How Boynton, who’s evidently been starting since 2015-2016 wasn’t awarded an “invite” to the Elite League is a complete travesty & really a black eye regarding their goalie selection process! ☝️

If you are going to include Wolfe (who is a solid goalie imho) then you should also include Swenson from Andover who has also played 3 games and has a .970 save percentage and a 0.33 GAA

Not to take anything away from EITHER Andover goalie, but that’s some great team defense!

Can we all agree that the save % stat is absolutely meaningless? I think we've all been to enough HS games to know that shots/saves are rarely recorded accurately. I appreciate that all volunteer score keepers are doing the best they can, but how many actually know that a shot is only truly a shot if it would have gone in if the goalie wasn't there, AND it was shot with the intent of trying to score a goal. At the next game you attend, watch how many times shots are awarded for pucks that were going 3 feet wide. Also, watch the mad scrambles in front where the goalie makes 3 or 4 amazing saves and the shot keeper adds "1" to the total, because they just can't see. It is very, very far from an exact science. In a 25 shot game, one save equals .04, so one save can take the save % from .92 to .96, turning a goalie from good to great, even though that one so-called shot was going 5 feet wide.

Agree, I think it's relatively rare to attend a game where shots are what I would consider accurate (+/- 5%). I would estimate shots are in many cases 15% to as much as 30% off. I'd also say it's far more frequent that shots are under-reported (missed) than over-reported (captured the one going 3 ft wide).

For example, I recently attended a game where they reported a team had 8 shots for a period, keep in mind the team had scored 4 goals that period and two of them were rebounds (so there are 6 shots right there), so you're telling me the goalie only made 2 saves for the remainder of the period? I didn't count, but that goalie easily saw 15 shots that period.

So if save % is meaningless, how do you suggest the general public evaluate "walls' from "sieves"? Vertical jump? coolest helmet? Beer Chug (only for 218 teams)? Save % DOES have value. Wins have value; GA has value. They are stats and yes, different people are doing the counting on saves but until someone shows me 2 SD results with less than 2% error or a multiple regression analysis that uses Wins, GA and save percentage as the independent variables and it shows an r-squared over 95% as well as high R bared squared, I'm going to use save % as an indicator of weather a goalie is good, great or a sieve (School Board Chairman's kid) GB

Do what you want GB. Wins and GA are different because it's hard to get those wrong. A win is a win, and a goal is a goal, for the most part they are not subjective (even though determining who is ultimately responsible for each may be). Imagine the NHL relying on shots/saves determined by volunteer score keepers with horrible sight lines to approximately 1/2 (those coming from the opposite side of the ice) of all shot attempts.... Also, as I outlined, in a 25 save scenario, 1 save is 4% of the total, 2 saves 8%. It doesn't take many errors to really skew the numbers.

GBGH, just trolling you on a slow Thursday. I completely understand your concern if the person counting the saves is clueless then the statistic is bogus. I don't agree that the majority of shot counters are clueless. If they count a save that shouldn't be one in the first, they probably don't count a save in the third that should have been one therefore, they are perfect in their job. If one game has a shot counter who is liberal in his shot count, the next game may have a shot counter who is conservative in his counting and over 25 games with 500 or so shots, your one shot .2%.

Why do you want consistency? I have Ralph Waldo Emerson's backing in that we don't want our shot counters to "think consistently from one day to the next." Ralph Waldo's "hobgoblin of little minds"---"a foolish consistency". GB

As a goalie uncle to my niece who played Blaine Varsity, my brother’s biggest complaint was the shot counting being done from the box and not the stands with a good elevated view. I’ve done the clock and understand his thinking. Angles also make it hard. We were at the Blaine /Maple Grove boys game the other day where BB got his hatty and saw the next day shots were 48-32 in favor of Blaine. We all laughed at that one. No way Blaine puts up 48 against those Crimson boys. We estimated it’s to be around 25-25 or maybe 30. My brother said the Holy Family scoresheet guy must have tracked shots lol.

Since most teams now have about 18 games...maybe the qualifying criterion for making the list should be a greater number of starts or maybe 200+ shots faced...
3 games is 1/6 of the starts.

After taking a closer look...there are some goalies with only 2 games. If a goalie gets 1 out of 3 games he would now have 6. This list would shrink by 18 names.

Wow, Fritsinger’s save percentage decreased by 2.3% in one week. That was a serious shelling by Blaine, and the WBL game didn’t help since he only faced 14 shots, saving 12.

Thanks, though there probably isn’t a whole lot of competition in that category! I have always followed Breck closely for obvious reasons, but started paying more attention to high school hockey as a whole the last few years. With more games available for streaming now, I really decided to focus on Class A this year, since there isn’t as much focus on that level on the board.
