Usually 5 from champ
4 from runner up
2 from third
and 1 from con champ....

I always look to see who was selected but not much thought after that...

This year Maht (4th place) got a spot on team and perhaps deservedly so...

Anyone have any inside info on how they go about making selections and when they do it?

No clue how they do it, but the winning goalie ALWAYS makes it.

I have no problem with the two goalies selected to the Class A All Tournament team. Corneliusen for Thief River gave up two goals in three tournament games and Boline for Alexandria gave up three goals in three games, both made the All Tournament team. Babekuhl for Orono gave up six goals in his three games and was left off.

Cent goalie looked awesome on Thursday and Friday night. Was he also in the net during the Saturday shellacking?

I don't watch much if any outstate A hockey so it was nice to see a player like Jack Powell of Alexandria get some recognition. On the AA side Grant Docter didn't get much recognition coming into the tournament relative to other defensemen but he had a great tournament and was recognized.

Mark,

I made a post on this forum after the Girls tournament because the person who had the game winnah in the last two close games was somehow omitted. A response indicated that the MSHSL looks for coaches to volunteer and commit to being at all games and voting. It made it sound like this is a thankless task and there's probably less that goes into it than you'd imagine.

Nothing would surprise me having seen the dairy farmers' process for awarding Mr. Basketball in Florida a little more than a decade ago. It had such huge holes in it that valid complaints raised by me and others led to significant changes. Very long story short, I was threatened with a lawsuit by a street agent for an undeserving player that went on to a stint with the Timberwolves. Only when a light was shone on the selection was it apparent there were gaps as big as the Grand Canyon.

You are touching on something I've noticed where the Division I committed players are often not as good as the best uncommitted players. I could cite several head scratchers. Docter looks great every time I see Minnetonka.

I had a vote (I think?) during the years I was in the press box. Ballots are distributed at the start of the championship game and due at the end of the first period. They do this so they have time to tabulate votes and take coaches' votes into account also, though it can obviously lead to kids who have big 2nd and 3rd periods or score late game-winning goals getting snubbed.

There are no guidelines on numbers per team, and I voted for players on anywhere from teams 1-5 when I did vote. Simply because of how the Tournament went, most voters seemed to think that the teams in the title game deserved 4-5, the 3rd place team 2-3, and maybe one from a 4th or 5th place team who had a particularly good Tourney. My experience was that it was never hard to find 6 forwards, but separating the defensemen in a 3-game tournament could be more challenging, and the goalies were hit or miss depending on how the games went. On my end of the press box, at least, it was always sparked some lively discussion over the course of the first period. We'd usually come to something resembling consensus and our picks would usually be close to what came out, though on occasion it seemed like a star would replace a kid that I thought was more deserving based on his Tourney performance, seemingly on name recognition.

It was never a very transparent as to what happened after we voted, though. One year they even failed to collect ballots from people in my row in the press box, which included some people from organizations with bigger names than mine. No one seemed terribly bothered about this. Ballots are not anonymous, so I wouldn't be surprised to learn that coaches and/or certain members of the media get more weight than others. Which is fine, honestly, but transparency would be nice.

I have no beefs with this season's AA team. Could perhaps have flipped LaMaster for Paine among the East D given Paine's big (if fluky) goal, but Luke was great, too. At the end of the first period of the championship I might have had Allen in for Glockner, but Glockner played well in the later stages of the title game, so I think his selection is justified given Centennial's undoing in the 3rd place game. Was glad to see Molenaar make it based on his Tourney stats, even though he is not one of the 3 most hyped Tonka forwards. Class A looks on point to me, too.
