Class A Rankings 12-2-2018

Post by HShockeywatcher »

There were a handful of games among teams in the rankings, but there wasn't much moving this week because most games turned out according to the rankings. There's still 5 teams undefeated, and even more who haven't lost to Class A opponents, with lots of hockey left. It looks like there is a definite tier at the top, time will tell us how small it is. If there's any teams not mentioned here you think deserve being mentioned, post about them.

1. [2] Cathedral (3-0) (3-0)
The Crusaders are undefeated, including dominating wins over two Top 10 teams this week. Can they keep it going on the road this week?
This week: Fri @ Greenway, Sat @ Thief River Falls

2. [1] Hermantown (1-1) (0-0)
The Hawks lost to a good Wayzata team in OT and then beat Lakeville South. They don't play their first relevant Class A opponent until January when they play Cathedral on the road.
This week: Fri @ Benilde, Sat @ Eden Prairie

3. [3] Alexandria (3-0) (3-0)
The Cardinals haven't been challenged much yet and that doesn't look to change this week.
This week: Tues vs Sauk Rapids-Rice, Thurs @ River Lakes

4. [4] Mahtomedi (2-0) (1-0)
The Zephyrs are undefeated and have won both of their games by 5 goal margins. They should be tested in a conference test this week hosting the Pioneers.
This week: Tues vs Hill-Murray, Sat @ Owatonna

5. [5] Greenway (2-0) (1-0)
The Raiders beat Virginia by 1. They have two big tests coming up this week.
This week: Tues vs Denfeld, Fri vs Cathedral, Sat @ East Grand Forks

6. [6] East Grand Forks (4-1) (3-1)
The Green Wave beat Red River but then were dominated by Cathedral. Greenway this week and Alexandria next week should be a good test of where they should be.
This week: Thurs @ Park Rapids, Sat vs Greenway

7. [7] Orono (1-2) (1-1)
After two losses to start the season, the Spartans bounce back with a solid win over Litchfield.
This week: Thurs @ Minneapolis, Sat vs Monticello

8. [8] Warroad (1-2) (1-1)
The Warriors were shut out by Cathedral, but rebounded beating Sartell this week. How will they do in Virginia?
This week: Tues vs Crookston, Fri @ Virginia, Sat @ Grand Rapids

9. [9] Thief River Falls (3-1-1) (3-0)
The Prowlers are undefeated in Class A games this season; will that end when they host Cathedral?
This week: Fri vs Tartan, Sat vs Cathedral

10. [10] Mankato East (2-2) (1-0)
The Cougars's losses are to one of WI's best teams and Mayo. Their schedule is such that any Class A losses will drop them quite a bit for a while. Can they beat Northfield?
This week: Thurs vs Northfield

11. [14] Virginia (2-1) (2-1)
This week: Tues @ Grand Rapids, Fri vs Warroad

12. [12] Sartell (1-1) (1-1)
This week: Tues @ River Lakes, Sat @ Chaska

13. [11] Monticello (1-1-1) (1-0-1)
This week: Tues vs Princeton, Thurs @ Chisago Lakes, Sat @ Orono

14. [13] Northfield (1-0) (1-0)
This week: Thurs @ Mankato East

15. [15] Mound Westonka (3-1) (3-1)
This week: Tues @ St Paul Academy, Thurs vs Rochester Lourdes, Sat vs Bloomington Kennedy

Others to watch

Breck (2-2) (2-1)
This week: Sat @ Holy Angels

Delano (0-2) (0-2)
This week: Thurs @ Breck

Litchfield (1-1) (1-1)
This week: Fri @ River Lakes

Marshall (2-1) (2-0)
This week: Tues @ Luverne, Thurs vs New Ulm, Sat @ Hutchinson

Minneapolis (1-2) (1-1)
This week: Tues @ Providence Academy, Thurs vs Orono, Sat vs Minnehaha Academy

South St Paul (0-1) (0-0)
This week: Tues vs North St Paul, Sat vs Simley

Minnesota River deserves some consideration ahead of East, at least at this point.

It is hard to rank teams this early, especially in class A.

Weather affected the Alex/West game which would have given some direction to class A.

Good job, and thanks for the rankings.

1. Cathedral
2. Hermantown
3. Mahtomedi
4. Alexandria
5. Greenway
6. East Grand Forks
7. Thief River Falls
8. Northfield
9. Orono
10. Hutchinson

Others: Virginia, Litchfield, Lourdes, Eveleth-Gilbert, North Branch
Thought Warroadwould have a better start as this group had a lot of success through the youth ranks. Greenway will most likely go 1-2 this week beating Denfeld but losing to Cathedral and East Grand Forks. There should be another Metro team but I can’t think of any. Breck? Could someone rank the top five Metro teams?

Ugh, it is an ugly year for Class A in the metro area. Your question somewhat depends on how you define the metro area, but I personally would not include places like Northfield and North Branch. That leaves something like:
1. Mahtomedi
2. Orono
3. Monticello
4. Chisago Lakes? (Borderline metro)
5. Breck
6. Mound-Westonka (if no Chisago)
