Class A Rankings 1-6-18

Post by HShockeywatcher » Sun Jan 06, 2019 10:29 am

The top 4 stayed the same, but all the other spots moved around. Both Hermantown and Mahtomedi have beaten every Class A opponent they've had and they have 5 one goal losses to AA opponents between them. Luckily, Mahtomedi still has games against 4 of the top 7 before the season is out.

1. [1] Hermantown (8-3) (2-0)
The Hawks played their second Class A opponent, beating Cathedral in OT. They have been in every game this season; can they give the Skippers their first loss?
This week: Tues @ Grand Rapids, Thurs @ Denfeld, Sat vs Minnetonka

2. [2] Cathedral (12-1) (12-1)
The first time the Crusaders were behind in their game hosting Hermantown was when they allowed the goal in OT. Two road games this week, one a section game.
This week: Thurs @ Sartell, Sat @ Orono

3. [3] Mahtomedi (10-2) (7-0)
The Zephyrs played a top team and lost by 1 goal. They get a rematch at Aldrich this week. Their next Class A game isn't for 2 weeks.
This week: Thurs vs Tartan, Sat @ Hill-Murray

4. [4] East Grand Forks (11-2) (8-1)
The Green Wave have a good road game then two home games this week. Can they avoid losing 2 in a row?
This week: Tues @ Moorhead, Thurs vs Bemidji, Sat vs Detroit Lakes

5. [7] Orono (7-4) (7-1)
The Spartans picked up an OT win in Greenway. This week they host Cathedral.
This week: Tues @ New Prague, Fri @ Hutchinson, Sat vs Cathedral

6. [6] Thief River Falls (8-4-2) (7-1-1)
The Prowlers crushed Lake of the Woods. Still only Class A loss is to Cathedral and they only have 8A opponents remaining.
This week: Tues vs Park Rapids

7. [11] Totino-Grace (9-4) (1-2)
The Eagles' season is coming together as they are picking up more wins. On paper it doesn't seem like they'll be challenged over the next 2 weeks before they go to Mahtomedi.
This week: Thurs @ Irondale, Sat vs Coon Rapids

8. [12] Monticello (9-4-1) (7-2-1)
The Magic are in an interesting spot after having a good holiday tournament, winning 7 in a row, then getting crushed by Buffalo. Their only Class A losses are to Chisago Lakes and Orono with a couple quality wins. Until their last three games there isn't a lot of Class A competition.
This week: Thurs vs North Branch

9. [14] Sartell (9-2) (6-2)
The Sabres two losses are early to Warroard and recently to Monticello, but this week they shut out Alexandria on the road. They control their own destiny for the top seed in the section; can they keep it rolling as they host Cathedral this week?
This week: Tues @ Fergus Falls, Thurs vs Cathedral, Fri vs Brainerd

10. [15] Duluth Denfeld (8-3-1) (6-1-1)
The Hunters mostly have an awkward schedule. This is a big jump, but there isn't really a lot of reason to keep them belong the teams under them, especially having beat Greenway. This week they'll be playing two big games against local competition; can they compete in either?
This week: Mon vs Duluth East, Thurs vs Hermantown

11. [9] Greenway (5-10) (3-6)
The Raiders had 2 OT road losses to good teams last week. Getting to .500 seems to still be likely for this squad.
This week: Tues @ North Shore, Fri @ Roseau

12. [5] Alexandria (10-4) (7-4)
The Cardinals lost to Sartell then beat Wayzata the next day. On paper, they will only be challenged twice more this season and neither game is until February.
This week: Thurs vs SWillmar

13. [10] Warroad (8-5) (6-3)
The Warriors gave Detroit Lakes their first loss to win their 5th in a row. Can they beat Roseau to make it 6 in a row?
This week: Thurs vs Roseau, Sat @ Crookston

14. [-] Mankato East (6-6-1) (4-4)
This week: Tues @ Mankato West, Thurs vs Winona, Sat @ Red Wing

15. [-] North Branch (10-2-1) (9-1-1)
The Vikings win 5 in a row to pick up their 10th win of the season. Can they win the second one against Monticello who is their only Class A loss this season?
This week: Tues vs Legacy Christian, Thurs @ Monticello, Sat vs Cambridge-Isanti

Others to watch:

[9] Detroit Lakes (10-1) (9-1)
This week: Tues vs Wadena-Deer Creek, Sat @ East Grand Forks

Litchfield (8-3-1) (7-3-1)
This week: Mon @ Holy Family, Tues vs Holy Family, Thurs vs Prairie Center, Sat @ Delano

[13] Marshall (12-2) (12-1)
This week: Tues @ Worthington, Thurs @ New Ulm

Northfield (8-4) (6-2)
This week: Tues vs Simley, Thurs @ Austin

Princeton (10-3) (10-3)
This week: Tues vs Kennedy, Thurs @ Chisago Lakes, Sat vs Rogers

Waconia (7-3-2) (6-2-2)
This week: Tues @ Mound Westonka, Thurs @ Holy Family

I saw Alex at 12 and laughed. At worst, a top 8 team.

Care to elaborate? They went to OT with Cathedral and beat Wayzata recently, but lost and have recent losses to Greenway and Sartell. Outside of Wayzata, Virginia is the only "quality" win they have on their schedule. They play Sartell again, but if the season ended now they'd be the 3 seed in their own section.

To bring them up, who would you bring down below them?

Thief River Falls, Warroad, Monticello, Denfeld and Orono.. a case can be built. I think Brainerd would qualify as a quality win. For the most part this is the same team that made the great run last year. They are top 8 easy.
