Yes. I've confirmed it with several folks.

Back in 10-11, CEC got an East transfer his senior year, Nolan Meyer. It was interesting, but it didn't influence the pecking order that year. Duluth East still dominated CEC that year. A mid-season injury to Senior Ben Michaud had more to do with this than anything. Ben was a glue guy big time! Without him, things just seemed to fall apart =( that year.....

Forward or Defense? Is this kid a varsity player or JV?

Why leave a deep team for another deep team??

Wonder what the connection is? Always something .lol

Yes, there is a player transferring, but with all due respect to the kid, it's not one who will change the 7AA arms race. Rising senior defenseman who got a little varsity time last season but did not make the playoff roster, and probably did not figure prominently in the plans for next season. Different scenario from Nolan Meyer, who was a respectable HS player.

You know who I was pulling for! Please let this kid get some burn so he can post a big year and move on to realize his potential!!

Agreed. Nolan was a very nice hs hockey puckster, but he did not change the balance of power, which was/is Duluth East Hockey......

Transfer

Karl -- I have tremendous respect for your insight and sources regarding the East program. However, I must respectfully disagree with your description of his probable impact had he stayed at East. I know Mike isn't happy about losing him and, I'm pretty sure he felt this player would compete for the number 4 defenseman spot and, at worst probably be the 5th defenseman. Certainly just my personal opinion, I feel that this player compares very favorably to Nolan in regards to what each of their top end impacts on the team could've been. :)
Maybe it's a matter of semantics, but I don't see someone who would've been scrapping for a 4th defenseman spot as "figuring prominently" in plans. I'm just looking at this the same way I look at every team's incoming/returning talent when thinking about preseason rankings and assessments of teams. A player with this one's resume just doesn't register as a significant addition or subtraction. East does have some holes to fill on D next season, so he certainly had a shot to play, but (again, with all due respect) I don't think the difference between him and the next kid in line is going to make or break East's (or Cloquet's) season.

Nolan Meyer had 30ish varsity points at the time he transferred, and had been on East's "top" line on a state tournament team the year before. (First line out and matched with other teams' top players, though not its highest scoring.) He went on to put up 48 points for Cloquet in his senior year. I want to say he made HP teams, and he played a couple of years of D-III hockey afterwards. He's not remembered especially well since that Cloquet team didn't do anything special and East had a very deep incoming bantam class that filled any hole he left. But if this kid has anywhere near that level of influence or success that Meyer did, I'll be the first one to eat crow.

I am curious. Has Duluth East ever had a transfer from Cloquet?

CEC is pretty deep every where on their roster for next winter. I think it will be just as difficult for this kid to break into some kind of rotation with CEC. It sounds as though this was also the case for this kid at Duluth East for next winter. Either way, I wish him the best. Randolph and Smalley are great coaches. Not everybody in this world is going to agree. Sometimes "agreeing to disagree" and moving on is the best for any two that disagree.

Within my memory, there was one, sort of. It was quite the saga. A kid named Garrett Bates played his sophomore year at East, transferred to Cloquet for his junior year (this was the year Randolph was relieved of his duties at East), and then returned to East for his senior year, only to be kicked off the team midseason for extracurricular activities. Lots of friends made in the process, I'm sure.

Backup goalie JP Durfee left Cloquet for East his senior season in 1992-93 I beleive it was. He's the only one I can recall that played his youth hockey at Cloquet and even JV before transferring to East.

92-93; that was in the hayday of Cloquet hockey; state tournament appearances back to back. He must not of been in contention with the starter or backup positions

That is NOT the goalie that transferred to East. Also, that goalie that made the all-tourney team graduated, and could not have been in contention for the starting goalie spot the year JP transferred.
