Class A Rankings 12-9-18

Post by HShockeywatcher » Sun Dec 09, 2018 10:38 am

With more games played, we have a better picture for a lot of teams, but there's still lots to be seen. Two of the Top 4 have played a combined 1 Class A opponent, while there are multiple out-state teams who have really good records, but haven't played many quality opponents.
We could see movement in the Top 5 this week, as well as a handful of teams who could jump into the Top 15 with any mistakes by those that are ranked.
If there are any more teams worth mentioning that I have missed, let me know.

1. [1] Cathedral (5-0) (5-0)
The Crusaders beat Greenway then took TRF to OT and won, both on the road. The OT game doesn't look good on paper, but they won. They have a good matchup with Alexandria this week, then there's 6 games and 3 weeks before they play host Hermantown and likely won't be challenged much in the meantime.
This week: Tues vs Alexandria, Sat vs South St Paul

2. [2] Hermantown (2-2) (0-0)
The Hawks beat Eden Prairie on the road then followed that up with a loss to BSM the next day. Two more AA games brings them a big rivalry game where they host the Hilltoppers this Thursday.
This week: Thurs vs Duluth Marshall, Sat @ New Prague

3. [3] Alexandria (4-0) (4-0)
The Cardinals are undefeated, they have allowed 2 GA this year, but they haven't played any tough opponents yet. Their next game is against Cathedral on the road. With 2 road games, 2 undefeated opponents, and both Class A opponents are Top 5 teams. Where will they be ranked next week?
This week: Tues @ Cathedral, Thurs vs St Cloud, Sat @ East Grand Forks

4. [4] Mahtomedi (3-1) (1-0)
The Zephyrs have two shutouts, a 1 goal loss to Hill-Murray, but have still only played 1 Class A team which won't be changing anytime soon. They do play Orono, Hermantown, Cathedral, and Breck in their last 6 games of the season, so really no big deal in the end. This week they host WI's best team from last year.
This week: Tues vs Hudson, Sat @ Hastings

5. [6] East Grand Forks (6-1) (5-1)
This is a big week for the Green Wave. They have one loss on the season, have beaten Greenway, while getting crushed by Cathedral, and they play the best opponent on their schedule this week. Winning would be great for them, while losing to Alexandria this week could keep them outside the Top 4 all season.
This week: Tues vs Crookston, Sat vs Alexandria

6. [7] Orono (3-2) (3-1)
The Spartans crushed Minneapolis then beat Monticello by 1. Their only MN loss is to EGF, so they'll stay outside the top 5 for a while and all they can do for now is win.
This week: Tues @ Chaska, Thurs vs Breck

7. [-] Duluth Denfeld (4-0) (4-0)
The Hunters are undefeated, which includes an OT win over Greenway, but they also opened with an OT win over Minnehaha Academy. They are tough to judge right now and their game against Virginia this week will be a big barometer for where they should be.
This week: Tues vs Virginia, Fri @ New Prague

8. [5] Greenway (2-3) (1-3)
The Raiders are tough to judge now. They have lost to two good teams in Cathedral and EGF, while they went to OT
This week: Fri @ Holy Family, Sat @ Blake

9. [8] Warroad (3-3) (3-1)
The Warriors went to OT with Sartell, beat Virginia by 4, then got shut out by a Rapids team that Virginia lost to by only 1. They are nestled right in where they will likely be for a while, although winning two road games this week could change that up.
This week: Tues @ Thief River Falls, Thurs @ East Grand Forks

10. [12] Sartell (3-1) (2-1)
The Sabres have lost to Warroad in OT, while allowing one goal in and winning the rest of their games. They have a couple more road games this week.
This week: Tues @ Hutchinson, Thurs @ Sauk Rapids-Rice

11. [9] Thief River Falls (3-3-1) (3-1)
The Prowlers lost two games this week and have a couple ugly AA losses, but they took Cathedral to OT last week. They have 3 home games this week; the class A games will be super important for section seeding and ranking here.
This week: Tues vs Bemidji, Thurs vs Warroad, Sat vs Minneapolis

12. [10] Mankato East (3-2) (2-0)
The Cougars picked up a 1 goal win over Northfield this week. They have now played two Class A teams, beaten them both, and don't play another until next week.
This week: Thurs vs Shakopee, Sat vs New Richmond

13. [14] Virginia (2-3) (2-2)
With 2 losses this week, there is no reason to move the Blue Devils from where they were seat last week. Their game against Denfeld this week will be a good challenge for both teams.
This week: Tues @ Denfeld, Sat @ Eveleth-Gilbert

14. [-] Chisago Lakes (6-0) (4-0)
The Tigers now have 1 less win that they had all last season. Their only notable win was by 2 goals over Monticello, so they're hard to judge at this point. Their goalie, leading scorer and half their skaters with 10+ points last year returned this year. Their leading scorer has more points through 6 games this year than he did all last season; this will be a fun team to follow as they are now in the driver's seat in section 5A.
This week: Wed @ Gentry Academy, Thurs @ Pine City Area, Sat @ St Michael-Albertville

15. [13] Northfield (1-1) (1-1)
The Raiders have only played 2 games this season and one of them is a 5-4 loss to Mankato East. They will be picking it up now as they play 6 games over the next two weeks.
This week: Tues vs Mankato West, Thurs vs Rochster Mayo, Sat @ New Ulm

Others to watch

Breck (2-2) (2-1)
This week: Thurs @ Orono, Sat @ SPA

Delano (1-4) (1-3)
This week: Tues vs Chanhassen, Sat vs Holy Family

Litchfield (1-1) (1-1)
This week: Tues @ Bloomington Kenneday, Sat vs Hutchinson

Marshall (5-1) (5-0)
This week: Tues vs Windom, Thurs vs Redwood Valley, Sat @ Waseca

Minneapolis (3-3) (3-2)
This week: Fri @ Crookston, Sat @ Thief River Falls

Minnesota River (5-1) (4-1)
Tues @ Albert Lea, Thurs @ Hutchinson, Sat vs Worthington

[11] Monticello (2-3-1) (2-2-1)
This week: Tues vs Sauk Rapids-Rice, Sat @ North Branch

Games between mentioned teams this week:
Alexandria @ Cathedral
Alexandria @ East Grand Forks
Breck @ Orono
Virginia @ Denfeld
Warroad @ Thief River Falls
Warroad @ East Grand Forks
Minneapolis @ Thief River Falls

The SCC - TRF game was a good game. SCC was flat the first period (road weary maybe) but heavily dominated play the other two periods.
Score could have easily been not as close, but they did a lot of "one more pass before shooting" that lead to the usual no shot at all, and a lot of their shots were easy saves for the TRF goalie.
They have nice team speed and energy, and definitely play as a team effort. Noticed the score sheet on the Hub is wrong; #4 and 9 were responsible for both TRF goals.

Monticello is taking their lumps in 5A and outshot but lost to your #6 0-1. 5A is pretty strong this year.

From just a couple weeks ago
North Branch 5
Minnesota River 1

5A high schools are NOW keeping their top talent from leaving because they know there is parity now in the section. Hats off to the MSHSL! 👍 Now don't mess it up next year!!!!!!

Don't rank Marshall. Wait and see what happens the rest of the season. I am not a fan of early season rankings anyway. :^o

Yes, you are correct. Okay, I lied. Go ahead and rank Marshall, somewhere between 31 and 40. =D>
