Possible Mr. Hockey Finalists 2018-2019

Now that we're fully into the doldrums of summer, we've had a couple of early departure developments, and the only thread that's being regularly added to currently is CTE (a worthy cause, but I think the conversation is now going in circles), I'm hoping the time is right to begin an early Mr. Hockey finalists thread. Obviously, things will change with potential new-ish names on the scene after national camps and more guys leaving early, but this is where I see it now. Feel free to add/subtract/debate names as you please. That's the fun!

In no particular order:

Jack Jensen (EP)
Mike Koster (Chaska)
Josh Luedtke (Tonka)
Ethan Frisch (Moorhead)
Bryce Brodzinski (Blaine)
Rob Christy (STA)
Ryder Donovan (DE)
Jack Perbix (ER)
Ben Helgeson (HM)
Charlie Schoen (Andover)

Other names: Jett Jungels (Edina), Brady Meyer (North Branch... 99% sure he's gone but I don't know if I've seen it confirmed anywhere), Jack Bayless (Tonka), Mason Nevers (Edina), Blaine Warnert (Chaska), Landon Langenbrunner (CEC), Donte Lawson (Greenway), Jackson Jutting (PL), Danny Magnuson (CDH), Trevor Kukkonen (Maple Grove), Shane Griffin (Lakeville North).

Would love to add some more Single A players, but unfortunately don't see enough of them during the season and it's tough to go by stats alone since their strength of schedule is often different. Overall it's a pretty deep class so I'm sure I've missed somebody.

looks pretty complete 62.

I thought there was a thread on this a few months ago, with comments and also prediction of early departs ? Anyway....

Andovers Dainty also had over 50 points last year along with Schoen, although with much lower SOS than JJ who was under 40 I recall

Think Perbix likely to be the early favorite, JJ and Donovan in close pursuit.

67 points for Nevers & 64 for Jungels in their junior season. I'm not sure how there is a list of 10 frontrunners without them.

Donovan had 62.
Perbix had 68.
Jensen had 38.
Christy had 42.
Brodzinski had 57.
Schoen had 63.
Helgeson had 36.

Edina's soft schedule?

I thought so too, but I couldn't find it.

The committee is obviously biased against Edina, and since they picked a Hornet last year it will be another few decades before they do it again

In all honesty, you are correct. They should be on there. Couldn't figure out who to take off.. maybe Helgeson? Obviously they were beneficiaries of stellar teammates. Same could be said for a couple others on the list, but it will be interesting to see how things go for them this year.

For sure. Donovan had a modest amount of goals, but Worth scoring a ton so he racked up assists. When a player didn't have a standout to play with the numbers are a lot lower. I'll offer up Jack Jensen as an example.

Edina will be a top team next season. If their top scorers have a ton of points, which is a reasonable assumption because they did last year, those players will be on a list of 10 guys in the mix around late December.

Interesting off-season banter. Because they played all season on a line with Walker I don't think a lot of people realize how good Jungels & Nevers were.

The D you listed are excellent. It'll be interesting to see which actually make the discussion. Seems to me things are shaped a great deal by the Elite League and input from NHL scouts when names show up on the watch list.

Edina's soft schedule?

Nevers and Jungles not at top of Mr Hockey lists as those numbers, talented as those kids are, are by-product of playing on 1st line w/ Walker. Assuming a wait -and-see approach based on the lineups and/or possible further Edina departures? Not sure who will be top 2 centers for Edina this year as SW, LC, ES are all gone so maybe Cavanagh or Morton are possibilities, some JV kids...TBD. Definte impact on Nevers and JJ...so we shall see.

Surely you jest re: Edina's 'soft schedule'? Toughest conference in state with Tonka, EP and Wyz...played HF, Centennial, WBL, LV So and North, DE, ER, etc etc. I believe, according to PageStat, that Edina had top 3 toughest SOS's...maybe even #1? Followed by Wayzata, EP, Mtka (theres that pesky Lake Conf again), Moorhead, DE, GR, PL, Blaine and LV North to round out the top 10 toughest SOS's.

But I agree, after Walker received MR Hockey it will be awhile until its awarded to an Edina kid again, which is fine. Maybe Jimmy Clark in a few years?

62 Agree Edina unlikely so soon again with who is in pipeline

OOTC. All good points on those star Hornets, and Hornet team outlook for this year, number 2 only to Tonka on my list.

but Perbix, JJ have had NHL interest as will Donovan, which will help keep them as front runners , if they stay for senior year and perform as expected .
If Perbix and JJ do not , then it’s Donovan’s to lose .

Very true. DK wasn't on anybody's radar outside of Edina before the Elite League, and Walker being an NHL draft pick really solidified his spot. A couple of the guys I mentioned are eligible for this year's draft, so that will certainly play a role.

Have to wonder if playing in the USHL before the season helps or hurts Mr. Hockey chances. I'm not sure how much that enters player's mind when they're deciding where to play, but it would be interesting to see historical data there. Obviously, Walker was Elite League and Mittelstadt was USHL.

If Chaska takes a step up into the top 10 or even top 5 my money will be on Defenseman Mike Koster. He had 55 points last season albeit against a weaker schedule than some listed here. None the less I believe it will be one of the defensemen.

WarmUp

Right now Ive got the Hawks 10th on my own preseason list, hoping the juniors stay for their senior year. I think I saw someone a couple months ago that had them even higher.

Id like to see them start the season in Nov/Dec by knocking off a couple top 15 teams and consistently beating the weaker teams by 3 or 4 goals.

I’m told Warnert and Koster are doing Elite League this fall instead of USHL and they’ve confirmed they are staying, which surely puts Koster in mix of top candidates. Not sure on others but I’d assume if they stay the rest will stay. Early season tests vs Rosemount, CEC, and Eastview will be telling, and then the gauntlet of Tonka, EP, Prior Lake, Edina around Christmas will have major 2AA implications. Can imagine EP will want revenge after being knocked off by Hawks in sections.

With all the early departures and Jensen's injury, I think it will come down to Koster and Donovan.

Agreed - it most likely be Koster or Donovan.

So you are saying Chaska or Duluth East. Are you kidding me? Chaska? Chaska hockey? This Chaska kid will have to be Wayne Gretzky reincarnated. Common people. Do we have to be fair, politically correct, and equal opportunity on the forum?

I'll look for your reaction to Mr. Koster after they come up to Cloquet at the end of November...may not be pretty.

Its Donovans to lose

Agree Koster towards top of the rest, with all the high profile events hes played in, and played well

Darkhorses- Luedtke, Lawson, Jutting

( If Chaska wants to get to next level, theyve got to play two consistent offensively minded and point producing lines ,who are less reliant on Mike carrying the puck out of the D zone and through neutral ice. The top level opponents will figure out how to counter that by the end of the first period, like Tonka did at Braemar section playoffs last year.)

I agree based on the little bit of elite league I have seen.

Please! You think I’m worried about Chapstick.....I mean Chaska. That’s what you put on your lips when it’s cold out. I can’t STAND metro high school hockey, especially during the season. 218 hockey and then nothing for me. Although I do appreciate the White Bear Lake Bears and Elk River Elks. If your offended, that’s a you problem. Grow a set 🤭😮😁

What is wrong with metro high school hockey?

Disliking Chaska is bizarre. I think they will be a great story this season and have their best team ever.

Blake is going to be a ton of fun to watch. Andover should be right on top rivaling Minnetonka. Great three-way battle for St. Paul-side private school supremacy. Some great story lines throughout M/SP.

Koster is not Wayne Gretzky but I talked with a group of parents from the Blades team that Mike played for last year and they told me the scouts compare him to Jordan Leopold.

To me , Koster style of play more resembles Peruni or Jack Achan
