Phil Housley Inducted Into Hockey Hall of Fame

Congrats to South St. Paul alum Phil Housley. Incredibly, he's only the third Minnesotan inducted into the (international) HHOF along with Eveleth's Frank Brimsek and White Bear Lake's Moose Goheen.

i agree, the best to come out of MN…

the only talent i have seen in this state that could compare was sid crosby. housley had more talent…

phil was easily better than the brotens, crowleys, etc….

i doubt i will see another in my lifetime that is at the same level.

well deserved overdue honor. had he played center his offensive numbers would have been gaudy…..

Based on what it took to get Housley in, I don't think there are any other candidates at the moment. Parise, McDonagh, and Backes are all great hockey players/leaders, but they'll all fall short of the HHOF. Maybe Faulk if he can get on a Stanley Cup winning team.

i think of the current players mcdonagh has the best shot. he is one of the best d in the game and he plays in NY, which will help him greatly…

parise has a shot also. i think he needs to up his point production though, which is a tough thing to do with the wild…

faulk is still young…. he should start to hit his stride in a year or two..

No votes of respect for a certain active senior citizen steady eddy with 600 points in 1000 games?

In terms of retired candidates, no votes for our well known star of the North North? How about our lesser known east metro important role player with tremendous work ethic and team leadership skills contributing to four dynasty cups and long career?

The US Hockey Hall of Fame exists to honor those guys. The international HHOF is much more discriminating.

Congrats to Phil Housley! He made it look so easy out there on the ice.

It is amazing to see that he is only the 3rd Minnesotan in the HHOF.

Frank "Moose" Goheen is an interesting Hall of Famer. He never played a game in the NHL but that is largely because he predated it. His playing career started in 1914. The NHL did not exist until 1917 (and was a four team Canadian league with no U.S. based teams until the 1924 entry of the Bruins).

Moose Goheen represented the United States in Hockey at the 1920 "Summer" Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium. (There were no Winter Olympics until 1924). The games there were played on a 184 x 59 sheet with seven players per side (including goaltender) and most of the teams had fewer than 10 players on their roster (USA had 11). USA was the highest scoring team in the tournament by far, scoring 52 goals in their four games compared to Canada's 29. Unfortunately, the game between the two teams ended 2-0 for Canada (the only two goals that USA allowed in the tournament) and USA took home the Silver.

To bring this topic back around to Minnesota High School hockey....it is interesting to note that one of the referees listed in a box score of the first state tournament in 1945 was Frank Goheen, who was 51 years old at the time.

My grandma would tell me stories about her uncle Moose when I was a kid. Im 46 years old and love hearing about him to this day. He is the great-great-great uncle of my hockey playing kid. Good stuff Mitch

At 6' 220, Moose would be a good sized hockey player today and 100 years ago he must have had a presence on the ice like Zdeno Chara in our time.

QUESTION:

Housley is the 3rd person from Minnesota inducted in HHOF as a player....How many others were inducted in the builders category?

I know of John Mariucci, Bob Johnson, and Herb Brooks. Surely there are others.

Considering how long it took them to induct Housley, no other Minnesota born players should be holding their breath at this point, but the top 3 retired NHL players from MN not in HHOF are probably:

Neal Broten
Reed Larson
Dave Christian

I really don't see any current MN NHL players eventually making to the HHOF. As someone already mentioned, Parise probably has the best chance, however his point production likely isn't high enough.

Neal Broten had a very good NHL career, but if it took Housley this long I don't see it happening.

Matt Cullen's had a very nice career, but when people like Jeremy Roenick, Keith Tkachuk, Brian Bellows, and Paul Kariya, among others, aren't in yet, there is no way Cullen would ever be seriously considered.
