Class A Rankings 1-31-16

Post by HShockeywatcher » Sun Jan 31, 2016 2:35 am

There were a lot of exciting games last week but there were no upsets so things didn't really get moved; Apollo had no shut outs but also won 4 games, Mahtomedi had an interesting week and tied Hill, and no one in the 6-11 range had any games to distinguish themselves up or down. Mahtomedi is still the big question mark as you could really make a quality case for them anywhere from 2 through 6. With only beating a team lower than them, I am choosing to leave them where they're at until they play Breck or someone else stumbles.

There aren't a lot of games to change things between now and the end of the season, but there are a couple this week in Little Falls/Cathedral, Hibbing/Greenway and of course any upsets out there.

Happy discussing!

1. [1] Hermantown (18-2-1) [10-0]
The Hawks won two more games handily. How will they do on the road in Farmington this week?
Tues 2/2 @ Farmington, Fri 2/5 @ Brainerd

2. [2] Breck (17-3) [10-0]
The Mustangs officially claimed the section top seed by shutting out Blake and beat SPA in OT. Three more games to work on things this week before playing in Mahtomedi next week.
Tues 2/2 vs Minnehaha Academy, Thurs 2/4 vs Lourdes, Sat 2/6 @ Providence Academy

3. [3] St Cloud Apollo (19-2) [18-1]
The Eagles had their toughest stretch of games this past week and all were close games, three 1 goal games and a 2 goal win over Hibbing.
Mon 2/1 @ Fergus Falls, Thurs 2/4 vs Brainerd

4. [4] Mahtomedi (13-6-1) [5-1]
The Zephyrs went 1-1-1 this week but things went better than most would've expected. They got another Class A win and didn't lose to conference foe Hill-Murray. A win over St Thomas on Tuesday sets them up for second place in the conference. They play Breck to start next week and still could potentially be a 2 seed at state.
Tues 2/2 vs St Thomas Academy, Sat vs Totino-Grace

5. [5] Hibbing (19-2) [14-1]
The Bluejackets lost a good game to Apollo this week which was their first Class A loss of the season. They host Greenway this Tuesday and close the season in Hermantown next week so any seed between 1 and 3 is still potentially up in the air for sections. First up, Greenway.
Tues 2/2 vs Greenway, Thurs 2/4 @ Eveleth-Gilbert

6. [6] Thief River Falls (16-5) [12-3]
The Prowlers have 3 goal losses to both Breck and Hermantown and a 1 goal loss to Hibbing so they appear to be on the outside of the top teams, but will play any of them close. 3 road games to close the regular season starting with a Roseau team they beat 6-3 in their season opener.
Mon 2/1 @ Roseau, Thurs 2/4 vs Red Lake Falls

7. [7] Delano (15-6) [12-2]
The Tigers lost to Holy Family again but is unblemished in Wright county play and has only conference games remaining. The remainder of the regular season isn't going to do much for them, but they will be the 2 seed in their section.
Tues 2/2 vs Waconia, Fri 2/5 @ New Prague

8. [8] St Cloud Cathedral (14-6) [14-6]
The Crusaders lost a 3 goal game to a good Mahtomedi team then traveled to Virginia and shut out a team who has played many teams close lately. 4 road games and 3 AA teams to close the season out; will it be enough to prepare them to beat Little Falls and Apollo in consecutive games in the playoffs?
Mon 2/1 vs Little Falls, Thurs 2/4 @ Alexandria, Sat 2/6 @ Duluth Marshall

9. [9] Blake (11-10) [7-6]
The Bears were shut out by Breck but they beat SPA recently. After the likely wins this week they have another shot at both SPA and Breck next week.
Tues 2/2 vs New Prague, Thurs 2/4 vs Providence Academy

10. [11] St Paul Academy (16-5) [13-5]
The Spartans lost in OT to Breck showing that they can play with the best, but it was still a loss and their recent loss to Blake keeps them right behind the Bears. A rematch with Blake next week could help them win the last 4 games of the season going strong into sections.
Tues 2/2 @ South St Paul

11. [10] Greenway (18-3) [17-3]
The Raiders did play last week so they've had a while to prep for their Hibbing game this week. Can they win in Hibbing and finish the season on an 8 game win streak going into sections?
Tues 2/2 @ Hibbing, Fri 2/5 vs St Paul Johnson, Sat 2/6 vs River Lakes

12. [12] East Grand Forks (13-8-1) [12-4]
The Green Wave's #2 junior scorer from last year has been out all season with an injury and returned with 3 points in their win over Warroad. They are likely the 2 seed, but winning this week and upsetting Their River Falls next week could change that.
Tues 2/2 vs Roseau, Fri 2/5 vs Moorhead

13. [14] Warroad (9-14) [6-9]
The Warriors recently lost a close one to TRF on the road and now to EGF on the road. They will have to beat both teams consecutively but they won't go down easy.
Fri 2/5 @ Bemidji

14. [15] Duluth Denfeld (10-11-1) [7-6]
The Hunters have a game to not overlook this week followed by two AA games next week to prepare them for sections.
Sat 2/6 vs Eveleth-Gilbert

15. [13] Little Falls (15-5-1)
The Fliers are 0-3-1 in their last 4 games with all 3 losses to section opponents; can they rebound Monday in St Cloud?
Mon 2/1 @ Cathedral, Fri 2/5 @Mora

Nice work on the rankings. Here's what I have:

1. Hermantown
2. Breck
3. Apollo
4. Delano
5. Hibbing
6. Thief River Falls
7. Mahtomedi
8. Greenway
9. SPA
10. EGF

A few things:
-I wrestled with putting Mahtomedi ahead of Greenway, given the recent comparative results vs Hermantown, but Mahtomedi did tie a quality AA team in HM while Greenway didn't play, so I moved then up.

-I don't get the love for Blake. They have played the 7th toughest schedule in Class A, but a record barely above .500 is unimpressive. I especially can't put Blake above EGF, given EGF has the 3rd toughest schedule in A and has a better record than Blake, not to mention Loven returning for EGF.

7 SCC
4 LF
Shots: 42-39 SCC
Should be a good rematch assuming it happens!

5 Apollo
3 Fergus Falls
Shots: 22-21 Apollo
This is a team Apollo beat 7-1 the first time around. There is a chance they are the 4 seed and we see this match up again!

5 Virginia
2 North Shore

2 Hutchinson
1 Orono

5 Chisago Lakes
0 St Paul Johnson

I noticed that and thought "Huh. Weird" But the math is what the math is. If your previous opponents have a bad week, it happens. There are too many different ways for a rating to change. I could examine this one instance in some detail but......uh, nah. :)

I'm just curious why Greenway should be higher? What have they done that has impressed you??

Class A: Top 10

Delano looks good. Greenway and SPA too high. TRF, Cath and Blake in the right spots. Strength of schedule. It is a factor.

They lost to Hermantown by 1. Their entire ranking should be based on one game, duh. Or at least that's what the narrative is that's been said.

I, too, don't understand it. They lost to Hibbing by 2, twice. Hibbing beat EGF, Crookson, Cloquet, Virginia and TRF all by 1 goal. So, by the one game logic, Greenway is worse than Hibbing twice as much as those 5 teams (or something like that), right?

SPA recently lost to Blake by 1, so they are sitting right behind Blake. They also went to OT with Breck.
Their only "quality win," however, is over EGF on Dec 5. So, it's reasonable to think they aren't as good as their rating, but would you drop that more than one spot with EGF being so close behind them?

In the last week:

7 Apollo
3 Brainerd

2 Hermantown
1 Brainerd

so clearly Apollo is better than Hermantown, right?
