Section 8AA

Post by TheHockeyDJ »

With Brainerd's big upset win @ Moorhead on Thursday, what do you Northwesterners think this section is looking like right now? Where is the Shady Bucnh? I'm hoping Roseau or Brainerd come out of this section, no disrespect to Moorhead, but just want a change of pace down in St. Paul.

Going strictly by winning percentages, 8AA right now, looks like this:

1 BRD
2 SCT
3 ROS
4 BBL
5 MHD
6 RLK
7 NLK
8 BUF
9 BJI
10 MON

really

Post by grandmeadowhockeyfan »

Did you really just post a listing of teams by winning percentage. Does that even really mean anything. Percentage only means something if all the teams play 90% of their games against only their section. Also if the strength of schedule is similar. And those things hardly ever happen in high school hockey. Try ranking by something meaningful.

Saw Roseau play at Warroad and against Bemidji this past weekend and they are pretty damn good. Very good top line and big defensemen. I think they will end up winning the section and will be a big threat at the excel.

goaltending

Post by hipcheck »

When teams are even, it will come down to goaltending. The Section 8AA team that has the hot goalie come playoff time will produce the winner.

Spuds have generally had this factor come playoff time. Rams have a good one, but will need to prove he can win the game on his own. Should be interesting down the stretch!

Winning the section? Yes.
Big threat at the Xcel? No.

Their top five skaters are excellent, but it falls off a cliff after that. I have a hard time seeing them staying with Hill, Edina, East, Blaine, and the other teams that will likely be at the tourney.

Every year people say that section 8AA and the team that comes out of their likely doesn't stand a chance. Moorhead beat Eagan last year and almost beat State runner-up Hill-Murray. Roseau's size on defense will pose a threat to those teams. Fine, they might not make it to the championship but they will be tough to beat.

Uh, yes - I really posted a list strictly by winning percentage. That's what I said it was and that's what it was - too difficult to comprehend ? Schedule strength has nothing to do with that calculation - it is simply your overall won / lost record changed to a percentage. Your won / lost record is what it is, no matter whom / where / when you played.

Win loss ranking

Post by grandmeadowhockeyfan »

Ranking teams by win loss means nothing.
You know that right? Might as well rank them
By net weight of all players or total gpa.

I think net weight of players is definitely a factor.

On a hockey note, Bemdiji has 2 pretty good Goalies.
Unfortunately, limited scoring.

And now 2 second line forwards are injured and out for the season in all likelyhood. A starting D (and good scorer) is out indefinetly with an illness.

A down year gone down farther.

Bantam A (AA?) team is playing very well so there is a future.

And as said here, good tending could steal a game or two for them as they have played well (clse games) with all section foes.

Ouch - sounds like your season is gonna be about as exciting as ours. Oh well, there's always next year (?)

I knew about Leitner, hadn't heard that Carlson got hurt. Too bad, I thought he was playing pretty well.

Who knows. The core of this team (primarily Juniors) did win both the VFW Bantam A State Championship 2 years ago as well as the Pee Wee A State Championship 4 years ago.
