NHL Draft 2013

Post by karl(east) » Sun Jun 30, 2013 8:35 pm

Minnesotans taken so far (let me know if I missed anyone):

Rd.-Overall-Name-MN HS

2-38 Connor Hurley (Edina)
2-47 Tommy Vannelli (Minnetonka)
3-76 Taylor Cammarata (Shattuck/USHL)
3-77 Jake Guentzel (Hill-Murray/USHL)
4-118 Hudson Fasching (Apple Valley/NTDP)
5-127 Tucker Poolman (East Grand Forks)
5-140 Teemu Kivihalme (Burnsville)
5-141 Michael Brodzinski (Blaine/USHL)
5-144 Blake Heinrich (Hill-Murray/USHL)
5-147 Grant Besse (Benilde)
5-148 Johnny Brodzinski (Blaine/St. Cloud State)
5-151 Gage Ausmus (East Grand Forks/NTDP)
6-167 Avery Peterson (Grand Rapids)
7-201 Jake Jackson (Tartan)

Still one round to go as I write this, but it already looks like a better haul than last season.

Edit: Jackson included. I also missed Kivihalme on the first list somehow.

The list should now be final. Anthony Brodeur (7-208) went to Shattuck, but isn't really a Minnesotan.

High School hockey is really falling off the map is it not? It seems to get worse every year. Ten high schoolers is not good.

Leagues with players drafted did not count European or college leagues:
OHL-37-17.5%
WHL-33-15.6%
QMJHL-31-14.69%
USHL-26-12.3%
HS-17-8%
TOTAL 144 out of 211 or 68%
If you add the 4 college players to the ushl and high school you would have 47 players out of 211 or 22.2% that went the HS/Midget/USHL then college

I would put your count down to two or three HS players as most left early for opportunities elsewhere. Some after their sophomore year and the Shattuck guys never having played here. We are really stretching when we count a Wisconsin kid who played as a freshman at Shattuck and then left the state.

And don't Luke Johnson and Keaton Thompson make at least two from ND? Where do those numbers come from?

why not be fair to the other states and base it on the total players eligible per state vs those drafted. Easier to get those numbers when you u have so many playing in the state. Minnesota supplying the NHL with role players and farm team fillers year after year, unless of course they play in Ann Arbor or Shattuck.

And this is fair??? I certainly don't think so. There are more players from Minnesota playing key roles on teams in the NHL than any other state too. Not all of them went thru Shattuck or Ann Arbor. And how many players from other states are playing key roles in the NHL who didn't play AAA hockey or go thru Ann Arbor?

Matt Cullen, David Backes, Paul Martin, Blake Wheeler, Jordan Leopold, Tom Gilbert, Alex Goligoski, Ryan McDonagh, Nick Leddy, Jake Gardiner, etc...

None fit your description.

Minnesota has more numbers, why? Instead of crying about stats being skewed by more Minnesotans playing the game on a board dedicated to Minnesota hockey, try changing that. Get more kids to play elsewhere.

This was arguably one of the dumbest, most envy and hate filled posts I've read in a while. Check yourself.

Looks like YAHOO sports thinks a few Draft pick pictures are funny enough for their 10 Ten List:

Been thinking about this some more. You think numbers skew things, eh?

Let's compare Minnesota to that hockey dead area to our East, known as Wisconsin.

How many Minnesotans played hockey this past year? I believe the number is close to 55,000. How many kids played in Wisconsin? I believe the number is just shy of 30,000.

There were 14 Minnesotans drafted and only 2 kids from Wisconsin got their name called. Of the Minnesotans drafted, the two highest players played MNHS hockey last season (Yeah, I know Hurley played at Shattuck a short time) and 6 total were drafted out of MNHS. Neither of the Wisconsin kids played WIHS hockey last year.

So with that in mind let me ask you these questions...

First, are you suggesting the odds are that WI will end up with as many players from this class playing key NHL roles? If so, excuse me while I laugh.

Second, how do you suggest we incorporate USA Hockey participation numbers in order to skew the draft stats of both states in order to not hurt your fragile ego? Per capita draft rate? Wisconsin still looks like an ugly hockey void caught in between MN, MI, and Canada.

Third, how is this not an indictment of HS hockey elsewhere in this country much more than it is HS hockey in Minnesota?

hate filled post, really, I just like to watch you homers justify your existence. I don't have a dog in the fight, Its just funny to watch you react when someone dares to challenge your numbers. Oh, by the way lose anymore players to junior teams? Some wonder way Wisconsin and Minnesota don't get along. Maybe next draft will have more Wisconsin players then Minnesota, but who cares anyway. I know its not Canada.

I'm not mad or upset in the slightest. Just helping you understand how utterly ridiculous your post was. And having a little honest fun at your expense in the process. You opened the can of worms :)

And clearly you do care because you got so butt hurt over Minnesotans being proud of Minnesotans getting drafted on a message board dedicated to Minnesota hockey.

8 drafted either played out their HS years or are still in HS.

Good to see MN kids get their names called, regardless of where they played last year.

For some people hoping their names would get called. Hang in there - if your good enough you still have a shot. There were 82 players "non-drafted" in the NHL this season alone - that would amount to amount 3.5 whole teams , maybe.
__________________________________________________________
Nice article by: http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/opinion ... eason.html

They seem to be everywhere in this young NHL season, whether it be Dan Boyle scoring a power-play goal for the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday or Yann Danis replacing Devan Dubynk in goal for the Edmonton Oilers in the same game.

There also was David Clarkson's big goal for the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday. Cory Conacher scored for the Tampa Bay Lightning. Andy McDonald checked in with a goal for the St. Louis Blues.

On Monday, 27-year-old rookie blue-liner Mike Kostka continued to impress the Toronto Maple Leafs faithful on that team's top defence pairing. Meanwhile, Brian Lashoff scored in his first career NHL game for the Detroit Red Wings and teammate Damien Brunner was lauded for his highlight-reel shootout winner.

What do all these players have in common? They went undrafted. They slipped through the cracks, but still eventually found their way to the NHL.

In total, there are 82 undrafted players currently sprinkled on NHL rosters. That's approximately 12 per cent of the league.

Here is a list of undrafted players in the NHL this season:

Vancouver Canucks (5) -- Alexandre Burrows, Andrew Ebbett, Jason Garrison, Aaron Volpatti, Chris Tanev

Montreal Canadiens (5) -- Francis Bouillon, Josh Gorges, Rene Bourque, David Desharnais, Raphael Diaz

New Jersey Devils (5) -- David Clarkson, Andy Greene, Peter Harrold, Ryan Carter, Stephen Gionta

Tampa Bay Lightning (5) -- Martin St. Louis, Marc-Andre Bergeron, Teddy Purcell, Pierre-Cedric Labrie, Cory Conacher

Dallas Stars (5) -- Vernon Fiddler, Brenden Dillon, Ryan Garbutt, Jordie Benn, Christopher Nilstorp

Anaheim Ducks (4) -- Brad Staubitz, Jordan Hendry, Jonas Hiller, Viktor Fasth

Toronto Maple Leafs (4) -- Colton Orr, Mike Kostka, Tyler Bozak, Ben Scrivens

New York Rangers (4) -- Jeff Halpern, Dan Girardi, Stu Bickel, Matt Gilroy

San Jose Sharks (4) -- Dan Boyle, Antti Niemi, Matt Irwin, Andrew Desjardins

Minnesota Wild (4) -- Zenon Konopka, Niklas Backstrom, Darroll Powe, Nate Prosser

Calgary Flames (3) -- Curtis Glencross, Mark Giordano, Derek Smith

Carolina Hurricanes (3) -- Chad LaRose, Kevin Westgarth, Jeremy Welsh
