Class A Rankings Week #10 (1/29/2023)

Hockey Day Minnesota has now come and gone and that usually signals that the playoffs are near. In Class A there were a bunch of chaotic scores to make sense of this week. The Top 5 are solid and have separated from the rest. I tried to go by resume as we have played ten weeks of games and I tried to slot teams of their full body of work with justifications below.

1- Warroad (8A) (18-0-0)
Past Week Results: W 5-2 Roseau, W 4-2 Moorhead
Upcoming Schedule: 1/31 vs Bemidji, 2/3 vs #20 Thief River Falls, 2/4 vs Grand Forks Central
Another great week for the Warriors who went into Roseau to start their week and picked up the big season sweep over their rivals. Mr. Hockey favorite Shaugabay led the way with 2 goals on the night and Warroad picked up big bragging rights for the remainder of the year up North. They then went over to AA Moorhead and took down the Spuds and stayed unbeaten on the year, however the injury severity of Pilgrim could be devastating news. This week they host three games vs 8AA Bemidji and then a Section 8A game vs Thief River Falls before finally welcoming Grand Forks Central to town from across the border as the Warriors continue to pursue perfection.

2- Hermantown (7A) (15-2-1)
Past Week Results: W 10-0 Superior, W 7-0 Proctor, W 6-3 #3 Mahtomedi
Upcoming Schedule: 2/1 vs #4 Orono, 2/2 vs Cloquet, 2/4 vs Totino Grace
The Hawks started their busy week by routing the team right across the border when they beat Superior by double digits. They followed that with another shutout win when they beat up on 7A neighbor Proctor in the middle part of their week. Hermantown finished the week by winning a big State seeding game over Mahtomedi when they won the Hockey Day Minnesota contest in an entertaining game. Now they can lock up the 2 seed at state with a big match up with highly ranked Orono this week.

3- Mahtomedi (4A) (11-6-0)
Past Week Results: L 2-4 Hill Murray, L 3-6 #2 Hermantown
Upcoming Schedule: 1/30 @ Hill Murray, 2/2 vs St Thomas Academy, 2/4 vs Simley
The Zephyrs dug themselves a big 3-0 hole vs Hill Murray at home to start their week and while they were able to cut the deficit to one the Pioneers were able to put the game away in the third period. The loss while not a bad one does sting a little more than normal due to this Pioneer team not being nearly as strong as normal. They finished the week dropping a back and forth contest with a good Hermantown team in a game we hope to see a rematch of at State. This week the schedule doesn't get any easier with a rematch with AA Hill Murray and St Thomas Academy to start the week before a winnable game vs 4A Simley at the end of the week.

4- Orono (2A) (16-2-0)
Past Week Results: W 3-2 #17 New Prague, W 3-2 Waconia
Upcoming Schedule: 1/31 vs St Louis Park, 2/1 vs #2 Hermantown, 2/2 @ St. Louis Park
The Spartans had another week of close calls. In the first game vs New Prague they trailed after 1 period but to their credit another good 2nd period gave them the lead and they won another tight hockey game. The Spartans then won another 3-2 game over Waconia to end their week. In what is a familiar pattern they fell behind after 1 period for the 8th straight game and used a good 2nd period to pull ahead and held on to win. This week they will get an opportunity to move up the rankings when they take on #2 Hermantown as well as two games with AA St Louis Park.

5- East Grand Forks (8A) (12-6-0)
Past Week Results: W 6-1 Greenway
Upcoming Schedule: 1/31 vs Moorehead, 2/2 @ Grand Forks Central
The Greenwave took care of business in the only game of the week as they beat Greenway on the road to continue their streak of good play of late and win their 7th game in a row. Now this week they have two good challenges on their schedule when they take on a good AA Moorhead team and then face off against border rival Grand Forks Central to end the week. With the Warroad back to back series looming every game EGF plays is working on building to that as they have been very impressive in the 2nd half of the season this winter.

6- Northfield (1A) (15-4-0)
Past Week Results: W 8-3 Mankato East, W 3-0 Albert Lea, W 3-0 Rochester Mayo
Upcoming Schedule: 2/2 vs Rochester John Marshall, 2/4 @ Owatonna
The Raiders started their week off fast when they took it to Mankato East and put 8 goals on the road to pick up the Big Nine Conference victory. The Raiders then locked up the #1 seed in Section 1A when they shut out Albert Lea on the road in the middle of their week. Northfield finished the week by avenging their loss to Rochester Mayo from the week prior by winning a good hockey game at home. The Raiders sit comfortably at six in the rankings and have resume wins over Delano, Albert Lea, New Prague and Monticello and no real bad Class A losses. This week two more AA Big Nine Conference games they should be favored to win when they take on Rochester John Marshall and Owatonna.

7- Delano (2A) (10-8-0)
Past Week Results: W 4-2 Litchfield Dassel Cokato, L 2-3 Holy Family
Upcoming Schedule: 1/31 vs Hutchinson, 2/2 vs Holy Family, 2/4 vs #16 Minneapolis
Delano got their week started off on the right foot when they went on the road and picked up the big season sweep of Section 2A Litchfield Dassel Cokato. However, the Tigers were unable to overcome their Holy Family Curse as the Fire continued what seems like decades long domination over Delano and beat them in a tight 2-3 game. The Tigers resume is simple, they play a tougher schedule than anyone below them and only own losses to 5 of the top 6 teams in Class A or AA opponents. No one else in Class A has beat them. They have wins over SCC, Hibbing and a sweep of LDC right now and still have some important games left but based on their resume they are a solid 7 in the Class A rankings compared to the rest of the field. This week Delano will get a chance for revenge vs the Fire but the Section 2A games are more important with the finale of the week vs 2A defending champion Minneapolis looking like a great game.

8- Detroit Lakes (8A) (13-4-1)
Past Week Results: W 3-2 OT Northern Lakes, W 6-2 Lake of the Woods
Upcoming Schedule: 1/31 vs Breckenridge/Wahpeton, 2/4 @ Brainerd
The Lakers found themselves in a surprising Mid State Conference battle with Northern Lakes to begin the week as they needed overtime to pull out the win. They then won their 4th game in a row to finish out the week picking up a Section 8A win over Lake of the Woods. To Detroit Lakes credit they are winning the games they should currently. The resume of the Lakers is the biggest questionable one of the current Top 10. They don't own any big wins beyond a split with Fergus Falls but they don't have any terrible losses either. I will put them here for now as next week they do have one of the few question mark games left where they are not the heavy favorite to win when they take on Brainerd on the road at the end of the week to give them a test as they enter February.

9- Hibbing (7A) (13-6-1)
Past Week Results: W4-0 Duluth Marshall, L 1-2 Superior, W 4-2 #20 Thief River Falls
Upcoming Schedule: 1/31 @ International Falls, 2/3 @ North Shore
Hibbing started off their busy week by shutting out a struggling Duluth Marshall team at home. However, the road loss to Superior did sound off some alarm bells on this team for some of the doubters who exist on this team. They did rebound strongly with a good win over Thief River Falls, a team that tied Detroit Lakes, and the Bluejackets ended the week on a winning note. Overall Hibbing owns wins over Rock Ridge, MPLS and TRF, two of which beat a team like Cathedral just outside the Top 10, and tied with Denfeld they have a solid schedule and they right now resume wise are still a Top 10 Class A team. This week they have two Section 7A games they should win as they look to lock up the #2 seed.

10- Rock Ridge (7A) (12-5-1)
Past Week Results: 3-4 OT Cloquet, W 6-1#13 Duluth Denfeld
Upcoming Schedule: 2/3 @ Brainerd, 2/4 @ Sartell
The Wolverines lost a heartbreaker in overtime to start their week in a game they battled back to tie up and they held the advantage in overtime but they missed two golden chances to score and right after that CEC went down and put the game on ice. Rock Ridge did rebound though to dominate 7A Duluth Denfeld at home and pick up a critical 7A second win and that should assure them a higher seed then the Hunters come playoffs. Rock Ridge now owns wins over MPLS, SCC, Providence Academy and a split with Denfeld and tie with Little Falls slots them in right around the 10th spot in these rankings. This week they hit the road to take on two 8AA teams when they head to Brianerd and Sartell both should present good tests for the Wolverines.

11-St Cloud Cathedral (5A) (11-7-0)
Past Week Results: W 7-1 Northern Lakes, W 8-0 Mora, W 7-0 Rochester Lourdes
Upcoming Schedule: 1/31 @ Totino Grace, 2/2 @ #15 Little Falls, 2/4 @ #12 Providence Academy
The Crusaders cruised in their 3 games this week demolishing all three teams they faced and now have won 9 of their last 11 games, with the two losses being tight games to Hermantown and Orono, and are playing good hockey late in the year. They have shown more goal scoring prowess of late, something that was desperately missing early in the year. The resume puts them at around 11 they have losses to teams like Delano, Rock Ridge and TRF but have been hot of late but don't have that marquee win to justify Top 10. This week now we will see how improved they are as they have three tough road games with AA Totino Grace then 5A rival Little Falls and an offensively gifted and suddenly hot Providence Academy team. By this time next week we will know how for real this Crusader group is after 3 tough road games.

12- Providence Academy (2A) (10-8-0)
Past Week Results: W 8-4 Blake, W 4-3 OT Northern Lakes
Upcoming Schedule: 1/31 @ Breck, 2/2 vs St. Paul Academy, 2/4 vs #11 St Cloud Cathedral
The Lions picked up their most impressive win of the season when they knocked off a solid AA Blake team to start their good week. They finished the week then by sneaking by Northern Lakes in overtime on the road and suddenly this Providence team has won 3 games in a row. The Lions resume and 2A win over MPLS has them sitting at a 3 seed in Section 2A and also have losses to Rock Ridge and that ugly Hutchinson game lingers, they do have Cathedral this week as they look to support their argument of being a Top 10 Class A team. This coming week a big rematch with 2A Breck and also a very intriguing matchup with a red hot St Cloud Cathedral at the end of the week looms.

13- Duluth Denfeld (7A) (10-10-1)
Past Week Results: L 1-6 #10 Rock Ridge, L 2-3 Superior
Upcoming Schedule: 1/31 vs Greenway, 2/3 @ Sartell, 2/4 @ Alexandria
The Hunters skid hit 5 straight games this week as they got rocked on the road by Rock Ridge to start their week and are now in big danger of being a 4 seed in Section 7A. They then got beat by Superior in a game where they scored twice late to make it close but again this team is struggling of late. Again the Hunters resume keeps them afloat for now as they still own wins over MPLS & Little Falls and a season split with Rock Ridge and tie with Hibbing to not drop off a cliff just yet. This week is a busy one for Denfeld as they have a must win 7A game vs Greenway before they hit the road to take on 8AA Sartell and then 6A Alexandria.

14- Fergus Falls (6A) (9-7-1)
Past Week Results: L 3-5 Sauk Rapids, L 2-5 Brainerd, W 3-2 Brainerd
Upcoming Schedule: 1/30 at Willmar, 1/31 vs Willmar, 2/4 vs Wadena Deer Creek
The Otters suffered a shocking loss on home ice when they got taken out by Sauk Rapids to start their week. They did rebound though to pick up a solid split with a decent AA Brainerd at the end of their week to stay above teams like Little Falls and TRF who they own wins over head to head on the resume and they do have split with Top 10 Detroit Lakes. This week they have three Section 6A games with a back to back vs Willmar and then an important game with 6A unbeaten Wadena Deer Creek. All three games are must wins for the Otters and games they should be favored to win as they try to set themselves up for a winner take the #1 seed game in a rematch with Alexandria the following week.

15- Little Falls (5A) (11-7-1)
Past Week Results: W 5-1 Cambridge-Isanti, W 8-0 Mound Westonka
Upcoming Schedule: 1/31 vs Alexandria, 2/2 vs #11 St Cloud Cloud Cathedral, 2/4 vs Northern Lakes
The Flyers.continued their impressive play of late as they picked up their 4th and 5th wins in a row this week. They won a very important Section 5A game on the road over Cambridge Isanti to start their week and they then took care of Mound Westonka to end the week. The Flyers have a resume with losses to Fergus Falls, WDC, Denfeld, Mahtomedi and Orono but they have wins over TRF, Monticello, Alexandria and tie with Rock Ridge have been playing good hockey in the last two weeks to give them a slight edge over MPLS for now. Little Falls have big games vs an improving Alexandria team and then a huge 5A showdown with section favorite St Cloud Cathedral before they wrap up the week with a struggling Northern Lakes program.

16- Minneapolis (2A) (10-6-2)
Past Week Results: W 3-0 Holy Angels, T 2-2 Breck
Upcoming Schedule: 1/31 vs St Paul Highland Park, 2/4 vs #7 Delano
The boys from the 612 stayed hot this week and picked up one of their more impressive wins on the year when they knocked off AA Holy Angels who beat them over Christmas to show the growth of the group in the 2nd half. They then however had a slight setback back that prevented them from moving up further in the rankings when they went on the road and barely tied 2A Breck which is not impressive but they fought back to tie the game late on the road and maintain control of the 4 seed in a deep Section 2A. With resume losses head to head to Hibbing, Rock Ridge, Denfeld and Providence Academy and recent tie with Breck this spot in the ranking feels about right for now. This week they have a winnable game vs Highland Park before a huge Section 2A Championship rematch with Delano.

17- New Prague (1A) (10-6-1)
Past Week Results: L 2-3 #4 Orono, T 4-4 East Ridge
Upcoming Schedule: 1/31 vs Chanhassen, 2/4 @ Bloomington Jefferson
The Trojans lost a tight one goal game again to highly rated Orono and then tied AA East Ridge and nothing bad about those results but they will continue to tread along as they are playing the AA portion of the Metro West right now. Regardless of those results vs AA teams they will be battle tested come time for Section 1A playoffs. They will be the 2 or 3 seed in Section 1A and a tough out again just like last year. They do need to get a win against struggling Jefferson this week though as that loss is still an ugly blemish on an otherwise decent resume.

18- New Ulm (3A) (16-2-1)
Past Week Results: W 4-3 Windom, W 7-1 Fairmont, W 3-1 Luverne
Upcoming Schedule: 1/31 vs Rochester Lourdes, 2/3 @ Windom, 2/4 @ Mound Westonka
The Eagles started their week with Windom at home on Monday as they squeaked out 4-3 win and a game that the shots were close and the game was tied late into the third. They followed that up with a win over Fairmont on the road. Which set up the big showdown in Luverne. New Ulm was able to go in and pick up the big season series sweep and secure the #1 seed in Section 3A in the process. New Ulm is a mystery team when it comes to rankings they showed in a tie with Fergus and one goal loss to Detroit Lakes they can play but also have the SWC loss which is ugly. This week three more winnable games on the schedule the ones outside the Big South Conference will need to keep an eye on.

19- Two Rivers (4A) (15-4-1)
Past Week Results: L 1-3 Hastings, W 2-0 South St Paul
Upcoming Schedule: 2/2 @ Chisago Lakes
The Warriors dropped a tough road to start their week to AA Hastings. They did to their credit come back and pick up an important 2A sweep of South St Paul and they continue to build their resume for the #2 seed in 4A. This is my biggest stretch I know, but hey they are not in my Top 10 like the official coaches poll at least. The Warriors own 15 wins over no one really and have two horrid losses to Princeton and Mound Westonka and a very competitive one goal loss to Hill Murray. I will leave them here for one more week and we will find out a ton about this team this coming week as they have a huge road game at Chisago Lakes in what will likely be a preview of the Section 4A Semifinals.

20- Thief River Falls (8A) (9-10-1)
Past Week Results: W 9-2 Greenway, L 2-4 #8 Hibbing
Upcoming Schedule: 2/3 @ #1 Warroad
The Prowlers went on the road to the Iron Range to take on a pair of Section 7A teams and they got the weekend off to a quick start when they routed Greenway 9-2 on the Friday night of the road trip. They were however shell shocked by Hibbing the next day who scored 3 goals in the first half of the 1st period and never looked back and sent the Prowlers back below .500. Thief River Falls is such a hard team to rank their best result is a tie with Detroit Lakes and win over Cathedral which is nice but that was a long time ago. They own a bunch of losses to very good Class A and AA teams and have beaten only mid range 8A teams for the most part and have that oneI feel like it could be argued I am both way too high and too low by putting them at 20 but I will stick them here for now. This week they have just one game, a very tough matchup at #1 Warroad.

The Next 5 in Class A Week #10-
Litchfield Dassel/Cokato (2A) (13-5-2)-
The Dragons started the week by playing Delano tough but were ultimately swept in the season series. They did recover to slip past Mound Westonka for the crucial 2nd win and look to have a strong grip on the 5 seed in 2A. They got by Prairie Centre at the end of the week This week an important 2A rematch with Southwest Christian who they tied earlier this year as they look to try and secure the 5 seed.

Albert Lea (1A) (13-5-0)- Albert Lea was shut out at home in their big home match up with 1A favorite Northfield to start the week. They were able to come back and beat 1A Faribault to stay in the top 3 seeds of the section. This week they have a must win Section 1A game vs Winona and then take on Big Nine Conference opponent Mankato West in another game that they will be favored to win.

Alexandria (6A) (7-10-1)- Don't look now but preseason Class ATop 10 and defending 6A champion Alexandria appears to have found their identity as they have now won 5 games in a row and are (6-1-1) in their last 8 games. Two good games this week vs ranked Little Falls and Duluth Denfeld as Alexandria continue to try and claw back to .500 after starting the year (1-9-0).

Monticello (5A) (12-7-1)- The Moose started the week out fast winning their first 3 games. However, they did suffer a loss to a rising Alexandria team to end the week. Team is still playing very good hockey and they have just one game this week vs 5A Pine City. The Moose are (7-3-0) since the start of 2023 and will be a factor come sections and have secured themselves a top 3 seed.

Wadena Deer Creek (6A) (11-4-1)- The Wolverines picked up a 6A win and then played a wild affair with Kittson County Central that they had to battle back in to tie. This week is critical to their season; they have three 6A games. If they can beat Morris/Benson, Northern Lakes and Fergus Falls they will lock up the #1 seed if they lose more than a game they fall all the way to the 4 seed. We will see how big of a threat WDC is in 6A after this week.

Loren and I are on the same Track have the same 20 teams just a slight tweak in order. Only argument would be Delano over Hibbing as they won the head to head 6-3 when they played. Overall though almost identical and lines up well with PageStat

Now we wait for the official poll from the coaches....

There you go again, CAG. The Hibbing-Delano game was 3-3 until 2 minutes left, when Delano took their first lead of the game at 4-3 and then got two empty netters. This was not some 6-3 cruise to victory that clearly showed Delano was a superior team. I don't have a problem with Delano being ranked ahead or behind Hibbing, but at least give the reader the full story! 8)

In short Delano won the head to head over Hibbing on the road. Neither Delano or Hibbing have any other bad resume losses to Class A teams except ones that are ranked higher. Both play good opponents from A and AA they lost to which is nothing to be ashamed of there.

Due to no other outside bad losses in Class A and playing a similar strength in schedule due to the head to head win regardless of the score Delano should be slightly ranked ahead of Hibbing.

How's that Rainier and as I stated before I watched this one as I know you did from outsider perspective Delano was the better team and won. It was good game but as it wore on Delano really took command outshooting the Bluejackets 22-10 in the final two periods. Boyer for Hibbing as he has been all winter was outstanding in the net. Hibbing actually took the lead at home 3-2 with about 11 minutes to go in the third period normally for them that is when they lock it down, like in wins vs Rock RIdge and CEC, but to Delano's credit they responded and tied the game only a minute later and then controlled the remainder of the period on Hibbing's home ice and after waves of pressure broke the tie game late and added some ENGs. The game was one of Delanos top performances of the year. Both teams were playing the back end of the 3 straight Holiday game weekend but Delano was sleeping in hotel rooms and had gotten ambushed by Hermantown earlier in the week. Meanwhile Hibbing was able to go home each night sleep in thier own bed and came in riding a win streak.

All of the factors above to me add to the impressive win for Delano on the road and down in the third period to then take control and win to means that Hibbing, while I 100% think is Top 10, should be slightly below Delano... All I am saying is flip them around.

Does that work better for you rainer? Again, I like your team and your program is on the rise just in this scenario Delano should be ranked higher due to them playing and circumstances above and having watched and Delano just being a little better with puck possession and overall team speed.

Why so low on Rock Ridge elliott???
Beat MPLS 5-3 on 1/6
Beat Cathedral 6-3 on 12/17
They are (10-2-1) in last 13 games so its not like they were hot early or playing bad of late....

I personally don't agree with Maht at 5 at all either seeing as they beat EGF on the road 6-3 but I get you would argue that was early in the year and Greenwave are playing much better of late I can understand that logic and get that..

However, the Rock Ridge at 13 what gives? They are literally one of the hottest Class A teams in state and beat 2 of the 3 teams you have ahead of them

As always love your thoughts!

Is there a Strength of schedule out there for AA and A that people are using when looking at the rankings? I was looking at different players % of offense with their team and strength of schedule would an interesting column too. i.e easier to get points on a good team playing an easy schedule vs. a weaker team playing a tougher schedule.
