Left early, graduated early. Same thing. You understand my point, that while he should have been a Sr in HS he was playing D1 hockey at CC who at the time was a perennial powerhouse. Pretty impressive for a kid who is 17/18 yrs old.

And not being familiar with this guy.......................his leaving early (or whatever it was), benefited him hockey-wise in the long run....................how ?
Played almost 400 games in the NHL, played pro hockey for 15 years, likely mentored a great number of younger guys in the AHL on their way to the show. All in all, an incredible experience and more than 99.9% of kids who ever lace up a pair of skates can say. Whether he left a year early to play college changed the course of his career for better or worse will never be known, but the bottom line is, its unlikely he would change anything he did.

Could he have still received a great education at CC had he stuck around his Sr year of HS at Jefferson? Sure. I think a lot had to do with the fact that his older brother Ian who played at CC also was gonna be a Sr at CC that year (i believe) and they wanted to play together. Pretty cool.

And now he is in his first year as an assistant coach for the Springfield Falcons of the AHL

Other than Phil Housley Toby Peterson was the best 9th grade high school player I've seen in the 40+ I've followed high school hockey.

Yep, definitely impressive... though I personally draw a distinction between somebody who leaves before graduation and somebody who leaves after graduation. Some people (not me) assign a negative connotation to kids who leave early for juniors. It wouldn't be fair to put Peterson (or Aaron Ness) in that bucket. That's all I was getting at.

Well, you could make an argument that it benefited him an extra $375,000.

Thanks for the info.

Of course, it can also be argued, he would have made that anyway.

I bet Sats is on the mark; wanted to play with his brother.

I didn't think this deserved it's own thread, and it probably doesn't have much affect on the Mr. Hockey race, but I think it's still interesting enough to share...

Jake was formerly "committed" to the currently undefeated Huskies of #5 ranked Michigan Tech.

Interesting, thanks.

Especially since there are no athletic scholarships in the Ivy League, vs. Tech.

Though a degree from Harvard does carry a bit more weight than one from Tech, eh.

I know some coaches keep recruiting players after they commit, but Harvard? I would like to think a chance to get in at Harvard trumps most mid-level school commits.

I would guess he was being recruited by Harvard all along, and had a change of heart.

Still WAY to early to start making judgments, but here I go anyway...

• Malmquist is still the frontrunner, though Garrett Wait's outstanding play is going to hurt Dylan's candidacy, not help.
• I picked the wrong Poehling. Nick is the finisher.
• Dixon Bowen is putting up numbers that will be difficult to overlook.

All the rest of the favorites are still in it, but these are my top three at the moment with some teams only one game into the season. I'll do a revised top ten at the Christmas break.

Ive been sticking with Bowen all along , and still am, because:

1) There is some momemtum for a single A winner, and EGF likely to repeat
as champions

2) Difficult to pick one Poehling vs the other, momemtum will shift back/forth, i.e last night.

3) Edina has too many stars, and Malmquist is asked to play so many different roles that it is difficult for him to put up huge numbers. Just look at how Giles is trying to find the right 1 and 2 line chemistry with him, and also playing a 2 way game.

4) 3 instate NHL Draftwatch Dmen will make it difficult to pick one vs the other . Just look at last night Sadek vs McNeely, or go watch HM Olsen this weekend vs BSM. Hard to differentiate, all are superb

5) Unless there is a clearcut metro selection, there will be some momemtum for a clear cut outstate winner, i.e Bowen

Good numbers, but strength of schedule will come into play.

1) I feel like they just pick the best player. They don't just pick a single A guy because there has not been a winner from that class in awhile, so i don't know what "momentum" there is for a single A guy. Also, EGF just got spanked and has been on average spending about 18 minutes a night in the box. They are probably the favorite, but are they "likely" to repeat over the field? I'm not so sure about that.

2) If the way Nick Poehling is playing is consistent throughout the season I believe he is a much easier pick than his brother. He is the guy scoring all the goals.

3)I can't disagree too much with this one, but players have won the award when playing on star-studded teams.

4) If any of these guys added an offensive element to their game than maybe they could pull in the award. I don't see that happening though, I think a forward will for sure when the award this year.

5) Again, I don't agree with the idea that they will be any momentum for a Northern guy just because its a tight decision between two metro players. If there is a scenario where the two best players end up being Jaremko and Poehling (or whoever) and the decision is tough to make I don't see them going with Bowen just because he is not from the metro.

So here's my top 10 right now...

1. Jake Jaremko - Leading AA seniors in scoring, team doing well enough.
2. Nick Poehling - Leading scorer on the #1 team.
3. Dixon Bowen - Top player in 1A.
4. Dylan Malmquist - First game without Wait in the lineup and he gets outperformed by his little brother.
5. Jacob Olson - The gaudy stats aren't there yet, but it's obvious to anybody watching that he's the engine driving HM.
6. Jack McNeely - Lower on the list than Nick Poehling, but higher than Sadek.
7. Luke Jaycox - Keep an eye on this crafty darkhorse defenseman.
8. Mark Kaske - Benilde's strongest candidate at the moment.
9. Christiano Versich - St. Thomas needs at least one candidate on the list.
10. Jordan Fralich - Meh, why not? Best player on a 7-0 1A team.

Jaremko will win it. If not him, Mr. Hockey should do a first time thing and split the award between Nick and Jack Poehling. Where they go, LN goes. Bottom line.

The box score for that game is completely messed up. The points given to Garrett should go to Dylan. Garrett didn't even play in the varsity game.

That would definitely make a difference, though he's still got to get ahead of Wait at some point.

Looking at the Hub Senior Scorers, Jaremko and Malmquist are battling it out.

45 points and 39 points respectively after 15 games.

Tufto, Broetzman, Versich all close behind

Over on top As, Rasmussen and Moran Seniors from Marshall, Kero and Pionk from Hermantown, and Bowen a ways back in the pack

As of mid January, Mr. Hockey looks to probably be Jaremkos to lose, but Malquist closing the gap.

Many dynamics yet to unfold however.

Speaking of closing the gap, if Im reading the numbers right (Green 4?), Malmquist has already thru early January exceeded his point production of each the past two entire season totals and very close to his freshman year. If he keeps up this pace, he amazingly may have a slight chance of catching Dan Carlsons all time Edina record. Although the difficult Lake Conference schedule and goalies ahead of him will make it difficult for Dylan to continue that pace I think.

Jaremko with a much lighter schedule the rest of the way. He is such a team player and ER is getting more balanced scoring. Nice to see him on the PK. Best player needs to be on the ice.

I've been noticing Jaremko on the PK a little more, myself. I questioned why he wasn't out there more often, especially with how bad they've been short handed. I don't know the statistics, maybe a quick trip to the Hub would reveal the #'s, but the percentages can't be good. I also take note that Jake is fantastic at faceoffs, rarely loses. He might even be 100% on the year, I'd have to check my resources.

Even though The River may have a lighter latter schedule, there's still some interesting battles coming up. Speaking specifically within the conference. I'm intrigued by the rematches with Anoka & Blaine. While Elks whomped Anoka 7-1 the first time around, dare I say Anoka seems like a team that's flirting with the word respectable. I imagine the second time around would be closer. While game 1 with Blaine was wild in that ER was up 4-0 before a total 3rd period collapse, which happened within minutes, sending the game to OT before the Elks won. The next time around on Blaine's home sheet will be interesting. Andover was a very close game until they decided to spend the entire 3rd period in the box, allowing ER to pull away with a few PPGs, that should be a good game 2 as well.

Not really blowing teams out anymore but winning. Need to settle on the Soph in goal. Should be getting the big D-man back soon from a broken ankle, will help Kiersted.

Your right, Jaremko has a nice all around game, though not very physical. Good commit for Mankato # 1 ranked BTW.
