let up on the pedal. In the 3rd period of a 10-0 game, those girls are trying out for a spot at the next tourney. They may be instructed not to shoot as often, but there isn't any coasting.

Yeah, I agree with you. I didn't mean to imply they coasted. They played more system hockey at that point, but they were still swarming and controlling the puck.

Ultimately, that game might have benefited my daughter more than their team. Their intensity and skill motivated her to get going on her summer training.

Again it will be interesting to see coming up at the shootout. Their weakness has been goaltending and reacting to pressure. They went out and got a girl from Chicago to play goal for them in Canada and NY. When they are in close games they tend to play too much as individuals. In the Championship game in Europe this was really evident as they wouldn't pass to any non machine kids and it cost them the game.

they played at u-12 level and won the tourney's they were in by a large margin. Lost in new york will be interesting to see when they move up. The blades 02 have been playing 14's and so have the Ice cougars and 01/02 OS team all 7th graders which could have played at the 12 level. the 01/02. Os team have won the u14 tournaments they have played in pretty easy....

The 02 Machine is a really nice team. In my opinion they play a great style of hockey that is rarely played at such a young age.

One of my biggest beef's with most of the PW, U12, and summer hockey played on the girls side is shift management and the intensity of the shifts. Machine is VERY good at it. 30 seconds of intensity. Lots of pressure defensively and puck movement on offense creates a lot of scoring chances. Late in periods and games the 4 lines of F and 3 lines of D are still fresh while the #1 line on the other team are tired from longer shifts and the 2nd/3rd lines are both tired and overmatched. That = blowout victories + not adding to the lead of 8+ goals in the 3rd.

Regarding the supposed upcoming matchup between the 01 Os Select team vs the 02 Machine I predict a solid 3-5 goal victory by the 01's. I believe the 02's will not score more than 2 goals. If the 02's could use the Hot Tub Time Machine and play them at the same age I think that it would be a nail biter that the Os team would win due to their Goalie who is super solid.

I believe the majority (if not all but a 1-3) of the 01's are going into 9th grade this year and I believe that a lot of the 02's are going into 8th grade. The team that has more incoming 8th grade 01's might be the Ice Cougars. Both Os and Machine are deeper and play a shorter shifting, intensity based hockey that eventually overwhelms the Cougars. An interesting matchup that I do not believe has happened yet is the 01/02 Os team and the Cougars. I believe that would be a game full of kids going into 8th grade next year.

Might happen at the OS Shootout or the Caribou Cup...

The 02 players from the 01/02 team could play U12 but the 01 players from the 01/02 have to play U14

U12= 02 and 03
U14= 01 and 00

The O2 Machine and 01/02 OS team are all the same MN hockey age but are not the same AAA ages.

MN hockey age has ZERO to due with AAA age. AAA is 100% birth year driven and second year 12 has nothing to do with it.

The 2002 kids can play U12 (AAA)
The 2001 kids can NOT play U12 (AAA)

They are the same MN hockey age but different AAA ages based on birth year

They reason the O2 Machine can play down is because they are ALL 2002. If they had 5 2001 kids, then those 5 can NOT play down.
