Crazy all the high powered scorers and how hard it it to put the puck in the net with such good D and goalies. Looking at the 02's and 01's seeing so many goal scorers with 0, 1 or 2 goals that are used to scoring every game. Just shows how good the competition is and just how difficult it is to bury the puck when there are 10 good players on the ice and top end goal tending. There are kids that put up huge numbers at varsity as young pups that still didn't light the lamp much. Pretty cool to see how deep the talent is.

With that being said.... the competition this weekend at Braemar was so slow and watered down that it looked like they were standing still compared to walking to the other side of the building and watching the kids one year older. The 00's played 10 times faster and it was a much much better game. Granted, they are at the top 54, but it was literally night and day between the two age groups.

Top 54 (vs 200) and a year older. Cutting the bottom 150 kids would make a difference, not hard to figure that one out. The 17's looked even faster.

What are the characteristics of the kids who played 12s that stood out to you?

1. trying to do to much alone.
2. decision making
3. Strength
4. patience
these were the characteristics I saw mainly with the d2 team as I saw them the most.
Every team there could skate.
d2 had too many girls that play hockey instead of hockey players who are girls.

Looking at that roster, and knowing that group, I'm not surprised you saw that. Some of those girls have had to shoulder the load for lesser-talented association teams for years, and haven't had the "I have to do all it myself" trait coached out of them yet.

D2 did not shoot the puck enough. Best players did not tryout.

15's/16's/17's & other...

Post by massalsa » Mon Apr 25, 2016 1:11 pm

I was at Braemar to see games this weekend. I saw a lot of different teams at 15's and also a couple of 54 games for both 16 & 17 and also a couple of periods that had the MN girls just mopping up the competition in the NIT or whatever that other tourney was called.

Thoughts at 15's:

1. D2 had 6 really good D's (5 played Varsity girls last year and the one that did not was great as well). Forest Lake looks to be solid for years to come as there were yellow helmets and maroon breezers on the ice at all times. Behind their D was the #1 goalie from a top 10 Varsity team in the state. The goalie tandem only gave up 3 goals in 4 games. They scored 22 goals over the weekend (had 10 in 1 game)...

2. Its too bad D2/D6/D10 did not play each other. That Moundsview goalie from D10 was impressive in the game I saw her play.

3. D6 had some serious firepower up front and 3 or 4 REALLY good D.

4. D3 had a really nice group of forwards as well and 1 line that probably was the best line I saw in the tourney.

5. How is there only 1 2001 Goalie in a district with Wayzata, OMG, Orono, Delano, Minneapolis, Hopkins/Park, and Armstrong/Cooper?

6. D3 had 47 shots against D10 Friday. D2 had 65 shots against D16 on Sunday.

Lots of other thoughts but too random to try to organize...lots of great players that will be fun to watch for years to come in this great hockey state!!!

Thoughts about 16's/17's:

1. Its expected with the top 54 of each age and being 1 or 2 birth years older but those games were very fast and the girls very skilled.

2. Hengler from EP is so fun to watch play D. Never looks like she needs to elevate her HR more than 10 beats and makes every play look effortless.

3. Every goalie I saw was really good.

4. The way the 16's/17's shoot/pass/catch the puck compared to the 01's...

The NIT tourney:

1. The poor Michigan team. Outscored in 4 games 50-1 (scored in 3rd period of last game). Outshot 71-5, 59-6, 83-3, 68-8. Their #1 goalie gave up 33 goals for the weekend and still had an .851 save %.

Great notes, much appreciated

I see Breza made it without going through the Spring Festival.

She completely deserves it, and I understand why she wasn't there.

Agree. She could probably (and still might) make what was called U18 Select or Select 66 camp last year. The camp from which the majority of the U18 National team is selected.

Great insight on the 2001's!! And a big thank you for the D2 Defense compliment.....I will forward it on to a friend of mines daughter who was one of them.... I understand that all 6 D from D2 made it to the St Cloud phase 4.

I was really disappointed that D6 and D2 didn't get a chance to play each other....would have been a good match up. I also felt bad for D16 who was given several players who were cut from other districts. No offense to those players, but would have liked to have seen a better representation from the northern communities...I find it hard to believe that they couldn't come up with 20 kids from up north. Oh well....

Catch 22. Not many players selected for last year's state camp, means not many players try out this year, which results in not very many players being selected for this year's state camp, which will likely mean not many players will try out next year...I think you see where this is going.

I wonder what will change about St. Cloud now that there are more kids there.

Not sure what you mean. I don't think the stoplights could possibly take any longer to change, if that's where you were headed.

I meant with the added numbers headed to St. Cloud. Will the whole process change?

What added numbers? For at least the last 6 years going back to 2010, MN Hockey has sent 102 players to St. Cloud for the HP-15 Summer Festival. They did the same this year. Unless I'm missing something, I counted 102 again this year.

Just to be clear...there are no changes to the stoplights?

No problem. From the 102, they'll select a few dozen to attend the National HP-15 camp. If you're wondering how many move on to attend the National camp from past year, here's the player counts:
2015: National camp was expanded (doubled in size) with 191 players and 24 goalies from across the US. Initially MN had 38 with 9 alternates. 2 original picks could not play, and all but 1 alternate ended up getting moved up to play. So MN ended up having 44 players participate.
2014: National camp only had 90 total players and 12 goalies. Initially MN had 20 players with 12 alternates. 5 alternates moved up to play for a total of 25 (14 F, 10 D, 1 G).
2013: Again, 90 total players and 12 goalies attended the camp. 13 players from MN with 3 "at large" picks and 17 alternates. 19 ended up playing (9F, 8D, 2G), which included the "at large" players and a few alternates.
Side Note: 14 of our 16 Minnesotans on the U18 Team USA that won world's this past January were apart of the above player counts (six 1998's, six 1999's, two 2000's).
