For games played Saturday, 25 January.

Jaxon Nelson had 2 assists in Luverne's 10-4 win over Morris/Benson. Looking at the score sheet, I suspect that Luverne used their 2nd and 3rd (and 4th?) lines through much of the game.

Minnehaha Academy downed St. Paul Como Park 9-1 with scoring from freshmen Ryan Pearson (3a), Jake Lundquist (g, a), and Joel Lenhart (a).

River Lakes beat Northern Lakes 6-3 and Connor Beltz assisted on two goals.

Dante Zapata had 4 assists in Achiever Academy's 8-4 win over Rice Lake (WI?).

St. Paul Academy got a goal each from Riley Bowman and Dev McCabe in their 3-2 win over Providence Academy.

Mitch Bourgerie had 2 assists in a losing cause as St. Michael-Albertville went down to Buffalo 8-4.

Peter Johnson (g, a) helped Fergus Falls to a 3-3 draw with Little Falls.

Joey Anderson assisted on two goals as Hill-Murray beat Mahtomedi 5-2.

Mayo beat John Marshall 6-3 in a battle of Rochester schools, with Anthony Oliveto scoring a goal and assisting on one.

How do they miss the 98 with the most points?

Chaz Smedsrud, Luverne, is a 98 born player and has 66 points.

Almost a full 20 more points than the leader they have on there.

Teak wrote:... not to be confused with a "point spread".

As I have done for the past several years, I will be following 9th grader scoring this season, along with any 8th or 7th graders who may also be playing varsity. I do this for a few simple reasons:

1. It is significant for a 9th grader to make varsity in any sport, on any squad.
2. There are fewer 9th graders playing varsity, than 10th, 11th, and 12th graders; thus, it is easier for a lazy person like me to follow.
3. Although there are some very good 9th graders NOT playing varsity due to stiff upper-class competition at some schools (e.g., Kyle Rau), many of the top players are so good early on that they DO play varsity, and we become aware of them in their 'break-out' frosh season. There are many examples, just look back at some old threads on this same topic.
4. Since a good number of top-notch player leave school early for juniors, it is better to follow the frosh who are less likely to leave early.

Now, here is a brief list of what this thread is NOT:
1. I am not going to rate players on some dumb-@ss system that takes into account 'strength-of-schedule' or 'school prestige' or etc. Teak couldn't care less if the school is Edina or East Lake School for the Blind; a frosh on varsity is an accomplishment at any level. If you want to rate players like a cut of beef, please start your own thread. I am a strong supporter of 'community' and think that small schools mostly get 'short shifts' on this forum.
2. I am not going to break out the players by position; I just don't have that kind of time. Sorry. Minta ma'af. Mai pen rai.
3. One metric that I like to use is the '% involvement in team goals'. This is a player's points divided by the number of team goals. It shows how important that player is to his team's scoring (not the defense).

To get it started, here is how the top frosh scoring ended up last season:
(Games Played, if < 25) Goals-Assists (% involvement in team goals).
If it says they were an 8th grader last season, we'll be following them again this season.

Minnesota Hockey Hub has Mr. Meier listed as a sophomore. Can you confirm that he is just a freshman? How about sending me his latest report card.

If he hasn't passed Algebra 1 yet, then maybe I'll consider it.

Teak, I see South St Paul has a Freshman - Cameron Buhl - 9 goals, 17a for 26pts tied for team lead. Don't know him, just heard a couple kids talking about him a little bit ago.

Okay, thanks for the head's up. I miss a player or two "under the radar" so I appreciate the help.

Starting the weekend update. For games played through last night (Friday), but will get a look at Saturday's games tomorrow.

Jaxon Nelson continues to lead the frosh scoring list, as an 8th grader, racking up a goal and five assists in wins over Hutchinson (7-1) and Windom (10-2) last week. Luverne's second and third lines are putting up good points also, so the Cardinals are not padding stats in any way. We will look back at this 'breakout' year for the Luverne lad even if he goes off to Shattuck or some other finishing school.

Bryceton Butkiewicz continues to lead Moose Lake Area in scoring, and scored a short-handed goal in the 3-1 win over St. Paul Highland Park.

Joey Anderson scored 2 goals and assisted on 3 as Hill-Murray knocked off Richfield 13-1.

Ben Meyers scored a short-handed goal for Delano in a tough 4-3 loss to Mound-Westonka.
