Cole Lawrence scored early for Eagles.
----------------
Freshman Ben Brinkman, just back to lineup after a fall football injury, got his first high school goal on PP- a nice backhander from right side of goal
--------------
One to one after first. Shots pretty even 12 to 10.
------------------------
Edina goes on PP at the 10 minute mark of period 2.
------------------------
Walker scores on PP, leads Hornets in points at 31.
-----------------------
EP goes on PP. Graham hits the crossbar. Then EP's Roehl scores!
----------------------
Clayton Phillips scores on a 1 on 2 breakaway, snipe in upper right corner!
-----
Hornets 3-2 after 2, SOGS 23 to 14 EP
-----
Third period underway.
-----------
3 on 1 for Eagles, but no goal
--------------
EP goes on PP, DeGrood turns back everything
------------
EP goes back on another PP. Leivermann ties it up
----------
Edina goes on PP. EP PK gets the job done
---------
7 minutes to go
------------
Walker scores on delayed penalty 6 on 5! No chance for Durocher.
------------
Eagles pull Durocher, then calls timeout, faceoff to right of DeGrood with 20 seconds left
------------------
Hornets win!! DeGrood was the story tonight.

St. Cloud tech and St. Cloud Apollo tied 4-4 midway through the 3rd period. 1st time all season that Apollo has let up 4 goals.

Edina beats EP. Too soon to say Hornets are coming? Wouldn't wanna be in their section.

9-4-0 Sounds like they may have dialed it back as the game moved on.

A few notes on the Edina/EP game to add to West Metro's summary.

Lawrence's goal was a monster wrister to the upper corner. Mittelstadt fed him with a nice saucer pass on a 2 on 1. Great play by both.

While EP was on the penalty kill, Mittelstadt was carrying the puck out of the zone. Instead of shooting it down into the Edina zone, he circled back into the defensive zone. Two Edina guys rushed toward him, put the body on him and dug out the puck. It wasn't immediate, but eventually this turned into the Walker goal. Crosby also baited Leivermann into the penalty that created the PP. Both were down on the ice after a hit/collision. Crosby pushed him after they got up, they exchanged shoves, and Leivermann went for one more. The ref called him for it.

Clayton Phillips now plays on the 2nd line with Dornbach and Crosby. He won the race to an open puck at center ice. As he got into the slot he was hooked badly, but that didn't phase him. As West Metro said, he sniped the upper right corner.

Early in the 3rd Mittelstadt, Graham, and Lawrence broke into the zone on a 3 on 1. I don't remember who had the puck but they passed to the right winger who looked to pass back but was already past the net. A rare opportunity they didn't convert.

The Sammy Walker game winner was a nice goal. On a delayed penalty, he rushed the puck up the wing and went top shelf with a backhander.

DeGrood played a great game. 36 saves on 39 shots.

Ben Brinkman
- This was my first time watching him play. Excellent all around game. He had the PP goal and had a few nice rushes with the puck as well. He did have a couple miscues with the puck in the 1st period that created EP possessions.

- I was more impressed with the physical presence he provided. He did an outstanding job shutting down Mittelstadt along the boards. He also eliminated his guy several times. Graham picked himself up off the ice a couple times after passing the puck.

- There was a sequence in the first period where he was hit decently hard near the blue line. EP cycled the puck back into the offensive zone. The guy who hit him ended up with the puck on the boards. Brinkman quickly destroyed his guy. As the guy is on the ice and getting back up, Brinkman leans down and repeatedly whacks his stick on the ice in front of him, just taunting away. He continued to do so until the guy was skating away. Maybe that's an edge that the Hornets have been missing this year.

Elk River 4
Centennial 1

Great game by ER tender, Meyers. Good win for Elks being without Zerban and J. Perbix.

Nice bounce back for Meyers after getting the hook last game.

The first time I saw Edina this year, I thought there was no way they'd get through the season without putting Dornbach with another serious playmaker on his line. I didn't expect it to take this long, or for that player to be Phillips, but if this works out, the Hornets may prove to be more than a one-line team. Plus this allows them to preserve Copeland-Walker-Scheerer, which has been their best line all along.

They still have a couple of big games left, so we'll see if they can follow this up. But an Edina with two threatening lines and a Brinkman-reinforced D corps could wind up being pretty nasty.

Karl, my thought exactly. I haven't seen the hornets for a few weeks. Their reconfigured lines along with Brinkman really put some extra fuel in their tank. And DeGrood played with great confidence with the improved Dcorp. BB knows how to keep the low slot clear!
