With Bushy now gone from TRF, 8A belongs to Warroad and EGF for years to come, I bet EGF goes 3 of the next 5 years, Warroad the other 2. Only way this changes is if Roseau or Bemidji dropped down.zamboniexhaustinhaler wrote:8a is up for grabs, but I'd say egf would be the favorite unless Warroad pulls a Warroad
Trf most likely is going to be very very weak for a very very long time.

It would have taken more than him for trf to be relevant.
A lot more.
Probably just as well; rumor has it there was quite a bit of "friction" among the trf group and him.
Geez Bo, you sure started this early. I'll discuss a wager with you the next time you run into me at the rink. However, the only bet is whether Breck can give Hermantown a better run in the ship.
I'll do a top teams pre-season summary sometime next week.
Spoiler alert -- Delano is a top-5 team, but will again (barring injuries at Breck) have to score an upset to make state. After this year, Delano will be the hands down section favorite. Orono is my dark horse pick in this section to give the section favorites a problem this year.
Section 2A will easily be the deepest section this year (that'll get 'em going...).

For 7A, my guess is:
1. Hermantown
2. Greenway
3. Hibbing
4. Virginia
5. Denfeld
6. North Shore
7. Eveleth-Gilbert
8. Proctor
9. I-Falls
10. Ely
I think Greenway has the talent to be a top 5 A team, if they are able to get solid goaltending. They shouldn't lose to anyone other than Hermantown in 7A, as they bring back the vast majority of their scoring and add some good bantam talent to the mix.
Losing Perunovich to juniors and Ullan to the NTDP drops Hibbing from a top 3 A team to likely a 10-20 A team. There is still talent on this team, and quite a bit of depth as far as single A is concerned. There isn't much bantam help arriving, but the JV was ridiculously good last year (which was a reason many people disliked the previous coach). If they get some solid goaltending, they should be able to beat out Virginia for the #3 seed.
Virginia is kind of a mystery to me. They bring in a solid bantam class to a varsity team that had some talent last year, but their outstanding goalie who kept them in most games graduated. Seitz is a star and his being left off the North Elite League team is a major mistake. Murray and Phaneuf were solid defenseman last year, and if the youngsters can acclimate to varsity quickly, then Virginia could absolutely grab the #3 seed.
I never really know how good Denfeld will be anymore. They should always be a top 5 team in 7A, but surprise transfers and move-ins seem to be fairly common there and could vault them into the top 3 if it happens again.

Always enjoy your analysis as it is right on the mark. The big question with Greenway is their goaltending. Their JV goalie has played well at times but moving to varsity is a whole different world. Bringing in the bantam goalie is always iffy. Sophomores can be surprising or just overwhelmed. If Greenway can get that solid goalie they have a better chance to avoid an upset in Sectionals and possibly avoid running time with Hermantown. Easily the best Greenway team since the Gino Guyer/Andy Sertich teams. Lot of hype about Virginia because of their bantam team so it will be interesting to see how they mature by the end of the season. I don't have any idea about Denfeld either. Based on last year's roster they won't have home ice advantage at sectionals but I thought the same last year and they were the #3 seed.

Hermantown
For all that's holy in life someone please tell me that this is Hermantown last year in A. Not a challenge for the kids, nothing left to prove! Youth numbers are off the charts - no more excuses.
