PageStat State Tournament Selection

Every year at this time we hear everyone's idea about how the state tournament could be differently put together. Obviously this won't happen but it's fun to think about. Much like the NCAA basketball selection or the Pairwise for college hockey, we have the PageStat rankings. I would love to not have section tournaments at all, and extend the season to 30 games. After those 30 games the top 16 get into the state tournament which is held at Xcel. This years tournament would look like this.

#1 Benilde vs. #16 Prior Lake
#8 Edina vs. #9 Hermantown

#4 Eagan vs. #13 Burnsville
#5 Duluth East vs. #12 Breck

#2 Hill-Murray vs. #15 Jefferson
#7 Wayzata vs. #10 Blaine

#3 St Thomas vs. #14 Grand Rapids
#6 Minnetonka vs. #11 Eden Prairie


Then you take the lowest 64 teams in the state enrollment wise and the top 8 teams out the those smallest 64 schools play in another tournament at Mariucci. Lets not even call it state tournament, lets call it the SST (small school tournament)

#1 East Grand Forks vs. vs. #8 Mahtomedi
#4 Thief River Falls vs. #5 Rochester Lourdes

#2 Totino-Grace vs. #7 Duluth Denfeld
#3 St. Cloud Cathedral vs. #6 Warroad


The best 16 teams in the state get to compete for the state title at Xcel. It still gives the small schools something to play for, only at a smaller arena and it is not considered a "state champion"... It's fun to dream, now back to watching blowouts...

Very interesting. Of course not perfect but it's nice to have a new idea floated around instead of "get rid of sections 1AA, 1A, 3A, and 6A."
