With so much focus on the top AA teams, following is a summary of the more notable Class A games from the weekend. Friday was actually the more interesting day, aside from the big #1 vs. #2 matchup.
Friday
Orono 4, Mound Westonka 2
Orono all but wraps up the one seed in 2A in a game that turned into an ugly penalty fest in the 3rd period.
Alexandria 3, Little Falls 2
Alex sneaks out with an OT win to keep their hopes for the two seed alive.
Simley 4, Tartan 3
Spartans with a nice OT win over a decent AA foe and continue a nice turnaround from last year.
Warroad 8, EGF 1
The EGF freefall continues, and the Warriors may well end up with the one seed in 8A, in addition to hosting sectionals.
Saturday
Marshall 3, Minnesota River 3
The Tigers had a rough few days, losing to LTC on Thursday and needing a furious comeback to tie a so-so MR squad.
North Branch 2, Chisago Lakes 1
The Vikings squeak by their neighboring rival in OT and pose a strong threat to Monticello in the weak Section 5A.
Hermantown 4, Mahtomedi 1
Read Karl’s excellent recap in the the thread for this game. While this may not be one of Hermantown’s strongest teams, they continue to get the job done against their class A competition.
South St. Paul 5, Owatonna 2
SSP continues to roll along under the radar, and it is nice to see this former powerhouse put together their best season in several years.
