7AA Final: #2 Grand Rapids vs. #1 Duluth East

Post by karl(east) » Sun Feb 24, 2013 9:58 am

7AA comes down to a battle between the top two seeds on Thursday at 7:30 at Amsoil.

7AA playoff series: East leads 6-1
Regular season meeting: East won 2-1; shots 33-9 East
Last playoff meeting: 2011 Section Final; East won 2-1 in OT
Recent series history: East has won the last seven, with all five since 2010 being by one goal.
Last Rapids win: 2007 Section Semifinal, 5-4 in OT.
Bruce LaRoque in section finals: 2-3
Mike Randolph in section finals: 13-1

There aren’t a whole lot of secrets here. Both teams are great defensively and don’t score a ton. East will look to dictate the pace of the game, draw a few penalties, and unleash their top unit. Rapids will look to lock down defensively and rely on the Peterson-Bischoff combination to create some heroics.

Still, there are a few questions worth asking about this one:
-Can either team get any production after a lower line? Both teams' scoring is very top-heavy, and a goal from a 2nd or 3rd line could really change the dynamic.
-Can Rapids stay out of the box? East’s power play continues to be lethal. Moreover, penalties have really cost them in recent meetings; the game-winner in the January game came on the power play, and though both of East’s goals in the 2011 final were at even strength, a series of Rapids penalties down the stretch wore them down and took them off their game.
-Who wins the goaltending battle? Shepard has helped carry Rapids all season, but Parker is pretty good in his own right and has been hot of late, with shutouts in his last three games.

All signs point toward a tight, low-scoring game. Who ya got?

I got East 3-1 with an EN. Should be a great one, but Easts defense will be way too good for GR to get good scoring opportunities on. Still wouldn't be surprised if GR won though.

I see East D too tough for GR.. I agree East 3-1 with an ENG... Lundgren and Moore with one a piece and Toscano with the ENG

I will take East by a final score of 3-0, I don't think Rapids has the offensive punch it will take to break this defensive core from DE. After watching the ER-GR game Saturday I just didn't see anything there to warrant a different outcome.

I honestly just think this game comes down to Dylan Parker. Earlier this year he has struggled alot and let a lot of soft shots in, especially when he played Denfeld. After getting some competition from the back up he's seemed to be doing a lot better. But with three shutouts in a row and the defense playing amazing, I don't think GR can win this one unless Parker has a bad game again.

Depends on which Hound team shows. I gotta go with the darkhorse -- GR.

What is with the "private school" comments and Duluth East haters. All but one of these kids have been playing hockey on the East side of town from mini-mites on up. The one who hasn't moved here as a Bantam as one of his parents located their business in town then. As a matter of fact, there are several kids who would be contributing to this program but left for private school.

If the kids from the east side who go to Marshall, went to east, I guarantee you East would be unstoppable almost every year.
