Schwan's Cup this year?

Post by HShockeywatcher » Sun Dec 09, 2018 11:07 am

Does anybody have any knowledge of what happened between last year and this year in the Schwan Cup?
4 teams who played in the Gold Division last year, and have for many years, are not playing in the Schwan Cup this year.
On top of that, the Gold Division is now a round robin instead of a bracket and only has 4 teams, while their other 3 divisions are still brackets.

Did something change with the tournament? Did teams back out too late to find replacements?

I wonder how long Schwan's Cup will be around in the future given that a South Korean company bought a majority stake in the company (80%).

Will the South Koreans decide that sponsoring a high school hockey tournament doesn't really increase food sales? :?:

The concessions at the NSC Super Rink are lousy. They can increase sales by upping the effort there. Fine if you just want a snack, drink, or popcorn. If you are there all day for a showcase it's hard to get a decent meal. No Coke either.
Be kind. Rewind.

4 teams leaving doesn't explain why the tournament would change format for the Gold Division and why they would sit on 28 teams instead of 32.

Hopefully it isn't a sign of the tournament falling apart.

You’ve now got great competition at both SLP and Dakota Trny

I think there might also be a holiday timing issue this year

Finally , U of M rinks are many times difficult for
traffic and parking I think they might be experimenting with Aldrich to see Schwan crowd size there

Wouldn’t surprise me someday if Aldrich starts hosting a North and East metro holiday Trny .
Whether that would be Schwans or not, who knows

The promotion/relegation system in the Gold division teally watered down the talent level of the tournament. In the early days they invited the top 8 teams in the state and then the 2 teams that lost both games were not invited back the following year and the other six were no matter what the prospects looked like for the following year. In the early years the 8 teams in the tournament were better than the 8 the made it to the State tourney. That plus expensive tickets, parking and concessions don’t help

Heard that part of the reason was the parents didn't like the JV and Varsity playing on different rinks at the same time. Also teams just wanted to play round robin instead of a tournament format. Bill Lechner would only stay in if the current format was used.
