Only 1 Cloquet player made the elite roster for the north. Looks like a long season for the Lumberjacks.

That charade has been going on for awhile.

One of the reasons the name got changed from the "Minnesota High School Elite League" to "Upper Midwest Elite League".

I've always thought them playing in the league was a bunch of crap myself.

Not necessarily.

To judge a team via the number of players they have in the league, would be a big mistake.

Waaaay to much politics involved, to base a team judgement on that.

Thanks. Yea I figured that, and I was being sarcastic. The Cloquet E/C Lumberjack boys high school hockey team will be just fine this upcoming season. GO JACKS!!!!

On the North Dakota players: given Great Plains' performance over the past few years, it's hard to argue that deserving players in that part of the state are getting jilted because of the NoDak boys. The ones who make it are usually pretty good, and they do have a pretty decent high school tradition there, considering the size of the state. (There are, what, 17 programs?) That's not on my list of issues with the Elite League.

The distribution by team seems a bit more balanced than in years past; there's no one team whose number of players jumps out as head-scratchingly high. There are some omissions, but some of them might be related to juniors/fall sports/AAA alternatives, etc. We'll see how things sort out over the next month and a half before the Elite League season opens.

A little surprising to see 3 goalies on a couple of the teams. I can't remember that happening before.

I'd disagree with your ND players comment karl. I can think of kids, from most, if not all, section 8 teams that would have been just as good, and in some cases, better picks.

I see no reason why, if they want to be in the league, they can't form their own team, as other states have.

As to the GP team performance, I wonder how much pre-league practice the other teams, especially metro, get together for ?

If so, the gp teams have no such luxury available to them. That is a big reason, why their record tends to improve around the second half of the season; the kids start to come together, after having played together for a bit.

I see Mishmash is dovetailed in with the 6 Lakeville North kids, he must have been the last of the 7 Edina selects.

Some interesting dynamics from last March final game

And likely next March final game

Same old "Elite" league with the secret handshakes and free passes. It makes no sense that a 9th or 10th grader gets a pass. If there good enough they should prove it at the tryout (and not get a pass because of a resume like a couple from this year). And don't put a kid on a team because a brother made it or played last year, mom/dad are involved or helped coach in the D league or HP program.

WestMetro and OU8 are both connected to this topic. Can you explain why the lack of integrity? I still chuckle at the VonRuden situation last year. Couldn't make the "Elite" roster but played with the Magicians before moving to the USHL. List kids that have been given a pass to a team without the need to tryout. Don't even have a tryout. Have a published rule that states if a kid plays 3+ games in the league they automatically get invited for the next year. Communicate in advance to the 120 kids trying out that maybe 10-15 total will be selected.

Lots of talk about transparency these days. I know it will never work in hockey but put it out there since it's going to come out sooner or later like today. Also, unlike MN Hockey with "Selects" publish in order on the website the 5 F and 5 D 'alternates' that will get called in as subs or move up when a kid leaves for juniors. Open the doors to the "Elite" castle so us peasant folk can get a peek. I'm done so it's time for someone to give the life lesson pep talk.

And my pick for the Sheehy "Elite league have had enough of my high school and MN hockey" award this year is going to a goalie. At least they won't put a goalie on the cover of the bible. :P

Pretty spot on...I was able to watch many of the ND kids on this list and none really stood out. Bender's a good goalie, but I'm not sure he faces a ton of great competition. Perhaps many of the kids out of 8 that might have made the team, are playing football this fall...

As I mentioned in my comments on the other thread regarding the Elite League Tryout Dates, it was pretty hard to argue with Sophomore Hank Sorenson being preselected. If anyone needs a refresher on Hank Sorenson, go back and watch the Turkey Trot game tape last November where he had the ****s to level (legitimate hit) Tyler Nanne during Hanks first varsity weekend as a freshman

Also sophomore Ryan Poehling was preselected , although I personally rank Hank a bit higher.

I had expected the total Sophomore count to be about 6, but it turned out a bit higher.

It makes sense its going to get higher and higher as time goes by, as youth hockey cranks out more and more bigger and faster talent , and that more and more juniors and seniors early depart the high school system.

As OU812 mentioned in his excellent detailed writeup , the ratio of total preselects to total tryouts was pretty close to trends of recent years, and I agree with the principle of preselecting the top talent to begin with. So long as some leveling comes into play for statewide and AA/A selections. In this case, there was a national OTB Elite or two who had to go through the tryout process.

In the final analysis, looks like good representation from around the state and different classes, should be another good group of teams. I want to be around when Southwest first plays SouthEast, good thing its a no check league. And I hope these boys have learned to keep the sticks down.

I would imagine football comes into play, at least somewhat, though not 100% sure myself. Maybe someone else can chime in on that.
Of course, they play football in nd too, so who knows.

Regardless, nd players on the team is not a new item; it's been happening for several years I believe.

My main objection is as I said; make their own team, if they're that interested in the league.

I appreciate everybody asking for my opinions on these topics, but i'm not able to help with my common sense posts at this time. I've joined puckstopshere for a summer of kayaking, rock climbing and camp fire songs.

I agree. 9th Graders? He is from a private school though. Any 9th graders ever make it from a public school.

If there were a 9th grade public school player good enough he would be on there.

I doubt it!! Depends what school, and or who your parents are. Anyone who has been through this process knows how tainted it truly is. Money money and more money! Bottom line!!

Little doubt about Mike Anderson being in the same talent group as the other Elites. He played big for HM last year as an 8th grader, I saw him in 3 top 10 team games at Aldrich.

As far as upcoming 99 BirthYear MSHSL HighSchoolers to keep a future eye on, see attached link to OTB national 99 Rankings.

4 Edina, 1 EP, 1 LVS, 1 Stillwater

I don't argue that he's good, but he's know where near his brother! Further more I have a hard time believing that at this point he's hand down better and more deserving than some Seniors or juniors. I'm saying he didn't make it on talent alone! I have also seen him play. He's very good for his age group.

Its not just our opinions , the link I attached shows national OTB has got Mike Anderson in top 25 national 99s, and he already has D1. So to me that's independent evidence he fairly belongs in the top 125 Minnesota Elite selections.

Cant think of any obvious better senior or junior that got bumped out because of him.
