Best HS players to come out of cities in MN

Post by sherwood »

Here is a few I can think of:

Greenway- Mike Antonovich
Roseau- Neal Broten
Warroad- TJ Oshie
Bemidji- George Pelawa
Redwing- Johnny Pohl
Grand Rapids- Bill Baker
Duluth East- Dave Spehar
Moorhead- Brian Lee
Richfield- Darby Hendrickson
Hastings- Dan Welch
Burnsville- Scotty Bloom
Edina- Paul Ranheim
Wayzata- Joey Miller
Eden Prairie- Nick Leddy
Minnetonka- Jake Gardiner
Roseville- Marty Sertich
Lakeville South- Justin Kloos
Lakeville North- Jack Poehling
Blaine- Nick Bjugstad
Cloquet- Jamie Langenbrunner
Centennial- Tom Gorowsky
Bloomington (Jefferson)- Mike Crowley
St. Louis Park- Eric Rasmussen
White Bear Lake- Brian Bonin
Elk River- Paul Martin

These are the players that first come to mind as I drive through these towns. Anyone have any other thoughts or players to come out of other cities?

Warroad? Henry Boucha, Dave Christian for starters.

I'd argue Jon Casey out of Grand Rapids over Bill Baker.

Also add Phil Housley out of SSP

Yeah, Boucha should be listed for Warroad. It seems like this lost is biased towards the most recent. I'm not a hockey historian by any means but most of these names seem to be from the last 20 years.

And there is some guy from Eveleth that should be on the list.

You're right, I was probably just thinking of players that I have watched. That is why I wanted to open it up for discussion. Its always fun to get a debate going. I agree with Boucha.

Matt Cullen way ahead of Brian Lee out of Moorhead IMO.

Probably can add Corey Millen and Derek Plante to Cloquet

Hermantown-Jon Francisco(UMD 1999-2003). A case could be made for BJ Radovich and Drew Leblanc
Duluth Marshall-Jack Connolly(UMD 2008-2012, Hobey Baker winner 2012).
Proctor-Aaron Slattengren(late 90's, His Proctor Rail teams always gave Hermantown fits)
Warroad-TJ Oshie, Aaron Marvin(members of 2004-2005 undefeated Warrior team).
Benilde St. Margaret's- Troy Riddle(yeah we all know he scored the game winner against Hermantown in the controversial QF in 1999.)
Greenway-Gino Guyer
Red Wing- Johnny Pohl
Richfield- Darby Hendrickson
Silver Bay-Conboy(lead Mariners program to first and only state tournament in 1999. Silver Bay is now "North Shore" co-op with Two Harbors.)
Grand Rapids- Patrick White (lead Thunder Hawks to back to back AA state championship game appearance in 2006 and 2007. Avery Peterson(was not able to get GR to state tournament but still a great all round player.)
Cloquet-Derek Plante and Jamie Langenbrunner(members of Dallas Stars Stanley Cup team in 1999.)
Tyler Johnson(Was a Mr Hockey finalist in 2006-2007. Came back from injury in 2007 playoffs to score winning goal against Elk River). Reid Ellingson(One of the best goalies in state in his time in high school. Posted shut out win aginst Duluth East in 2006 playoffs. Memorable image is of course of him laying on his stomach dejected after giving up winning goal in 2ot loss in 2005 7AA final).

This has been debated many times before and it all comes down to criteria. Let's speak on Grand Rapids...

Based on HS career: Alex Goligoski, Avery Peterson, Jon Casey, Patrick White

Based on post-GR career: Bill Baker, Jon Casey, Alex Goligoski

Bases on a blend of the two?

How do you compare era?
How do you compare the one-class system to the two-class system?
How do you compare the 20-game schedule to the 25-game schedule?

Fun topic, though!

Care to elaborate? He played squirts, peewees, bantams and varsity at Cloquet. Unless you mean his place of birth, which everyone has wrong anyway.
