Guess a couple of sections will have to find a different place with lousy seats/sightlines for their semi-finals and finals.

I'm guessing Vadnais Heights would be available.

4AA (3AA then) played their Finals at Mariucci 3 times during the mid-90s. 94-95-96. White Bear won all 3. They might be happy to return there.

1992 4AA Semifinal

This game. 1992 4AA Semifinal. The Coliseum was packed with folks sitting in the aisles - for a semifinal game. Two great St. Paul hockey schools located 5 miles apart. Pride of the East Side. Private vs. Public. They had been in separate sections the year before and both were '91 State Tournament teams. HM was the defending State Champs. Johnson had great '91 & '92 seasons resurrecting a once glorious program. Underdog Johnson staged this great 3rd period rally to take a 5-4 lead with 3:57 left. HM tied it with 2:09 to go. They proceeded to play an incredible 2 OTs. There were several great scoring chances by both teams before HM won it late in the 2nd OT. Even us HMers felt horrible for those Johnson kids that played their hearts out that night.

Either this or White Bear upsetting in OT in 2010.

Regardless of being a WB alum, the two greatest section final games I've seen in person, one for my guys, one for theirs.

I think you mean White Bear upsetting Hill in 2011. It's hard to narrow it down since there have been so many great games there, but the 06 section championship and 11 championship were great.

That was the only game I've ever seen there. Pretty much my first experience with high school hockey at that point. Honestly made me want to have my kids play hockey someday.

Definitely White Bear Lake beating Hill Murray in OT to go to State in 2011. Pretty sure that WBL was up 4-1 at one point, but, of course, Hill stormed back to tie. I expected the Bears to lose — I was wrong and happy to be it!

For sure the WBL and HM section final in 2011. The best hockey game I have ever seen in person. Thanks Ben Bahe for missing that completely empty net in the 1st OT :). People in our student section were saying its over when we had the big lead but me and a couple other friends knew HM was too good and that they would comeback. Of course it was the WBL guy Schulze who tied it up for HM. Even if WBL would have lost it would have been the best game I've seen

2000 4AA Semifinals. Paul Martin's #1 ranked Elk River team goes up 4-0 to start the game only to watch Osseo come all the way back to win 5-4.

That ER team was probably the best team since 1993 Bloomington Jefferson. Better than their 2001 team that won the AA tourney. Blaine went on to win 5AA and the state championship. Elk River beat Blaine 7-1 in the last game of the regular season.

How about Section Final in 1998? Scored tied 1-1 between SSP and CDH. SSP scored with 19 or 20 seconds left to go up 2-1. CDH calls a time out and goes down and scores, to tie 2-2 on a goal by Mike Shier. CDH then wins in OT, as future Heisman Trophy Winner and sophomore Chris Weinke puts in a rebound to send CDH to their first state tournament in school history.

The Coliseum

Here's my top 5. I am going to miss the late Feb. - early March games in that dump. Marriucci (if it's Marriucci) will not be the same.

1. Mentioned above 1992 Section 3AA Semi - HM 6, Johnson 5, 2OT
2. 2006 Section 3AA Final - HM 5, WBL 4, 2OT. Incredible 2nd period where HM goes up 3-0, WBL scores 4 straight, HM ties it in the 3rd and wins in the 2nd OT.
3. 1984 Section 4AA Final - SP Johnson 5, Hastings 4, OT. Johnson returns to state after 14 years.
4. 2011 Section 4AA Final - WBL 5, HM 4, 2 OT - have to admire the fire WBL showed that night. Bill Lechner retired the Charlie Brown sweater after that one.
5. 2008 Section 4AA Final - HM 2, WBL 1 - incredibly even and tense game after HM had beaten WBL 5-2 & 6-3 earlier that year. Toughest playoff or state tournament game HM would face on its way to a state title.

Hill-Murray and White Bear Lake have had 18 total section playoff games held in the Coliseum. 11 of those are in the last 14 years. 10 of the 18 were 1-goal games with 7 decided in OT.

The 2011 WBL vs Hill section final is definitely the best hockey game I have ever seen. Even better than seeing Kyle Rau score the game winner in overtime in the State Tournament Championship game in 2011. I was a WBL student back in 2011 and lets just say there was no better seat to have than in the middle of the blaze orange student section. It will forever be my favorite high school memory. Hopefully WBL can beat Hill again this year in the last ever secition 4AA Championship played at the colesium.

The 2006 and 2011 section final games were two of the most entertaining, dramatic hockey games I've ever had the pleasure of watching. I was like a little kid jumping up and down with joy after Mac Jensen ended what seemed like an eternity since WBL last beat Hill.

My first game that I ever saw in the coliseum was in "03, and over the last decade I've seem plenty of great hockey games there. Below is a list of my 5 all time favorites games at the coliseum.

1. 2011 Section Final: WBL beat #1 ranked Hill Murray in a dramatic double OT thriller. WBL blew a 4-1 lead in the 3rd, but were able to survive OT and ended up winning in double OT by a terrific goal from Mac Jensen.

2. 2006 Section Final: Maybe the most dramatic 2nd period I've ever seen. Mike Hoeffel scores on a breakaway to put Hill Murray up 3-0, Sager then takes a timeout. From there on WBL scored 4 straight in a fairly short period and went into the 3rd on a 5 on 3 PP. Hill survived that and tied it in the 3rd, which led to some very entertaining OT hockey. I remember Zach Hanson going end to end clanking one off the pipe in double OT, then moments later WBL gets called for a bad penalty which led to the game winner for Hill Murray..

3. 2005 Section Final: Maybe the largest crowd I've ever seen at the coliseum which saw at the time #1 Centennial vs #2 WBL (correct me if I'm wrong). A very entertaining game which was led by the great goaltending of Zach Faust. Even though he pulled a Jeff Frazee in this game and let one in from the other end of the ice.. WBL went on to win in a game where Centennial had a ton of great scoring chances.

4. 2009 Section Final: The semi final game between Hill/WBL was very entertaining, but this double OT game between Stillwater and Hill Murray topped it. I wasn't planning on attending this one, but I'm sure glad I did. Stillwater gave Hill all they could handle, but yet came up short in the end.

5A. 2008 Section Final: Even though WBL lost this one 2-1. I was very proud of the effort they displayed. They were no where near as talented as this Hill Murray team that went on to win state, but did everything they could to keep it close.

5B. 2004 Semi Final: WBL got off to a quick 3-0 lead in the 1st, only to watch Hill chip away and eventually take a 4-3 lead. WBL tied it late in the 3rd, but went on to lose in OT. Very entertaining back and forth game. Hill ended up going on to lose 3-2 in the section final, but made it very interesting in the 3rd being down 3-0. They ended up not being able to complete the comeback though in the final seconds.

Side note: That 2004 Centennial team was the only non WBL/Hill team to go to state from that section in almost 30 years. Still no other team besides Hill or WBL since then. That's why I consider WBL/Hill the best rivalry in high school hockey.

The Hill-WBL games could use their own thread. I think I read earlier 7 of the last 16 went into OT? Amazing. But I'll let others cover them.

The second of two (and the more significant) Hill-Johnson game was mentioned. But there was one other game of significance. In 1984 Johnson had maybe their best team of my lifetime. At that time Hill, Cretin and STA were in the City Conference. Aldrich hosted the home games for Hill, Harding and Johnson. The first game of the two regular season games was at Aldrich as usual, and Johnson won. By the time the second game rolled around, the games scheduled for the Colisuem that night were moved to Aldrich in order to accommodate the expected crowds. It proved to be a wise move. I'm having trouble recalling a larger crowd for a regular season Hill since then. Maybe it was the largest ever Hill regular season crowd for all I know.

Hill won the second game. But as is often the case when two good teams split two conference games then meet in section or state tournament play the team that won the first game also won the third, a first round game at the Civic Center.

Anoka had a very good team in 1990-91. I did not attend their semi-final game against (I believe) Cloquet. Anoka lost in a huge upset, and I read about it in the PiPress the next day. The article said that in the Cloquet locker room on the chalk board it said this:

They will take us lightly

We will end their season

It's really something to consider the tears and absolute elation felt in those locker rooms. Hundreds of players who can recall years later exactly how they felt.

But it's still a dump. It's the Metro Dome of high school hockey. Incredible moments, memories of amazing events and plays, all in a horrible facility.[/u]

That was indeed a nice upset by Cloquet, earning them the right to lose to East in OT in the section final. :)
