Stellar goalie and some nice young players. About 25 coaches on their staff so they’re certainly devoted to building another private school hockey program in the southwest suburbs. For the most part they’ve been playing some of the worst Single A teams in the state, though they did keep it close with Marshall (see above about goalie). Section 2A is wide open after Orono so I wouldn’t be shocked if they win a game or two, but give them a couple more years assuming they can replace their senior netminder.

I should add: there is a historical connection between SW Christian in general and Minnetonka students, and that hasn’t changed with their recruiting efforts in hockey. Some of their players were Bantam A kids in Tonka youth program and several of their coaches have deep ties with the Skipper youth program. Something to keep an eye on.

No. 70 La Crescent-Hokah (20.3) 1-3-0 6-9-0 3.3 5.1 Won 4
No. 70 Winona/Cotter (20.3)

This should be an interesting section play-off.
Any one of the top 3 could be in state. To my knowledge MNRiver would be the first time, that's always fun.
MWest, Faribault, Albert Lea could be a spoiler team.

No one jumping out but have to think its Orono's to lose.
But possibly six teams to give it a shot.

Week 7 Rankings

Here we go, back from the holidays and heading into the home stretch of the regular season. The much anticipated clash between the top two teams lived up to the hype, and those two are basically in a tier of their own, followed by two more teams that are difficult to separate in EGF and Mahtomedi. There wasn’t a ton of movement in the rankings, as it was a fairly light week of action and most of the teams held serve.

1. Hermantown (8-3-0) (LW 1)
W 2-1 (OT) @ Cathedral
The Hawks escaped with a win at Cathedral Friday night, thanks to a Pierce goal with 32 seconds left in OT, and remain atop the rankings. Hermantown has a three-game week coming up, including a 7A game at Denfeld and a fascinating #1 vs. #1 matchup against Minnetonka.

2. St. Cloud Cathedral (12-1-0) (LW 2)
L 1-2 (OT) vs Hermantown
The Crusaders dropped their first game of the year, yet still managed to impress in the process. By all accounts the game was every bit as even as the score indicated, even with Warner still out of the lineup. The upcoming week brings trips to two ranked opponents in Sartell and Orono.

3. East Grand Forks (11-2-0) (LW 3)
W 2-0 vs GF Red River, L 2-5 vs GF Central
The Wave split against two of ND’s best, losing to #1 Central who has been dominant this season, including a 10-0 win over Orono. Hard to penalize them for that, and it’s always difficult to weigh games against non-MN teams. A difficult week ahead with 8AA opposition in Moorhead and Bemidji.

4. Mahtomedi (10-2-0) (LW 4)
W 6-0 @ Henry Sibley, L 1-4 vs STA
The Zephyrs split two conference games, which was probably expected given the opposition. I watched basically the entire STA game, and was mildly disappointed with Mahtomedi. They hung around for the first half of the game, but were often sloppy and undisciplined, and failed to generate many offensive threats. Thus, they stay behind EGF for now. A similar week ahead, with games against Tartan and HM.

5. Alexandria (10-4-0) (LW 5)
L 0-1 vs Sartell, W 3-2 vs Wayzata
A topsy-turvy week for Alex, losing a big 6A contest to Sartell on Thursday, then sneaking out a win against a ranked AA foe the next night. I’m not sure what to make of that, so they somewhat begrudgingly remain in place for now. An all-Cardinal matchup against Willmar is the only upcoming game on the platter.

6. Totino-Grace (9-4-0) (LW 7)
W 6-0 vs Holy Angels, L 3-5 vs University School, W 7-2 @ Spring Lake Park
The Eagles outscored their first two opponents in the Schwan’s Cup Bronze Division by a 13-0 count, then dropped the final to the #2 Wisconsin team. USM thoroughly outshot TG and controlled play, but the Eagles hung around much like they did against Hermantown. TG should rack up a few more wins against lesser NWSC foes Irondale and Coon Rapids.

7. Orono (7-4-0) [LW 8]
W 4-2 vs Virginia, W 5-4 (OT) vs Greenway
Two close but important wins for the Spartans, who needed two late goals to pull away from Virginia, then squeaked by Greenway in a back and forth overtime affair. They climb up another spot as a result. Orono now has two winnable games coming up before a visit from Cathedral on Saturday.

8. Thief River Falls (8-4-2) (LW 6)
W 10-1 @ Lake of the Woods
It is illogical to drop the Prowlers after a blowout victory, but this is more of a belated market correction for me probably overrating them recently, along with other teams playing good hockey. TRF has another light week with only Park Rapids on tap, but the schedule starts to become hairier after that.

9. Warroad (8-5-0) (LW 10)
W 5-0 vs Fergus Falls, W 7-1 vs Detroit Lakes
The Warriors’ winning ways continue as they walloped the Otters Friday night, then handed Detroit Lakes their first loss of the season in nasty fashion. The rivalry game against a strong Roseau squad looms on Thursday.

10. Sartell-St. Stephen (9-2-0) (LW 12)
W 1-0 @ Alexandria
After a poor showing over the holidays, the Sabres turn around and trip up Alex in a tight one. Only a slight bump for now, as other teams ahead of them took care of business, and I remain a bit skeptical. A brutal week is on the horizon, with Cathedral and Brainerd coming to Bernick’s.

11. Greenway (5-10-0) (LW 11)
W 7-0 vs Hibbing, L 4-5 (OT) @ Chaska, L 4-5 (OT) @ Orono
What doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger? Should a 5-10 team remain ranked this high? After crushing Hibbing, the Raiders experienced two heartbreaking overtime losses by identical scores. The Chaska loss was particularly painful, as Greenway was up 4-3 before the Hawks were credited with what appeared to be a phantom goal with 40 seconds left. The question now is whether they can regroup and make a run toward the end of the season.

12. Monticello (9-4-1) (LW 9)
0-7 @ Buffalo
I generally try not to overreact to AA losses, but Monti was never in the game against an average Buffalo squad, bringing their winning streak to a screeching halt. Another single game week for the Moose, with North Branch visiting for a critical sectional contest.

13. North Branch (10-2-1) (LW 13)
W 5-3 @ Chisago
The Vikings needed a late flurry to win their only game of the week, solidifying their spot as the current #2 team in 5A. They have two games which should be easy wins sandwiched around a Thursday trip to Monticello, with a chance to avenge their earlier loss to the Moose.

14. Marshall (12-2-0) (LW 14)
W 5-1 vs Simley, W 4-3 vs SWC/Richfield, L 1-4 vs Minn River
Marshall won their Schwan’s Cup division, then stubbed their toe against a flagging Minnesota River on Saturday. The Tigers get a pass for now and remain in the rankings, but face a road trip to a feisty New Ulm team Thursday.

15. Minnesota River(11-3-0) (LW NR)
W 7-4 @ Worthington, W 4-1 @ Marshall
Finding a team for the final slot was difficult, so why not the group that just defeated Marshall? The Bulldogs hit a rough patch before an extended holiday break, but seem to have returned to their early season form. Three winnable games this week before a rematch with New Ulm.

Out: Detroit Lakes (LW 15)

Next Five Up (alphabetical order):

Detroit Lakes (9-1-1)
W 4-2 @ Crookston, L 1-7 @ Warroad

Duluth Denfeld (8-3-1)
W 3-1 @ Proctor, W 5-1 vs Lake of the Woods

Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato (8-3-1)
W 6-2 vs Little Falls, W 3-1 @ Willmar

Northfield (8-4-0)
W 3-0 @ Rochester JM, W 5-4 (OT) @ Mankato West

Princeton (10-3-0)
W 6-2 vs Henry Sibley, W 5-2 vs Chisago, W 7-5 vs Sauk Rapids

A few notes:
- Everything after Warroad is somewhat of a mess, and I am open to arguments that certain teams are too high or low.
- Mankato East and Mound Westonka exit the rankings, while Northfield returns after four straight wins. New Ulm was probably my last team out.
- I feel like I have a southern bias at the tail end of the rankings, but the metro area is just desolate after the top handful of teams.

Continuing my look at sections
Section 3 - QRF
No. 7 Marshall (62.8) 7-0-0 12-2-0 5.1 1.9 Lost 1
No. 19 Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato (49.3) 4-0-0 8-3-1 3.8 2.2 Won 2
No. 32 New Ulm (36.8) 4-2-0 8-5-1 4.0 2.0 Won 2
No. 51 Hutchinson (29.6) 1-2-0 3-9-0 2.5 5.0 Won 1
No. 52 Windom Area (29.2) 2-2-1 4-4-1 3.8 3.8 Won 2
No. 56 Luverne (27.7) 3-2-0 4-8-0 3.6 4.7 Lost 5
No. 65 Redwood Valley (23.2) 2-4-0 4-8-0 3.4 5.8 Won 3
No. 65 Willmar (23.2) 1-2-1 2-7-2 1.9 3.1 Lost 1
No. 80 Worthington (12.8) 1-6-0 1-11-0 2.5 5.9 Lost 3
No. 81 Fairmont (9.3) 0-5-0 0-11-0

I had thought it was Marshall and was beginning to thin they may do something at the X (and of course this could still happen, but losing to MNRiver by 3 was unexpected (by me).

So the semis could be very, very good.
The top 4 all have shown something this year to give them hope for a trip to the X - I still have Marshall, but????

Looks like a two team race (with a dark horse in Northfield) - but a great final.

Its Monti or North, but Princeton could throw a wrench into it and Chisago, Becker or PIne City could mess it up.
I am taking Monti.

QRF is particularly weird for 2A, given the results of some of the sectional games. Delano being so low seems like an anomaly, as they have blowout wins over Kennedy and now Mound, and pose more of a threat than several of the teams above them. Having seen all of the teams play except Kennedy, I would be pretty surprised if Orono doesn’t emerge from this section.

I am putting everything on the line and saying Morris and Breckenridge will NOT make the QF's. I hope those players are having fun and have a good finish.
This belongs to Cathedral, but Alex is capable and as we now know Sartell can beat Alex. And on any given night Little Falls, or another middle of the roader could spoil things.
Short story this would be a good section to take in the QF, SF and final.

No. 79 Hibbing/Chisholm (13.2) 0-3-0 0-13-0

I do not believe I have after seen a list of iron range teams (maybe except baseball) where Hibbing was listed below Ely (nothing against Ely).
Perhaps, just perhaps, Hibbing will get there first win in the paly-in game.

Hermantown, if Greenway gets it together then maybe a challenger.
But what is happening to Virginia, is it just a tough schedule, have they had injuries????
If someone knows please let us know.

Looks like a two team race (with a dark horse in Northfield) - but a great final.
Mahtomedi is 10-2 not 11-1.

Section 8
No. 5 East Grand Forks (71.9) 3-0-0 11-2-0 4.6 1.8 Lost 1
No. 11 Thief River Falls (54.6) 3-0-0 8-4-2 2.9 1.8 Won 1
No. 16 Detroit Lakes (51.4) 2-1-0 9-1-1 4.4 2.1 Lost 1
No. 22 Warroad (45.3) 2-2-0 8-5-0 3.4 2.5 Won 5
No. 27 Kittson Central (39.5) 3-0-0 7-2-0 4.3 2.3 Won 3
No. 61 Lake of the Woods (25.5) 2-3-0 5-8-0 2.9 4.6 Won 1
No. 62 Red Lake Falls (25.4) 1-2-0 3-4-0 4.9 5.1 Lost 1
No. 72 Crookston (19.0) 1-4-0 2-10-1 2.5 4.6 Lost 3
No. 73 Bagley/Fosston (18.7) 2-2-0 3-7-0 3.1 5.0 Lost 4
No. 77 Park Rapids Area (16.5) 1-6-0 2-11-0

The top 3 (switch Detroit Lakes with Warroad in the QRF). Nothing ever changes. This century it has only been those 3 teams.
EGF looks pretty tough, Warroad and TRF in the semis, and it will be a good final but I can't see it not being EGF (especially with semis and finals in EGF).

"Mahtomedi is 10-2 not 11-1."

Copied from MN scores net QRF list.
I will let them know.

I see they have the STA game reversed.

It's not that complicated.
Sorry, had some issues this morning that delayed me in tying up the loose ends on my rankings. You are aware of my medical situation, and things cropped up around that.
Take car and I enjoy your input, not only here but on other threads.
Thanks, things are better now and hopefully under control. I should have read through the thread more before posting, since I ended up inserting my rankings right in the middle of your section breakdowns.

Not a problem, just fooling around while waiting for inspiration (direction) on which way to go in another novel.
(I got it figured out thanks to some mindless hockey stuff - don't tell anyone I am mindless when thinking about hockey stuff)
